I like opinels, inexpensive but they take a nice edge

is it me or is the blade thicker on the garden model than the other ones?

It's strange , i have never seen this model. It's interresting, i think i will find one and play with it. I'm sure we can find a lot of thing to do with this great base.

A someone said on BB recently...it looks like the 3 most common mods to a standard Opinel #8. Spearpoint, Lanyard hole and thinned tail. :D

Is the blade any different from the standard opinel? It might be more fun to mod a standard one.

So the question is, what's the cost compared to a normal #8? You can mod a standard opy really quickly after
you have done a few. I just got a walnut handled opy and I buffed the tail down (kept it dark, thus no stain), drilled the lanyard hole and made a spearpoint in about 5 minutes before work one morning.

Thats a cool looking little opinel there.

Yep I'm one of those folks too except with a number 9.

How does a poor colonist go about obtaining an Opinel Couteau de Jardin #08? :S

Thanks bushwacker. I found a link there but shipping is a killer. Costs more than three knives.

did you try the canadians Hoodoo? They pretty close to the French sometimes

I tried that site but they don't carry the Opinel Couteau de Jardin #08. And they are a little pricey too. I normally pay almost half of what they are charging for opinels.

I've found a solution though. Much thanks for everyone's help.

Well, there has been a couple of interesting cheap folders recently here.

The couteau de jardin is interesting, and the blade seems extra big for the "tuned" handle. The handle is actually a normal handle shaped like an effilé.

Here, you can see a coyote, made by another company with exactely the same locking system which includes a lock in closed position. the steel is 12C27, extremely well ground, and probably with a cryo treatment, as I found it to be as good as a mora. they also do carbon, retail price 6.5 Euro!!!! The wood seems less sensible to swelling than on the opis, the 2 rings at the end are rubber.

below is a #8 as reference. arround 8.5 to 10 euro for a fancy wood one, depending on wood

Below is the couteau de jardin, same price, 9 euro.

Voila. ;-)

Merci!

Welcome back Danzo :D

I did recognize them as O-Rings Jon. I've been diving for thirty years and I think I still have one up one nostril.

I was wondering what they were doing there on the end of the knife.

Well mates, I have no idea for the rings at the end of the knife, except that it makes the whole thing less slippery, and mabe can be used as a cork thought I wonder where as the size is not standard.

The knife is brand new, maker is facosa, and no, I am also looking for an internet source, but they where common in thiers and must be available at most french cuttler shops.

They are any way worth every cent they cost, as they come out as opinel contenders for a cheaper price, and really the 12c27 is really excellently treated with a mirror polish in addition (would not surprize me if the blades were made in sweden).

The wood they use is harder, and better varnished than the opinel's.
this thing will do ok being wet for some time...

[just contacted Courty to see if I could get some, but got a (bit too) short answer telling "we do not work with facosa company, regards" hem, this needs investigation]

Try this, Danzo.

No list of resellers, but you might be able to order direct from the manufacturer.

The website is only in French, for now.

Keith, I am actually considering to order a batch from the manufacturer with our logo on it. It just depends the minimum number.

Danzo, mate, it is outdoors-magazine,com, that is why ;-)

For Courty's comment, either they may have been in a hurry.

I wondered about the O-ring at the end of this window punch when I got it. It must be a "grip" thing.

If you like opinel you will like the coyote knives also.
I was able to get some from www.boker.de, they dont have them listed in the shop but they are in stock. Item number is 01FA011 for the 12C27 Blade and the dark brown handle. Price was 11,5 €. If you call them or send an email maybe they can help you. For me it was easy because I live in the same country but as far as I know they also ship within europe. Maybe this helps. I did send an email to the manufacturer (facosa)but no reply so far. Maybe I should have learned speaking french...

Welcome to the forums Rolynd, I'm not to sure I like the handle on the Coyote, looks a bit to tubular for my tastes, but I bet that top Opinel could tell a few stories :D
