Yesterday Mr. Badger said h'ullo to some cars headlights and then took a dive to some ditch near by my house. (broke his neck BTW.)
Nice Finnish boy that I am, I took Mr. Badger to my house i took his coat off. (with a puukko I made).

Now his coat is in me garrage waiting in woodburr and chips what might happen next.
Do you have any ideas?

Just a point you might like to be aware of. I was told there is an odd law in this country which makes it illegal to own a badger skin no matter where it came from. :S

I don't have any more details but for this reason it is a skin that I do not use in my school talks. :(

Do the Swiss have the same laws?

I guess the stuffed badger I've seen in a pub in Yorkshire must have been fake then...

Or antique ;)

I quote from bardster's link.

"Under the 1992 Act it is an offence to:

possess a dead badger or any part of a badger
"

Surely antique or not, it's still illegal.

It could well be, I assumed that normally these kind of laws aren't retroactive, but then I'm not a lawyer.

I dont know about UK laws and I think those do not apply In France nor Swiss.

I just need to know how to treat it so it wont rot and I could use it to make some decorative sheaths.

Make me a sporran! I'll brave the Sassenach's silly laws for a badger sporran! Or you could make thousands of shaving brushes...

Seriously though, the chaps over on forums.pigeonwatch.co.uk will know - I'm pretty sure it's the same as for rabbits.

I reapparate at your command, oh Spooky Biker.

:D

Most UK laws which ban stuff have an appendice which provides that antiques and collectables are exempt. Basically you shouldn't stuff a badger you accidentally run over or find, but if you already own a stuffed badger then you are fine in the eyes of the law. Probably not in the eyes of the psychiatric profession, but there you go.

:D

As to Juhas situation, I very much doubt if killing badgers is illegal in France as I assume they still hunt them and eat them, if they run out of very tiny birds and reptiles. In Switzerland badgers are neutral, so you may not shoot them.

What to do with the skin? I would make a rather cool hat, personally. Maybe a badger skin top hat, like Slash might wear.

You need some links for tanning hides Juha. BCUK will have some. I understand that soaking in urine in a good start, after you scrape off all the flesh. It destroys all the bits that will rot and does something magic to the hide so it becomes leather.

:yuck:

You can always chuck it into the freezer untill you work out what to do with it.

Sorry on my first post I didn't notice your location. :ashamed01

I was told that it is no coincedence that every animal has enough brains to tan its own hide with !
Mush up the brains with some wood ash and apply to the inside of the hide (after you have scraped it off) stretch it over a frame (but not to tight as it will shrink) and leave it to dry naturaly .

Tanning kit's are cheap and easy to use.
I got mine from Snowdonia Taxidermy Supplies.

Deflesh and wash pelt well then chuck into a bucket of tanning solution for a couple of day's ,remove ,dry and make top hat like Slash might wear.
Easy :)

To skin a badger was easy but to scrape all the fat off is pain ina butt. That one was a fat ba$tard and it has a 1 inch thik layer on it in best places. I must make frame and strech it to be able to clean it throw and throw. I did not save the tail part nor the head, I was skinning it in a pouring rain and knew that if I poked the rear end and cut the smell glands it would ruin the pelt since the smell wont go away. Hear part went to srap also since it was there where the dammage was and not worth patching it up.
