I have a rarely used powerfile that I am discussing selling to a buddy who wants to use it for flat grinding blades. I tried to convince him to take a decent stand alone 1HP variable speed linisher for the same price, but nooooo, he wanted the power file.

He liked the variable speed and slow speed at the low setting, with minimal loss of torque ad very accurate, stable tracking. He liked the portability. He liked the cheap belts most of all.

Oh well, seeing as he was convinced, I decided to surprise him with a bench rig. It allows blades to be ground on the file with the platen horizontal and facing up.

At the front, I replaced the fore side handle with an angle bracket that will be screwed down to the workbench.

For stability, the motor is also attached to the bench. I milled out a bracket that holds the motor in a channel. The motor is held into the channel with a re-usable heavy cable tie. Recessed long woodscrews hold the bracket to the bench.

There is also provision for a vacuum system attachment, but I doubt that'll get used.

Again, I don't recommend this for someone who intends to grind their own blades, but if you already have a powerfile, this is a good way to mount it to get the most out of it.

I am impressed :)

A very elegant solution.

Have fun

:twak stop showing off and make some knives :nana:

actually thats a grat idea ..i 've played with making bohi using the end of apowerfile but it only works with small blades due to inaccuracy .. this way you could rig a guide and slide a whole katana along with total accuracy

thanks Zeb :)
