Otherwise Stewart Marsh makes clones that by all accounts are superior to anything by Wilkinson Sword and with a choice of handle materials.

I agree...the fixation with the Woodlore knife by a large amount of people, does not make it the best at everything..there are "lesser" alternatives, that are MUCH better value for money...

In many ways it coudl be argued that a knife by one of the lesser known makers should be of more interest to a collector than a woodlore. After all there are quite a few woodlores about plus all of the WS replicas. I think a proper custom would be much more fun, you'd get the pleasure of choosing and ordering a knife thats made especially for you.

From the purely "collector" point of view though...I can see the interest in a AW Woodlore just as in a Fairbairn-Sykes say, where better knives exist even to the same design.

You pays your money and takes your choice, I just hope it's an informed choice.

Thanks very much for all the advise. I wanted the AW Woodlore from a collectors point of view as you said Basemetal, however i would use it. I have had a look at the Stuart Marsh knives and they do look identical.

Narsil, you are also right, i do like the idea of choosing a knife especially for me, the wood etc. But in my head, i had my heart set on a AW woodlore. I dont know if i would always be thinking 'I wish it was a Woodlore'.

The price of the Stuart Marsh is appealing though as Woodlores seem to be selling for daft money. :S

I think the WL knives' high selling price has more to do with RM than AW... ;) :P

Further on the Stuart Marsh Knives, Stuart did research the Woodlore before he made his own, and he uses the same steel, very similar blade shape and grind, same construction methods and offers a wider choice of materials with no (AFAIK) wating list. Search the forums to see some of the threads.

My guess is that many who own an AW Woodlore would have liked a SM had they been available! Also check out Paul "BushmanUK" 's excellent bushcraft knives.

I agree, apart from the name I don't think that there is anything special about a woodlore. It is at the end of the day quite a basic knife.

Did i not hear rumblings about poor blade grinds and other QC issues with the SM knives ???
I have a lot of knives but IMO the Woodlore is still hard to beat as a bushcraft knife.
Buy a WS Micarta ,it's the cheapest way to a Woodlore ,you get the RM connection ,no waiting list and the scales won't let you down.
If you hate it sell it on evil bay and make a profit and if you love it order an AW and use the WS untill it's ready then sell it on evil bay and make a profit.
I bought a WS and planned to order an AW but ended up keeping the WS as it's a cracking knife and (much as i love his knives) i can't see how the AW version is worth the extra dosh.

The poor blade grinds and blunt edges reported on BB were on WS Micartas...
Both the ones I've personally seen had assymetric grinds and poorly finished tips.

I had to regrind my own one.

I think the SM thread was on BCUK.
I did have a PM regards poor quality on the SM knives when i was trying to buy a few and im not sure if it was resolved so i'd rather not say any more until i know what happened.
I have heard bad reports about the WS grinds etc. but my 3 WS Micarta's are all fine.
They didn't come shaving sharp but i only had to sharpen them as normal ,no excessive grinding or reprofiling required.
One has been used alot in the last year and i wouldn't be without it ,IMO it was worth the money at £95.00 ,now at £115 from Woodlore and more on ebay im not so sure as there a lot of alternatives but if you want a RM connection.......
It's also one of the only knives that you can buy ,use and sell on later to make a profit.
