Hi folks

Following on from Hellz recent threads about classic slipjoints, I decided to get a Case yellow medium stockman. I had already bought a Schrade two blade Old Timer from Basemetal, and have been very pleased with it.

I ordered, as usual, from www.newgraham.com and the knife arrived today, which I think is a record four days!

You can see a picture of the knife here (www.newgraham.com/yellow.htm) eighth one down.

So, first impressions. The scales are much lighter than the picture suggests, lighter even than the first two knives in the list. The colour is somewhere between ivory and pale yellow, which I think I actually like more than the vibrant sunflower yellow of the picture, but that looked good enough for me to order, so no worries there.

The fit and finish is good, the backsprings fitting well against the brass liners, but it is not a seamless fit. The pins are brass and very nicely flush to the scales. The bolsters look like nickel silver, but I think must be steel.

The three blades are all, according the blurb on the attractive box;

'....chrome vanadium' steel........a special formula of alloyed steel....the original 'Case' steel....known for edge holding ability and easy sharpening.'

As you can see from the picture there is a large clip-point blade, a lambsfoot and a spey. All are reasonably sharp, cutting paper out of the box, but not hair. A few swipes on a Gerber mini-sharpener and all three are nice and shaving sharp.

Am I pleased? Yes, very. This will go into EDC rotation. I will definately be looking further into classic American slipjoints as well. I like the ones by Cold Steel very much, but over on BCUK Hoodoo 'hinted' that Camillus might just possibly be involved in the manufacture and their own ones are cheaper, so I'll be having a look at them too. However next on my list is a beautiful two blade spear and pen blade Sheffield slipjoint with lovely filework that I am indebted to Andy for showing me.

I'm not quite finished though. On taking the knife out of the box I remembered something I had bought a while back on ebay for about three quid, and stuffed in rainjacket pocket meaning to have a look at work and consequently completely forgotten about.

Well, I found it! I can't find a picture to hand but if you look on the www.newgraham.com/yellow.htm list and look at the third knife down, the Baby Butterbean, you will see what I bought. Except mine has imitation jade scales in a mottled pale green, a bit like a pretty frog. The knife is by Roughrider and is marked 'China' but side by side, other than the badge, I would challenge anyone to separate it from the Case model in terms of quality. So watch out for Roughrider slipjoints on ebay. I know I will as I reckon they might just be one and the same thing as Case.

;)

So this morning I have two new slipjoints to play with, not just one, and the yellow and green go rather fetchingly together. I'm a happy Danzo.

:) :D

Looks nice Danzo, I've been thinking about a slipjoint other than a SAK as well so I was interested to see that so many others are buying them at the moment. Mind you, I shudder to think about what will appear if you do a search on Ebay for Roughrider :O :D

Yes, some judicious narrowing of the search might be required!

:O

Thes Case knives are really rather good, and at US$33.00 delivered to your door, which is about eighteen of our English pounds, they are a good way to have some fun collecting without having to spend the mortgage on some ubersteel tactical monsterknife. Much as I love them........

And you STILL get the newgraham plasters in their fridgemagnet box!

Cheers Danzo, good review. Maybe a little evolution is in order for me too. The Case Wharncliffes look nice.

If mine arrived this morning then I guess Hellz should be along soon with his two blade Trapper.

They are really pleasing to hold and use and they actually seem more like 'collectables' than the normal black handled FRN/G10/Micarta ubersteel beasties we often discuss.

It's a bit like discovering folk music after a relentless diet of heavy metal!

Well that's the important bit :D

My Orange mid Stockman is yet to arive but it's looking like a usefull EDC. Will it eclipse my venerable SAK's? Can I live without a corkscrew and a can opener in my pocket?

Possibly but I'm going to need a pry baby or similar as any prying functionality goes with the SAK.

Er.......Anarcus, no knife ever replaces an SAK, they are all in addition.

:D

My EDC rotation includes a torch and a SAK.

No parcels for Hellz today :(

Shouldn't be long now. I've got some other Slipjoint bits in the pipeline too, including a Case Amber Bone Canoe in Chrome Vanadium.

I've got my eye on a Case 'Shadow Bone' Butterbean (bolsterless) too... and one of those Senators that Andy showed in the Passaraound thread... and...

Oh for goodness sake...

There are some nice knives by Queen Cutlery (www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/queen/) at www.knifecenter.com, the cocobolo and D2 toolsteel in particular, although I think they may be too big for legal EDC. Sadly not on the list at newgraham though. NGK have got the Boker line of slipjoints which also look good, although the pictures are much better at www.knifecenter.com

I have a Queen Serpentine Jack, that I removed the plastic "bone" scales, and replaced with premium Pink Ivory scales. What makes it interesting, is that it is a model from 1972, the 50th Aniversary knife...AND I "converted" the pen blade into a Warncliffe profile.

Yes, but the advantage of the newer knives is that you can get them with liner locks.

Uh...wait a sec...hmmmmm. :)

Indeed a beauty Hoodoo, and the lock looks interesting, but the advantage with slipjoints is we are allowed to carry them!

Do you have any experience of these Rough Rider knives I referred to Hoodoo? My model is a Canoe knife but it looks eggsackerly like the Case Baby Butterbean, except for a vertical slash in each bolster.

I really can't tell any difference in quality to the Case I just bought, and would have been pleased to spend the same on it, yet the Rough Rider knives sell for about five bucks on US sites and mine was only three quid here from an ebay dealer, which is about the same as the US price.

That makes sense. I can see how that liner lock on that little OT could be very dangerous if it fell into public hands. :) ;)

Hmmm...I figured out the size of the strange coin by the knife alongside it... :D

Which OT did you get, Danz?

It's a classic three blade stockman. I prefer the more flowing trapper blade than the rather abrupt classic stockman, but at less than a tenner for a Schrade I'm not complaining!

What a lot of folks don't realize about Old Timers is that if you take care of them, give 'em plenty of teflon lubricate, and gently fondle them once in awhile, they will grow. Heck, they will even sprout extra blades when they get bigger and mature. The top two knives started out as little shavers like the bottom one. :)

What if you put them in a plastic pyramid? :D
Bigger, younger, sharper? :D
