I've had a search here but couldn't find any thing so if you don't mind I'll just ask. Now I know kids can't buy knives but are they allowed to carry them? To be specific my son is 13. 2 Christmases ago my partner bought him a SAK which he uses very well, no silliness at all. Last Christmas I got him a Champ to go with it.

I always carry my SAKs in a pouch on my belt. I was thinking of getting him a pouch but is it legal for him to actually carry the SAK on him? This hasn't cropped up until now as when we usually go out he keeps his SAK in my bag and I pass it to him when he wants to use it.

Cheers :winking71

Hi Stevie

It is legal, but not on school premises. I wouldn't suggest he goes out alone/with mates with it either, unless you live in a very rural area.

With an adult he is fine.

Its not actually illegal as such but potentially a bit iffy if he's on his own. If he's with you then I don't think that there would be any problem at all.

It a bit sad that the the issue of whether a 13yr old lad will get arrested for carrying a swiss army knife even arises at all :(

Indeed. I used to take a SAK to primary school from about eight years old. It was a small village school next to the Fens but I bet they have metal detectors there as well now........

I can't remember a time when I didn't have a knife of some sort in my pocket. I don't know if I'd let a child of mine carry one now. That breaks my heart. Glad I don't have kids really, all the more toys for me.

Same as that mate. Growing up safely out of the way of the general public back in the 80's my friends & I used to carry all kinds of stuff as young teenagers. Some of it I'd never even contimplate these days.

I'll just point out that in 1997 there was a law passed that allowed under 16's to buy sub 3inch non locking folders and blades fixed in a housing where the blade pertrudes less then 2mm (safety razors and pencil sharpeners).
I'd suggest looking at the mates he hangs about with, if they wont react badly to the knife by all means get him the pouch to carrry it around in. It could come in handy if he uses a bike to get around on.

here is the thread about minors buying knives

When I was a lad you could get a 6 inch FS dagger no problem :D and I bought one at 16 or so.but I had no intention of doing anything with it, I collected it :D .and that was all, when I was in the boyscouts we had sheath knives and campers and I always wanted ( and now possess a swiss army champ :D :D ) and that was it :D :D .and even now on these forums we collect ( sadly for no apparent reason..........and I do question this  ),but at the end of the day it is society that dictates these things :( :( ..and unfortunately we do not hold people accountable for what they do:O :O .there is even talk that "murder" can be down graded.that is the problem.not that kiddies can carry knives, and they are not like guns, if you want to kill somebody with a knife it is a messy buisness :yuck:.the problem is with our society :( :O

Take single malts by the glass only folks. Open a bottle during the afternoon and this could happen to you.

lol

I really think it depends on who it is...

Example 1, PC and try-hard soul crew member.

PC: 'Scuse me young man, may i see what you have there?

Boy: [thick Cardiff accent] Oh's nah bruv. I aint done nuffin to no-one. I is always gettin started on by the 5-0 aint fair likes if you's asks me.

PC: Look mate, we just saw you put what looked to be a knife into your pocket, and you look about 12. We also have claims that you just tried to steal someones shoes, is this correct?

Boy: Nah bruvva!! He was givin me dirty looks like, an i aint done nuffin. So i jus said to him "you's a ****, you *******, just ****** get out mys face beforrrre i spaaaaaaaaarks you out [under breath] and nab yer wallet", NUFFIN ELSE BRUV I SWEARS.

[boy gets knife confiscated, and taken home]

Example two, PC and Little Timmy (in the border of countryside)

PC: Mornin' Lad, whats that on yer belt then?

Timmy: It's a swiss army knife i got for Christmas, officer.

PC: I see, your being careful with it?

Timmy: Of course, as always.

PC: Right you are, have a nice day!

Ok, i'll get me coat.

Highland Park indeed :D
however Danzo I werk in a police station and I see the "thought police" firsthand :( :( .....coppers no bigger than my 13 year old ( with complexes as big as the Blackpool tower because they are diminutive :P ) ..Fer Gawds sake I could pick the buggars up wi' one hand :C :C .I'm not Dwarfist but in all sensibility one has to question the logic of hiring these hobbits.......and have they been trawling " special schools" for theses community Bobbies :O :O ...got to be little, ginger and sad :S
You may werk in Legalise Academia, but I werk with real world Bobbies ( the old ones are all right :D .dixons of Dock green and all that)...but the new class of sociallly correct misfits aren't I .........jest you not .nobody takes the police seriously anymore ( nobody with a criminal record that is  )
And that is my point really, it worked in the past, it doesn't now. In the past I could carry anything I bloody well felt like, offensive, insensitive or otherwise.if I was objectionable or offensive I was treated as being that and nothing else :)
.not now not today......and with that I reach for my can of Carlsberg special brew....and leave British Chisel Collectors ( or british ( if that isn't offensive to anyone :O 0) none sharp pointy collectors :D :D

"lemonade?"
"please"

Bonus points for knowing what that's from and why it has anything to do with children and knives
