just found this thread......
i have just built a similair set up for my caravan, aldi domestic dish and freesat kit, and a second hand tripod, plus some assorted clamps and brackets, which set me back about the same as your linked set up. I wish i'd bought your version!
as to setting it up, piece of cake. it took me under 3 mins the first time i tried using the ( excellent) instructions here:

crystal clear picture in an area with no digital reception.

im struggling to get mine tuned in fast but dim ive just read your article link again
and see a couple of things i missed so ill try again later but its frustating when it does not work .
3 mins im now on about 1 1/2 hours and not a thing lol.
Missed this thread somehow
I've got a similar set up 'cept that I use my old Skybox from when we changed to over to HD
Couple of things that I found out: the signal seems far more sensitive to tune in than my domestic set up, trees and 'line of site' have quite an impact on the signal. There are now loads of sat dishes being used on sites so a quick peek on where everyone else has their dish pointed helps initially
It's worth trying to make the tripod and dish as secure as possible - peg it down and clamps etc..
Last year I paid an extra tenner to Sky and was able to receive my usual chanels (apart from the HD ones) on the old box - I found them very helpful at Sky when I explained that I wanted to use it in me caravan
Having said all that, SWMBO thought it was a complete waste of time 'co everytime I sat down to watch it, I fell fast asleep :P

do i need a card to begin with
ive got a reasonable signal according to finder and box set up screen but still everytime it says no signal im starting to think i need a card for the box??.
thanks
I wouldn't have thought you would have needed a card for a Freestat box
More likely you need to adjust the dish a bit more
To be honest, I didn't find the signal meter to be of much use, on the sky box there is a signal test page which I used - it has three sliding bars to indicate signal strength - so I fiddled with the dish and LNB while SWMBO watched the screen.
It can be frustrating as the screen can go from blank to an excellent picture - there doesn't seem to be any 'in between' unlike the old analogue signal
You prolly know that fine adjustment can be achieved by twisting the LNB
You might find this link (http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/) useful - I did
