Swedish knife Law (Statute 1988:254, prohibation regarding knives and other dangerous items)
1§ Knives, other stabb and cutting weapons and other items intended to be used as a weapon causing harm and/or death is prohibited to posses in a public place, and/or school and collage, and/or in a vehicle in a public place.
An offence under 1§ is exempt if the item is part of equipment for certian service or assignment or if the possesion of the item, with consideration of the items type, personal need and/or other circomstances is regarded as justified.
stab-weapon and/or knives that is constructed so that the blade quickly can be flicked or slid out of its handle (Stiletto or gravity knives) is not to be possesed by persons under the age of 21 (Law 2000:148 )
2§knucle duster, ninja stars, or other such items that are designed to be used as an offensive weapon, as well as Stiletto and gravity knives, are prohibited to be handed to persons under the age of 21 or privatly kept (law 1990:413 )
3§ (regarding firearms and similiar weapons, see (law 1996:69 ))
4§ A person guilty of an offence (intentional or unintentional under 1 or 2§ shall be liable to a fine or inprisonment not exeeding six months. If the offence is to be regarded as grave a pesron shall be liable to a prison sentence not exeeding 12 months (law 2000:148 ).
5§ knives or other items in possesion in violation under 1§ and/or handed over to or kept in violation against 2§ shall be destroyed, unless it is regarded as unreasonable (Law 1990:413 )
Notes:
Basically, Swedish knife law Ban any type of knife in a public place, with the exception
of using it for work, military personal and so on.
on the other hand the law was created to be used with common sense by law enforcement.
so in reality you can carry ANY type of knife in a public place lawfully if you only have law full intentions carrying the knife.
the Law state that it is an offence to carry a knife that is intended to be used as an offensive weapon.
so if you are discrete and acting responsibly you should be fine using your knife cutting fruit or what ever, even if it is a fixed blade knife. however, might be a recommended using what we know as an EDC.
A final note, in Sweden the country side and forest is not legally regarded as a public place so carry what you want, if you as a back packer were to travel through a town or city it would be advised to tuck your knife away in your bag while in the area. and you should have no problem with the police. however, if you were to act like a twit and draw the attention of the law and found with a knife on your person, it is likely you'll be nicked for that offence rather than any other offence you might be responsible for.
It is a very hot sunny Sunday today, I've been out in the garden with wife and little trolls consuming vodka and orange so some words in the translation of the Swedish knife law might be inappropriate so perhaps someone with better choice of words who understand the gist of the law might want to edit or add suggestions.
I shall e-mail the Swedish police authority to clarify certain points to me, such as
