This is a test!!
Want to try and guage interest in a possible meet up with people near to sw London post below if interested was thinking of beer and curry in surbiton , Kingston, Wimbledon , that sort of way. We shall see ready , set , go!!!
When in London I am at the Elephant - if I am in the country I wouldn't mind a curry at all:D

Both CHUI and myself live around that way (opposite sides of Richmond Park) and have talked about a get together previously. When were you thinking? As June and July are pretty hectic for me.
Not forgetting JackJack's Hammerin.

Well any time really , no hurry, as I said I was guaging interest so glad there was some . I will know my shifts on Monday so I'll be able to put some dates out there and work it out from there. By the way what happens at these hammerins ? I feel a little ignorant !

If going for a curry in South London, then I hear Tooting is quite recommended for it's selection of curry houses!!
And yes, I'd be up for it if it's around the eastern end of South West London as I am Surrey/Kent border.
and as long as the date doesn't clash
Bisley clashes with my Birthday and we are hoping for good weather and hoping to be setting up a spit roast for a whole pig that weekened

well it appears there is good interest so far and still only a half a days worth of posts. Im back to work on Monday, ill get my shifts and then suggest some dates, sounds like fun keep the interest inbound!!
Topheronetwoo - love to! I'd suggested a braai at my place to Roscopip, Veedubber and Parbajtor (cos of our SA connection), but meeting up for a beer / curry is a great idea for a number of us.
Had you thought of it possibly being a meet to show/discuss sharps too, in which case we'd need to ask landlord/manager before we cause a visit of the plod, possibly :C
Am up for any of your suggestions.......
topheronetwoo
21-05-10, 11:04 AM
well , Its a given that sharps will be discussed and im pretty sure that would be fine with most places. With regards to showing it would obviously have to be somewhere with a private room. Off the top of my head I cant think of any pubs near me that I can imagine would be ok with it but let me have a think. Ill suggest prospective dates as soon as I can after monday and ill give the meet idea some thought , open to suggestions, however the problem of transporting sharps to the venue still stands. I will think on , keep the suggestions inbound!!

Im doing a carboot sale in BURPHAM on Sunday, just so you know there has been copious amounts of old files some very wide ones that i can see making a nice blade, a few old pen knives and one guy selling kriss blades and kukris also old axe heads over the last two weeks , plus ill be selling my old tat. I will however be selling some paracord products ive made, including bracelets with stainless steel shackles and a few key rings.

Would Putney / Barnes area suit d'ya think? There are some good pubs along that bit of the river, some with separate rooms.

Hi Guys.
Great idea all this. As for showing off our blades I might have a suggestion too. Providing the weather is alright on 26th of June I could actually organise something on my terrace (it's quite large) why not a bbq (need to buy one anyway).
I live near Epsom (Surrey). Let me know if this would work for some of you. If not, beer and curry somewhere else would be great too :D
MushiSushi
22-05-10, 10:33 AM
Epsom is doable for me
and if you need a BBQ I could bring my half drum one :)
Monsieur
22-05-10, 10:47 AM
Great, well let's see if that works for most of us date wise this is the only time I can propose, wifey and son away to the inlaws :P
Evening of beer, curry, knives SW London all good - Epsom BBQ a little more tricky as only one car and wife and child might not find it as interesting as I would

Think the wife is working this weekend and I've got 2 choices, I can drive and that means I would have to leave at about 9:30pm to pick her up = limits on beer
I can come by train and get my wife to pick me up at 10pm on her way home from leatherhead = I can get pissed
slight problem with plan B though, she'll probably get lost, her sense of direction is appalling; last time I tried to get her to pick me up in Kingston, she ended up in Portsmouth :O

Monsieur
11-06-10, 09:25 AM
Right!!
I will PM everyone the postcode and house number over the weekend if this is alright with you guys.
Nearest train Stations are Tattenham Corner, Epsom, Epsom Downs, Tadworth and Sutton. All of these are on direct trains from either Waterloo or Victoria, all go through Clapham Junction. If you're coming from London bridge Sutton is your best option. Driving is quite easy and if you're coming from the M25 this is exit 9 (I think) for Reigate.
Logistics
We need a bbq I believe that MushiSushi volounteered for that.
We will need food (good news is there is a 24/7 ASDA a few hundred yards away)
We might need some bevvy as well. I'll have the pernod but beer and stuff will have to be added
Can you think of anything else?
Hotels, Steve there is a Premier Inn in Burgh Heath on Brighton Road, it's very close but will that be cheap enough I don't know, never been to one :D

Great news ...
I reckon that if a couple of guys want to arrive between 10.30 ad 11.30 to help me out putting everything in place that'd be great. After that when ever you want really, would be great to get the barbecue going (meaning meat already cooked!) for 1pm. I noticed there was a veggie on the list, being French I don't know what this means? Chicken and fish okay? :D Only joking, but I will need some requirements on that so I can may be purchase a few eatable things.
Do you guys prefer to give a contribution or each bring a little bit, food and drinks? Either way is cool by me but if it's the first one don't forget to bring some cash around for those who will make the advance.
Cheers

Hi,
I was planning to bring booze, homemade hamburgers and a load of gaspacho soup. The gaspacho should work for veggies as well.
At the moment I'm planning to come by train but transport permitting I'll try to get there some time between 10:30 and 11:30 so I can help out.
Is there anything else you need us to bring?
Cheers,
Huon

Booze and food sounds nice. Obviously if you want to bring a few knives for show you can but since you're traveling by train that might prove difficult. Your call for that ;)
I don't have many chairs but I guess we can all stand for a while :D
Once I will have emailed you guys the exact address (over the weekend) we will be able to see who I can pick up when. For those driving parking is not an issue here and it's free!!

Hi All,
Many thanks to Chris for dreaming this up, Nico for hosting it and Simon for providing the BBQ. For me it was a surreal but very rewarding experience to physically meet people I know from BB.
There were loads of knives there that I had read about but never had a chance to play with. It was nice to plug so many gaps in my knowledge.
I'm glad the Mad Dog ceramic caused an impresssion. The bottle cutting is fairly pointless but always fun to do.
I tend to be controlled by my stomach and I have to say the food was varied and good too. Parbajtor's (sorry, I didn't get your real name) goat, Jimi W's tuna and ShortAndCuddlyAm's rat were all superb.
I've also managed to come away with a couple of pieces of 'man knitting'. Thanks again Dave and Chris for the gifts.
See you all next time!

Yep, many more thanks to Monsiuer Nico, and indeed all of you for the serious food and table full of shiny things - in fact more shiny things than I've ever seen in one place - it truly was a table of wonders... in fact the only thing missing from that table was one of those giant Cinzano umbrellas, I got a bit burnt too. We should def do it again soon !! Maybe we could Start brainstorming the next location , I quite like the idea of a tarp. This in turn has acted as a catalyst , what about this for an idea?
We find an outdoor area and have a south London day camp meet up , those of you who have some bushcraft skills can show those of us that don't we can tarp, make fires outdoor cooking , drinking , could put some of our tools to real use this way so no nerves about reasonable excuses for carrying them ?? Your thoughts guys ?

Hmmm. Nice idea. The problem would be finding a venue that allows fires. If we went for a meetup e.g. on the downs or on wimbledon common, there's the parks police who would take a dislike to pitching of tarps as you're not allowed to camp, and there's definately "no fires".
A possible option would be a SW London members overnight campout on a camp site that allows fires (I know there's a couple but I need to find my sites book to check where they are), but then you have the problem of getting everyone and their kit there... (I suppose we could hire a mini bus or something?) But then, that starts getting a logistical nightmare - campsite hire, sharing the cost of the van and fuel etc etc.
We have a reasonably large garden.... although it needs clearing of all the cut down scrub that we cleared over the last couple of weekends (we let it get really overgrown over a couple of years). Oh and people would have to avoid tripping over or sitting on spiky roots still protruding from the ground! So at the moment, it's not the most hospitable of plots!

I know that my sister in laws fiancé s family have a farm in godalming which has an area that scouts camp, I'll look into this as a poss idea. I'm sure I can sell the idea to them !!

That sounds like a cracking idea!
I'm sure people would be willing to pitch in a small sum per person for renting the site if that would convince them?
If it's used as a scout camp then it probably has a toilet block (or basic faclities) which would be good :)
Keep us updated mate! I'd definately be up for an overnight campout!
topheronetwoo
28-06-10, 10:53 PM
The overnight thing sound like a good solution , that way everyone can have a beer , I would be able to take two people I reckon with basic kit. I'm sure the logistics can be figured out and I'm sure it would be well worth the effort. A site that allows fires sounds ideal!I'll chase my lead up as I would imagine they allow fires due to accomadating scouts etc.

As a possible alternative, there's this campsite in Farnham (not been there yet)
http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=4488 (details with reviews)
http://www.mellowfarmadventure.co.uk/ (official site)
£4 per person per night for "Organisation Camping" with campfires allowed on 10 pitches. Unfortunatelt fully booked at present until August.
Whichever site on an overnighter, I'd be willing to hire a minibus if needed as long as people travelling in the B-B-Bus contribute equally to hire costs and fuel. For example, a 12 seater ford transit minibus for 2 days is £116 hire with £10 surcharge on all multiseaters booked just for a single day at the weekend. There is a £5 per day surcharge on multi-seaters during June, July and August according to the hire people I have used in the past.
topheronetwoo
28-06-10, 11:02 PM
Oh now that does look good !! The review even mentions a river which could mean some night fishing ?? Maybe ? Think this place may out do my suggestion! Let's see if anyone comes up with any other suggestions other wise we might be suggesting perspective dates very soon !! :) in September obviously !

No fishing listed on their site mate.
You have to book that place with a deposit, and their camping fields are without much in the way of trees - which makes pitching a tarp between trees a no-no

I'd be happy to contribute to the cost of a minibus hire. Barring bad luck and acts of god I can probably be fairly flexible around most weekends with the exception of those around the last half of July and the first half of August.
If we do camp I have a 4.5m by 4.5m Tatonka that makes a good basecamp tarp. I have a few other bits and pieces that may be of use as well. Once we have a venue and date in mind we can all compare notes and do what is needed to fill in equipment gaps.
Cheers

Our big tent is a 6 berther (officially) but if we were to only put up the one bedroom inner (for Am and Me) and folks didn't mind getting cosy, there's probably enough floor space to fit in 10 people based on standard expedition "cram as many people in as small a tent as you can for warmth" practice.
That said, for just an overnighter, the tent is massively overkill, so we'd be "slumming it" under a 3m x 3m tarp or using a pair of one-man tents.
Need to sort out a suitable groundsheet for under the tarp still through.

I'd probably go the other way and bring along the larger lavvu. It goes up quickly and I could have a play with the stove inside if it gets cold. I like tarps when I'm on my own but I'm not a social sleeper (except in a very limited sense).

Didn't you know the second book in the LOTR trilogy was originally called "The Tolworth Tower" but the printers had run out of that size typeface, so they shortened it.
BTW. Do lady dwarves have lady beards or are they all Brazilian these days?

Hmm, not too sure about that......but I did hear of a lady dwarf who, most concerned about her aging looks, had so many facelifts, she now has to shave
I think this thread stinks of heightism!
You'll have to speak up. I can't hear you from down there.

I didn't know that you'd met my ex.
when did sw London become the middle earth?
Nope - New Zealand is still the real thing. SW London is a Middle Earth theme park.

Well need to pick one where the boss is away, she works weekends every fortnight. so take the 21st and add 2 weeks, and those are the weekends i can hold at mine (I could, in reason hold it when she is home, I'm not that hen pecked :P but it would preclude us getting molested by female interference ;) )

Very kind, thank you.
I'm afraid I have two weekends away planned in early September - the first weekend I could do would be 18/19th.
Sorry - if that's leaving it too late, I'll have to forego again :sad47:
I can do 28th Aug., but believe that conflicts with others and school hols etc.

Sept dates I can do at mine ...
4th or 5th
18th or 19th
I've got a small garden with a large covered area (or at least it should be by Sept) and I might even fire up a forge along with the BBQ, but we are running out of sunshine by the end of Sept, usually.

I'm Really sorry for taking so long guys , the people who I needed to speak to regarding this got very precious all of a sudden , they wanted to know who you all were , what we would all be doing , now this may not seem that bad but I had told them we would bf camping - considering I'm about to become family I am a tad pissed off that they wanted to cross examine me . I'm sorry , no where else would do that , the only question should be " are you going to have a fire". Sorry I've left it so long but I've Bern thinking about it alot , finally ( sorry) decided they have actually offended me a bit ! So not going to use them .
Monsieur

Right so as far as I can see were on for a pub meet, possibly Sat 4th Dec.
Otherwise were all round to Simon's to help finish his roof...:D
Whereabouts any preferences, Kingston, Richmond, Putney or any other suggestions.
Anyone heard from Huon , he don't seem to have been around much lately, I hope all's well.

Hi all
I guess the answer to the above is "no"!
As a new(ish) poster I haven't been involved previously, but as you can see from the box to the left I'm in the catchment area - New Malden to be precise.
Anyway, I would be interested if anything is going on in the local area.
Cheers all,

OK save me reading all 16 pages, what was the plan?
Meet up before Christmas, talk about the mods n sharps for 5 mins..........then get thoroughly blathered..........;)
- just a good ol' chinwag in a pub (supposing someone susses out that we're ok to meet 'with knives' with the landlord). It's not the time or weather to do a sun-scorching bbq, so a KF pub seems the only option.
TallNHairyDave
15-12-10, 06:37 PM
I reckon the best option for a pub meetup would be to find one where we can hire a room so there's no risk of either joe public wandering in and taking a liking to something or wandering in, getting scared and calling the polis!
Unfortunately I don't go to the pub very often so I can't think of any that would fit the bill...
Monsieur
