i have my insurance for my mitsubishi challenger and owing to the rising cost of diesel have had to buy another car to do the 80 mile round trip to and from work .
problem is , to insure another car i am starting again with all my no claims discount . being non transferable . as i want to keep both cars . i cant seem to find a company to insure two cars on the same policy .
the figures are silly
"p" redg passat 1900 tdi £800 per year . no ,no claims
"T " redg challenger 2.5 gls £540 per year . 70% no claims discount
i have the passat as an add'on to my insurance for the challenger which cost £50 for one month . but i can only do this once :(
any help or advice appreciated

Some companies definitely do multi car policies, cos I have had one, or been offered one before. Admiral perhaps?

LV definitely do a 2 car policy. There are also a few TV ads offering this service, Admiral, Direct line and Tesco also seem to do it.

Worth phoning around -especially the multi-car policies -as some do introductory deals for the second car. Also make sure you strip down the mileage on your other car, and try removing commuting from its usage (just leave 'leisure' ).

I've found Admiral quite good price-wise, but once you have one quote (an email or something you cna forward) you can use this to lever another company.

For 2 cars, you need 2 lots of NCB as you have found out. You'll just have to shop around for the cheapest or insure TPF&T till you have built up your NCB. IIRC, the bonus jumps pretty quickly in the first couple of years. Worth checking which of the 2 cars has the highest insurance premiums and put the NCB onto that. Some companies might give you a break for insuring both cars with them.

Watch out that TPFT often costs more than FC due to the perceived risk profile that asks for TPFT. You can play around with tonline quote systems and see which variables make a difference. Things like mileage, voluntary excess, legal cover etc . Don't assume that eg more excess makes a difference, and try the effect of different mileage allowances. Eg say you think your 'leisure car' will get 5000 miles, try 6000 to see the cost differences -there are surprises out there.

Many companies have a minimum policy price of around £150 per vehicle, so if you get close to thatyou're doing well.

You could always go with a limited mileage policy for the Mitsi from one of the specialist insurers.
I have my main car on a normal everyday policy & have my fun car insured via a specialist insurer with a specialist policy (kit car policy in my case).
Main reason was the cost and the fact that the specialist policy doesn't earn no claims discount so doen't need no claims discount.

Could be worth a try.

The other option is to try and find an insurer who will let you "mirror" your NCB so you use the same NCB for 2 cars (the idea being you can't drive 2 cars at the same time), but you'll probably need to go through a broker to do this.

The down side is that if you have a claim on one of the vehicles then the premium for both is effected by the reduction in NCB.

you could try a small traders policy
i have one tho i havent traded for a couple of years as such
mines £506 a year fully comp
put your two cars down as your own permanent drives
plus you are insured to drive any other car upto a certan value
