View Full Version : peter atwood prybaby

I'm looking into getting hold of a basic prybaby, like this;
http://www.phlaunt.com/atwoodknives/10959617.php
and i thought it might be an idea for a group buy.
I have emailed Peter Atwood and he reckons he will knock off 10% if i buy 10. :)
ie 10 for $315 this is about £17.40 each
but there is also postage over here and possible customs charges to be included and the uk p&p
Any idea how much the customs fee would be?
Is anybody interested in this general idea?
I've not done a group buy before but i think this could work, i'm just waiting to hear how much the postage will be from the US.
What do ya think?
Love the idea! :) Group buys are great. :D
Please put me down for one if this goes ahead.
I think Customs will be 17.5% of the total shipped package including postage. There could also be a 5% ?? (Help pleae) duty fee as well. Plus the post office or parcel farce fee for taking the money off you £10-15.
I am sure others may know this in a little more detail.
Hope this works out. They look to be great tools. I had a need for one the other day. The LM Micra had to do! ;)
Thanks
Mark

These are the postal options i have been given:
Well, I checked with UPS and it would be $60 to ship with them but you get real tracking.
With the US Post Office the cost would be $25 for
Express Mail but you don't get tracking and no guarantees if it is lost but it gets there in a few days.
With Global Priority Mail from the US post Office it would be $10 but no tracking and no insurance and it gets there in a week or so.
Now it's a question of doing the maths!!! :C

This is the info i have re customs charges:
There are customs charges only on goods valued over GBP18 (merchandise) or over GBP36 (gifts).
Over these amounts and you may be charged duty (usually around 5%, but it depends on the product) plus 17.5% VAT --- these percentages apply to the entire value of the item including shipping. In practice, it is generally pot-luck whether a dutiable package has fees levied on it by customs or not.
If customs charges are levied, there will also be a handling charge from the delivery company:
Post Office £4.00
ParcelForce £8.00
UPS £10.00 or 2% of goods value, whichever is larger
DHL £1.25 or 2% of goods value, whichever is larger
FedEx £4.50
SO...
$315 + 60 = 375
assume we get charged %5 = + $18.75 total = 393.75
17.5% of $393.75 = $68.91
TOTAL = $462.66
This works out at just over £25 each
Not included is the £4 post office fee!
plus UK p&p! Nooooooo...
Let me know what you think?
could be too expensive..?

I think that you would get 9 takers, even at £25, me for one for example....
The USPS Global priority is a good service that sometimes seems to smeak past the customs charges ;)
I know that it complicates things a little for you, but does the discount hold good if someone wanted, for example, one of the Titanium Prybaby's (http://www.phlaunt.com/atwoodknives/10968323.php) instead? It might also up the number of units bought.
Cheers,

I will look into this as this develops but regarding numbers he only makes the prybabys in small batches and so 10 was the figure he gave me. I think the titanium ones are each custom designed and this may slow down the process, but i will ask anyway!!
cheers
dam, i think £25 is a bit much for me to shell out on one of these.. i would have been in if it could be kept around the £18ish mark! cant you get peter to send them seperatly so that they dont go over the £18 mark and there for costoms charges etc dont apply?
Tiffers
27-08-05, 12:07 PM
I would imagine that if Peter was to send them out individually then the 10% discount would be gone as that discount probably reflects the time saved by just packing up one parcel of prybabies rather than 10 parcels.
Just my thought on it:)
Tiffers
neill116
27-08-05, 12:45 PM
Ok here is the alternative;
I asked what the cost would be to send them individually but this would be at full price and not insured or tracked.
It is $5 for the shipping for one or two shipped in the small Global Priority envelope, so $40 or $75 total.
Not sure if he will do the 10% off 10 and package them in pairs for $5 ( if i had 4 others to do this) if he did then that would be $68 for 2, $34 each = about £19 but this assumes no custom charge!!!
This is not an option as discount only applies to 10. Tiffers was right i think. :)
It may be best just to get 2 and hope they get through without custom charges!
Or go global priority mail for $10 and hope all goes well and get 10 for $325 = £18 :D each but everyone would have to know that should charges be applied it could be more like £25+
I'm up for one. Do try and avoid UPS like you would avoid Leprosy though. The package will get full VAT, Duty, Import Tax, Luxury Tax, Thumb Tax and any other tax they can make up, and then a handling charge when ParcelTheft lie about not being able to deliver it.

Put me down for one.
A little customisation on the bottle opener and you have a nifty little belt cutter so got to be time for a new key ring.

Id be up for a titanium pry-baby, if possible,
If not, i would also be up for a plain one.

that's 8 :D
I'm afraid ordering anything different is out of the question, i've tried but i'm in danger of really annoying Mr attwood!!
I think the best plan is to go for US post office Express Mail for $25 ( this avoids UPS -Danzo! :) , and reduces shipping costs).
This puts our total at $340 = about £19
If we get customs charges +5% +17.5%
the total is $420 = about £23.25
So with Uk postage our price range is between £20-£25
The only reservation i have is what happens if package goes missing (worst case scenario), I'm down nearly £190 and may lose testicle/s shortly after!! :C
I need your full backing on this.
Please let me know what you think and i'll put the order in ( i'm sure we'll get 2 more soon!! :) )
I think you are on the right track. :) USPS is excellent.
Only things I've ever had go missing from the US were some ARC's sent by FEDEX. The annoying thing is they still sent me the customs bill for the items they lost and the follow up threatning letter when I did not pay it. NEVER EVER EVER use FEDEX for anything if possible. Gits.
Thanks

Cool guys thanks for the support.
I think paypal payments will be fine or cheques if you like. Not sure if there are paypal fees?
Put me down for one if you go ahead, the S30V suits me fine.
If worried by the vagaries of the international postage system, you could always ask folk for cash up front..? :ashamed05
can't take credit card paypal unless you're business? then about 4% is what it works out at.

ok folks i've heard from mr atwood today;
Hi Neill,

>
> Anyway, these will be ready to ship today. The total will be $340.

I have agreed to this (and by default so have those on the list) and sent payment so should get them in a few days. I wont ask for payment in advance as we still dont know if our friends at HM customs will want some dosh!!! b****rds!! :C
So far the cost is £19.31 based on paypal's exchange rate.
I'll let you know what's happening when i do. :)
I'll keep you posted! :D
Thanks. Looking Good. :)

The good news is that they have arrived today safe and sound. :)
The bad news is that i had a note from Parcelforce which said there was £55.02 to pay before i could get them.
The fees were
£7.03 import duty
£34.49 vat
£13.50 parcel force clearance fee :X
So our total per prybaby is
£19.31+£5.50= £24.81
plus uk postage plus 3.5% paypal + .20p!
I think 1st class will be about 30-50p
or 1st or 2nd class recorded may be upto £1
I'll check this out tomorrow as i'm not sure of weights
If we assume recorded delivery of about £1 then the total per prybaby will be £26.91!
Let me know how you want them delivered and i will try and get them sent this week once i have final costs and payments.
:D
Neill
 doh that is bad news but atleast they arived safe :)
i would prefer 1st class recorded delivary. have you thought of package??
I'll be away for a week from tonight. So don't worry I'm not ignoring you. :)
I'll pay you when I get back on Sunday if that's OK?
Thanks

No worries Cones, in your own time.
Just so everyone knows though i'm off to Portugal on the 19th so if i dont get payment before that it'll have to wait 2 weeks.( maybe should have sent them to Portugal to avoid duty but dont know their customs set up - anyone know?)
I'll let you know postage options tomorrow

Ah. Im afraid £27 is a bit too steep for me- I'm very sorry, but i just cant afford it at the moment, i believe damage1978 has first reserve.
Im very sorry about this, however, in the unlikely event someone dosent snap up my place, ill happily buy the prybaby anyway.
Sorry again,
Dominic
Neill, when you know costs for 1st class recorded delivery postage, could you PM or e-mail me details of to whom you would like a cheque to be made payable, and to what address you'd like it sent, and i'll get payment to you ASAP.
Even though HM's revenue men and the Royal Mail took their pound of flesh, I'd still like to thank you sincerely for going through all the grief to try and get us a good deal!

I'd be interested to hear about any carrying suggestions, it seems like it would probably wear out my pocket and could be uncomfortable! Maybe we should have a contest to see who can make the best carry suggestion.
I would like to combine it with an edc knife belt pouch. I'm thinking of getting a Spydie Uk penknife - may try and make a pouch to combine the two.
Let me know how you carry yours!! ;)

Mne arrived today thanks neall. I searched around to try and find uses for it but found few in a flowershop. the I found the ultimate use. You talk about it when people come into the shop. "whats that fingy mate. "its a prybaby" what? I said a prybaby, a baby prybar. corr thats cool. So you want to buy some Roses then. Ere yes I suppose so.

I eventually found I could fit mine into my bi-fold wallet. My wallet has a zipped coin pouch, and the Prybaby stands up in it with the end just peaking out. If I'm lucky the coins lie to the side of it, so it doesn't add thickness to the wallet.
If anyone has both Prybaby and PocketWrench, I'd love to see a comparative review. The PocketWrench looks like it might be more useful.
Got mine today in the post.
Many Thanks. :D

I feel a new thread coming on - "What do you do with yours...?"
Stonehard uses his as a talking point in his shop,
Danzo uses his for revenge burglaries,
and I've used mine to open a bottle of beer!
Fixed a binding machine with mine today.
Well, freed the two stuck binding 'punches' in the machine, which had been taken apart with an allen key and my LM Wave.
Having fixed the recalcitrant b*stard and feeling rather pleased with myself; it's replacement arrived having been ordered the day before.
My chagrin tempered by the fact I've probably just inherited a £600 binding machine... :D
Well done Mr Atwood, not even scratched!
