Strange for the sudden explosion in population, but good news for hunters I guess.
Never been hunting myself, though I think I'd like to at least give it a try. Not sure how I would fair....but I'd like to find out, I think.
In my part of France the hunt is a bit worrying, First thing in the morning is safe but after a liquid brunch it's a bunch of pissed up blokes wondering the fields with shotguns and speeding up and down the lanes in a 4X4 convoy
Yum-yum - just about my favourite meat - to see this on the menu more will please me no end.
Hunting is a great sport (in my book, provided it is for the pot) however these critters are pretty damn dangerous.......they're not sweet little piggies, far from it.
An injured adult wild boar will reek havoc if you get into close quarters with it, they are mean and oh so strong.
In eastern Europe they have developed, for some years now, pretty fearsome wild boar hunting knives too.
Like paint-balling, there are packages you can buy to fly to Florida to hunt them with spears and knives :O
.......but to see wild boar on the table more often - bring it on.

That's tending to die out where we are, but unfortunately you still see it. There's a program where we are to get youngsters into hunting and to bring them up responsibly - the non-p!ss-artist hunters are really worried about the image and are trying to deal with it.

There's a place in Chipping Lancashire that farms wild boar in the UK, we hit the shop whenever we're passing, I don't know if they mail order tho. would quite fancy going hunting them.

nice to see a wild species making a comeback in our ever more urbanised world.
I hope I get to see one next year before the shooters waste em all.

Sounds like my kind of day out.

heard about this from the owner of my local hunting/fishing/shooting place a few weeks ago, when i mentioned that there are a few wild in this country and that it'd be nice to see it in the butchers he just laughed, saying something that good would never make it as far as a butchers counter!!!

I ride in France a great deal - this scares the ess-aitch-one-tee out of me - just hope they're more scared of the sound of a Harley :O
Many years ago, I spent a weekend out with 'hunters' in Spain. By Saturday pm most of them were too drunk to drive or shoot. Early on the Sunday the sober ones went out and we shot 4 wild boar between us, in the middle of a big sugar beet field.. It was amazing, I have never seen so many, they were everywhere; the group we found was about 50 strong, with some big males and lots of little ones running around. They had eaten about half the field and taken out most of the fence.

I recorded a TV segment last spring on one of our cable channels, "The Pig Bomb" that discussed this topic of wild pig populations exploding around the world and the devastating effect on crops. It was a very interesting segment and very alarming, I've always wanted to hunt wild boar but I would have to travel a long ways to hunt them, it looks like they're coming our way soon and when they get here I'll be an avid wild boar hunter.
Our Department of Natural Resources people have a web site and map of my area showing wild pig sightings but I haven't heard of any first hand accounts of sightings, yet.

I was going to say! Any pics of the car after the encounter

A colleague told me recently that he was driving back to Amman via the Dead Sea up Wadi Mujib late at night. Suddenly ahead of him he saw two very bright eyes shining in the reflection of his car headlamps at roughly the same height as his eye level.
As the car got closer he saw ahead of him in the middle of the road a Hyena! Very large, he braked and knew he could not stop in time. The Hyena fortunately just walked out of the way far enough for him to avoid it.
now these Desert Hyena are solitary and a lot larger than the African ones so I am told.
I would not like to meet one or strike with a car, they would make mincemeat of you, in more than one way!
We also have a very large population of wild boar in the wadi's around the Dead Sea, very popular sport with the Christian community, not the Muslim though!

I have actually, somewhere on a disk for the insurance claim. But it's not a lot to look at it was mainly the floor pan that took the brunt of the damage but the fiberglass bumper, front grill, rad, cross member, engine mount, bonnet, bonnet catch, lights and a whole host of things that racked up the claim. the floor pan was so bad that the drivers chair was tilted and you couldn't put your feet under the chair if you sat in the back. But the boar was rolled down a hill buy the car then the car drove over the boar causing the damage to the floor pan
My dad was real lucky as I've heard the bar stories of a big boar tipping a 4x4 over in a crash
One of my friends drove his motorbike into a lion asleep on the road in Zimbabwe.
Fortunately the impact killed the lion and the jeep following behind picked up my friend

We saw one this summer as we came back from the MovenPick to Amman late at night...
a friend told me that in Israel they keep pigs but on pallets, not to touch the ground because the soil is holy. Although the Bacon Sausage sandwich at the local deli is called the Rabbi and/or Imam Special... :)

An interesting perspective on dietary prosciptions can be found in: [I]PURITY AND DANGER[I] by Mary Douglas.
off thread?
I have family in the south of France. When I am there they always warn me about making sure the gates to the courtyard are closed at night as the wild pig would come in and mess the place up. Also one might run into one in the middle of the night while heading to the main house to use the restroom. I would love to hunt them...

Wild Boar, nothing cute about them at all; massive rats with attitude. They eat and tear up everything in their wake. They breed like rabbits too.
Hunted properly they are great sport and the numbers can be kept tolerable; taste good too. If the population gets out of hand which is easily done they can devastate an area and the local wildlife is the first to be steam rolled. They eat everything including ground nesting birds, to ripping up playing fields looking for worms. Gardens are fast food and it takes electric fences and sturdy fences to stop them. So there is nothing romantic about them and I promise you we don't need them in the UK period.

Yup, they're vermin. A couple of times per season they hunt them through the village, get them in the open and shoot them. They absolutely destroy gardens and plough the grass verges of the roads to a waste land. Massive crop losses when a dozen or so hit a field of crops.

We have a specialist team of police that deal with our local boar population.
Had the pleasure of meeting one of them in camo gear with a big rifle one day out walking the dogs. He was trying to be quiet and become at one with the tree but the dog wasn't having that.
Here's a small baby one the dogs caught a few weeks back.

I used to live in Paris, and spend a lot of time in Brittany and in the South West, as well as quite a bit of time around the Fontainebleau forest... Boar populations have been increasing and causing many problems for the last fifteen years.
Increasing damage to fences as the boar force their way into beet, turnip, carrot and maize fields; increased car accidents as drivers hit boar making their way across roads from the forest to the fields... I have friends who are lucky to be alive after hitting a 200kg beast at 90kph....
One of the problems with pigs is there ability to breed, all pig populations need to be heavily controlled as it on takes a decade to go from nothing to critical mass.
And it takes a huge effort to get back on top on populations.

There are apparently a couple of causes. First, a couple of major storms in the last decade devestated vast tracts of forest and woodland. This land is now covered, in many cases, with natural undergrowth, saplings, bushes etc...all-in-all a haven for them to breed and hide in. Secondly, there have been many mild winters which have meant that litters have not been thinned by the weather. There's also an increase in land used for corn, and a decrease in the numbers of hunters.
