I have a curved adze, a german make. It's a mid-sized tool, handle about 18" long. Hmm - googled - it's one of these similar adze on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.ie/SUPERB-CURVED-ADZE-MULLER-AXE-HATCHET-VGC-TOOL-/370461220432)

Not used it much mostly because I don't get the opportunity, but also because it has a terrible blade shape.

The bevel is on the inside of the blade, and is very steep. I reckon it must be nearly 30degrees, possibly more. Combined with a 6mm blade thickness, it tends to tear out or jamb in the wood, rather than take smooth chips.

Had pretty much given up on it, until on the weekend I needed to roughly reduce the thickness of a plank end by 10mm. Grabbed the adze, went for it, and was surprised how little time it took.

I reckon it could be improved by reducing the angle of the bevel - a difficult job, might be able to do it with very careful use of angle grinder. What does the panel recommend?

Sandpaper/emery wrapped around a piece of dowel

I don't have worries about my abilities with the angle grinder - I can take paint off steel without leaving scratches - just advice about re-working the edge angles and whether I'm barking up the wrong tree.

The steel on the adze seems very hard - at least as hard as a GB axe. Chainsaw file doesn't dig in.

You might try a sanding drum on an electric drill with a progression of grits.
