View Full Version : Request for a Manix passaround.

Quickbeam

I hope you won't find this too pushy.

I've been seriously thinking of investing in either a Manix or saving up for a Sebenza. I have real trouble judging the scale of knives from their photos, even with measurements. Is it possible to put in a request for a Manix passaround?

C'mon Nick, you know how it works:rolleyes:

Tell people that you're running a passaround for those that missed out on the last Manix & split the cost, that way you'll see what they're like at a fraction of the cost & you may even win it;)

OK, I know how it works NOW, thanks Colin. :)

Anyone interested? I guess we'd need 6 or seven people before the cost is low enough to consider going ahead.

We could either buy from a UK suplier like Joe (approx £100) or try our luck at importing one from the US ( approx £70)

Nick I know what you mean about the difficulty in judging scale. It's easy -they're always smaller  -except in the case of the Manix, that is :D Yay!

Earlier in the year Danzo and Hellz lent me their Manix and Lil Temperance so I could get a feel for them. (BTW -that was your other option -borrow one!).
Here's a link comparing those two (not a Sebenza in sight but I'm a low end to middle sort of guy  ). It shows you a Manix against some of its peers and in a size 10 paw...

We will follow the superb guidelines in Yog's sticky Here (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1533)

Feel free to use but not abuse the knife. If you can, please sharpen the knife before you pass it on. If anyone isn't sure that they can sharpen the blade without causing damage we can re-jig the order slightly.

At the end of the passaround the knife will be raffled. I'll ask an independent adjudicator to do the raffle, or if I can't find one I'll step out of the raffle and draw the name out of a hat myself.

Considering the value of the knife I would prefer to use RMSD as standard for post.

You're all old hands at this, I don't know why I'm stating the obvious to you ! :D

The Manix has arrived in time for my trip to the lakes !!! :D

First impression are a little predictable. Just like most of the other comments I have read, the manix is HUGE :O . In fact it is almost intimidating, I'm not sure my everyday cutting jobs are fit for such a mighty knife. Its crying out for some real big jobs like felling a small tree. I can't imagine anyone needing a bigger folder. Having said that it does grow on you and pretty soon you come up with a long list of Manix size jobs like clearing jungle, cutting back the Budlea or carving the Sunday joint. Straight out of the box it was very sharp, easily shaving individual arm hairs with no pressure.

Anyway, I'll post more once I've had time to test it out further.

Are we all happy to follow the order on the original list? I'll post it on to Colin next Monday.

OK,

Got it today, thanks Nick:)

First of all, it's HUUUGE!!! m ade for someone with much bigger hands (or with thick gloves) than me (long 'n' slim fingers, not bunches of bananas)

Second of all, it's built like a tank! sideplay onna blade is non-existant, clicks into locking position satisfyingly, Mmmmm, lock-back:D:D:D

I don't generally like folding knives, but somehow this is almost a fixed blade with a handy dandy "get smaller" facility.

I like the Manix, but am looking at the size differences in the Mini now;)

Nice knife though.

P.S. I like the thumb ramp very much:D

Quickbeam
18-10-05, 10:19 PM
It compliments the UK very well. If you had a job that needed a little more muscle the Manix would definitely be up for the job, so with a UKPK and a Manix you'd have every base covered.

I took the Manix with me for a week in the Lakes. I found I hardly had the opportunity to use it as I was always around NKP and knew the Manix would upset them. They had a hard enought job accepting my UKPK.

Before the Manix arrived I was concerned how the flat scales would feel when putting the knife to use. They are much thicker that the scales on the UKPK beacuse of the metal liners and were quite comfortable. Personally I think I'd go for the Manix over the Mini as there are plenty of other mid size lock knives out there and the Manix delivers maximum cutting power from a lock knife. If the Manix can't handle the job I guess you'd need a fixed blade or even a hatchet!

Fit and finish were pretty good but not perfect. There is a small gap, maybe 2mm, where the lock meets the back of the knife. It was too small to take a photo but the lock was not cut off at 90 degrees. (Colin may be able to explain with the correct terminology). This was purely cosmetic and didn't affect the use of the knife at all. Also the lock did not sit perfectly flush when the knife blade was out.

If I don't win the raffle I'll definitely buy one. In fact I'm not patient enough to wait!

More later... :)

ElThomsono

Later now so here's some more:

It's grown on me, and by that I mean it's shrunk on me :S

At first I figured it was too big, as in "if I ever needed a knife this big, it'd be a fixed blade". But now it seems smaller, and I can see why you'd want this sort of "small big knife", it hides its size well.

Usual spyderco rules apply, easy one handed opening, excellent finish and razor sharp. Strangely though, I'd actually prefer a boye dent on this one

Fits the hand nicey, I found the choke grip gives you a lot of fine control and the standard palm-filler makes it feel secure.

Sharpened up and packed, this one gets sent out to Tiffers tomorrow.

Received today thanks tiffers.:D
I've had a quick play this evening...
I think someone may have mentioned it's big;)
Yes it is, but no bigger than I thought it'd be and not unwieldley - just big.
I like the way there are various hand holds vut into the shape of the blade and handle.
The shape of the blade is better than the Military (the only other Spyderco I've handled except my UKPK), the blade is a drop point and much deeper. I think it's a better shape for general bushcrafting stuff and it looks less threatening.
It cuts very well, it was shaving sharp when I got it, well done to Tiffers, she knows how to sharpen a blade :)
I was very impressed with the way it makes feather sticks. the feathers were so thin, they even took from a fire steel - something I've never done before !!!
which brings me onto the next thing, it throws sparks like a wild thing ! The back of the blade has a great edge to it. When running it down the firesteel to create a pile of shavings it's actually hard not to get them to light until you actualy want them to.
Next I prepped the pheasants I had hanging, it fell through the meat like it wasn't there.

Overall I'm impressed with this knife. Yes it's big, possibly too big ???? I think the mini manix would be great - as long as it doesn't loose anything by being smaller. On the downside I don't like the black slabs, they make it look too military for me. If I had it I'd have to change those (or get someone to change them for me!)
I'll play with it for a little longer and then pass it on , who's next on the list?

I'd like to say thanks for letting me in on this passround.:D much appreciated.

Hi Nick,

I haven't seen the passround Manix, but the points you make above certainly do not applt to mine. The locking lever is flush with the top of the liners whether the blade is open or closed. The little gap you refer to at the back of the lever, is I suspect, necessary to allow the lever to be depressed. If there was a smaller gap, it's possible that if a small foreign object, say a grain of sand, or a bit of pocket fluff got in, then the lock might bind on opening or closing, or even jam completely.

I think that the manix is just astonishingly good. For the price, I don't think you will find a better folder.

Hi Nick,

The little gap you refer to at the back of the lever, is I suspect, necessary to allow the lever to be depressed. If there was a smaller gap, it's possible that if a small foreign object, say a grain of sand, or a bit of pocket fluff got in, then the lock might bind on opening or closing, or even jam completely.

Hi Doug, I don't mind the little gap, I would just have preferred the two faces to have been cut of square. The gap on the passaround Manix has a trapezium shaped gap, I'd prefer the gap to be a rectangle. A minor point, I know.

The Manix I bought doesn't have either of these problems.

I agree that you get plenty of knife for your money.

I agree Nick. The gap is OK but the funny shape stands out a mile.

Sent to Stew today RMSD along with the 12g cases from BCUK as requested.

Not at all. It was mainly due to the post office's inability to answer a phone!

Arrived today,thanks Stew.

Cool. Sorry about the delay but as I was in the PO on saturday, the postman turned up while I was actually at the counter so I missed it getting to you a day earlier by seconds.

My thoughts?

It's big. I wasn't quite prepared for actually how big it would be. I don't generally carry a "large" knife when out and about as I can do a fair amount with a small knife & axe/billhook/golok combo but I reckon this could cope quite nicely if I only wanted to carry one cutter.

I recieved my felleskap the day I posted the manix out but these too seem very comparable in size. Danzo, am I right in thinking you have both? Could you do a side by side shot for me please as I'm curious how they compare.

My housemates comment when I pulled the Manix out of it's packaging, "What do you need a knife that big for???" :D

Just a quick photo to show the size of the "pocket folder" Manix compared to the BRK&T Micro Canadian fixed blade which is a regular dog walk carry.

Stew, I missed your post. I'll do a pic of the Manix, D'Allara and Felleskap as soon as I can. The Manix and Felleskap are about the same size with the Manix being half as wide again.

Manix gone off to Gurushaun.:)

Sad to see it go:(

I will not even attempt to write a review after reading this:

http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9521&page=2

However I liked it a lot.It was the first spydie I have handled as I have always been put off by the "funny" shape.

The Manix is big but not too big.It is a well designed, comfortable to use workhorse. It would make an acceptable back up to a fixed blade,or could be carried where a fixed blade would worry NKP.

I am now a Spydie convert.

The lottery date for the raffle will be Saturday 4th Feb. This should give AndyLaser plenty of time to have a play.

If anyone wants to swap their set of numbers with me they have until Saturday 28th Jan.

Thanks for making this passaround a successful one and good luck everyone.

As Andylaser doesnt look like he will get the manix till midweek, do we want to hold off doing the draw until next weeks midweek lottery draw? It seems a bit unfair otherwise even if it was cos he forgot he was involved on this passaround ;)

Lets keep the original date of the draw, but give Andy another week after it to have a play with the Manix. He can then post it on to me, I mean the lucky winner :D, around the 11th.

I'd hate someone to feel they would have won it but didn't because we changed the draw date.

Sound OK ?

It opens with a rather satisfying "clack" and its lock up is solid. It has made short work of everything I have sliced with it, including paper, hair and soft tomatoes. I think it is without doubt, the nicest Spyderco I have had the opportunity to play with. Period!

I may have to buy one of these.:D

Thank you for the opportunity to play.
