View Full Version : Certification At Bardsters Place : August
Longstrider
29-07-11, 08:43 AM
There are a few threads here and there about the 'gathering' at Bardsters place on 27th and 28th of August, but none that are specific to the comp cutting that will be taking place.
I intend to run a BladeSports Certification on the Saturday, and we'll have a competition on the Sunday.
In order to ensure that we get in a suitable, but sensible amount of supplies of things to cut I could really do with knowing how many cutters to cater for.
If you would like to take your BladeSports Certifiation with me that weekend, please add you name to the appropriate list below.
If you are already Certified and intend to cut inthe competition, please add your name to the appropriate list.
If you are taking your Certification, I will assume that you'll be cutting in the competition the following day unless you state otherwise.
Thank you

Wonderful :(
I'm there on the Saturday but not on the Sunday.
I suppose I'll just get recertificated :(
Seems a waste of a new comp knife :(
I shall have to consult the boss but it would be good to do a day visit for the Sunday. I shall try!

SCA, can't you borrow TNH's knife?
The one from Molletta is lightweight, she can borrow that if she likes.

She probably could, but it'll need re-sharpening between me using it in the compo and her using it in the compo - which breaks compo rules I think...

Thanks Fluffy :)
It's my own fault for not finishing the one I'm grinding for her yet... I've not had time to get in the shed for the last few weekends...

Sorry Dave, I didn't mean that to come across in the way it did.
I hope to have a couple of comp knives with me. I've ordered a Molletta with modified scales to make it comp legal and I'm happy for anybody to have a play with that. I've also ordered something else that I'm hoping will be ready, fingers crossed.
I didn't realise there was a "no sharpening" rule, perhaps Longstrider could explain.

No offence taken or anything mate :)
I just checked Bladesports website and the rule is "A cutter may sharpen his/her knife between separate events but not during an event between cuts. Example: A knife may be sharpened between a qualifying event and the main competition event. A knife may not be sharpened between the 2x4 Cut and the Rope Cut (or any subsequent cuts) during a multi-cut event."
So I suppose that it would actually be OK if Am was to use my knife after me and for it to be resharpened before she uses it...
In which case, I'm happy for Am to use my Farid CPM-10V chopper as long as there's time between me competing and her competing for it to be re-sharpened.

Whenever I let somebody have a go with one of my rifles I always say the same thing, they mustn't shoot the thing better than I can.........do you think we should apply the same rule to people that borrow our knives?;)
Not at all.
That's what competition is there for, to make us better by the efforts of other people :D
I always have a couple of comp cutters there anyway.
Just keen to try the new Farid in D3 and work out how to get the old CPM10V one off THD :]

I agree entirely fluffy, it is always said in jest.

Am is sorted for a loan knife for the weekend, and I've put my Farid up for sale to help fund a comp knife by Longstrider......
Really looking forward to the weekend :D
(And yeah, I reckon the Mrs will out-perform me once certified - she's got a far steadier hands than I, so that's me beat on the straws, and she hates 2x4s more than I do )

If I were to take part in the certification and competition would there be any knives that I could borrow? if not are there any production knives that I could get my hands on?

I will have 'loaner' knives with me for anyone who wants to cut but doesn't have a suitable blade. You might have to use one that's already been round the course and not re-sharpened, but if you can't shave with it I'll give them a quick 'talking to' and make sure they're up to par.

I'll will be bringing a "point of view" camcorder with me, so if anyone wants to record their performance for training, review later or just fun, then I'll be happy to strap it on their bonce :)
(that and I've never seen a competitors eye view video of comp cutting before, so it might be of interest for the bladesports guys in the state too? - I'll upload the videos to YouTube after the event)
UPDATE - Head camera arrived. Tested and picture quality outdoors in daylight is excellent, does full 1080p video with a 127 degree view, or 720p with a 170 degree view. Will probably do the recordings at 720p because that's what my normal camera captures video at, so having both videos at same resolution/quality when uploading to youtube will be best. (That and I don't have a huge memory card, and 1080p eats disk space - I should have an 8gb card for both cameras ready for the campout so that's 2 hours recording on each camera).
The headcam battery is good for 2:30 recording according to the manual (depending on conditions) so I should be able to record everyone if they want a recording. Longstrider has already told me that he wants some "competitor's eye" footage of him cutting, does anyone else?

Mebe, I'll leave my dignity at the door??
Seriously though, if it makes for learning to cut the right way, it's worth a shot

Competition on Saturday, too, so those who have just been certificated can practice and those of us who won't be there Sunday(me) can cut.
I can bring rope and duck tape. and lightweight cardboard tubes. and corks.
I have 3-5 spare/loan choppers (if Ian remembers to bring along the Molletta)

I am pretty sure a well known knife maker and master craftsman will be bringing along my new cutter so fingers crossed I won't need to borrow a knife though it would be great to handle some different cutters for experience and comparion :D

Dave (THD) is working on the vids and Carl (Skullcollector) said he'd upload the ones Jade took "later". The rest of us were too busy watching, nattering or doing to remember to take pics, I think! Three of the people certifying had new cutters from Farid, but I can't remember if he brought any along as well or not...

All three videos are best watched at 720p
Apologies that some of the footage is slightly out of focus - I was shooting with the camera set on Manual Focus at f11 with aperture priority, and found (after filming) that I'd got too close to the benches at times, hence the poor focus.
Enjoy :)
