I think it's maybe about time we had another pub-meet.

By October the weather is closing-in..........time for a warm huddle at the pub by the river in Putney again.

Anyone up for it at all........?

A bit near my wife and daughters birthdays, but yep I'm in.

Not sure if I'll drive over again, I could come knifeless on the tube.

Good idea Chui.

The 9th would be better for me. Or even late September? Maybe the 25th?

And I came to the last meet on the train with a bag full of knives and stuff, I just made sure I had screen shots of the thread saved to my iPod. And you don't normaly see your average youth carrying £800 worth of knives do you?

Be good to get another meet in, while I'm still living in the catchment area to qualify for membership to the LSECCA..;) May well be moving on very shortly.

Getting out of MDX? I did and I can't blame you for wanting to.
Guess I'll start the list...

Only joking, best of luck. You know those due dates are just a rough guess don't you? Our first one popped out 4 weeks early!

At least we get a table each, maybe two, and should win something in the raffle?

I think we need to settle on one date for people to be able to confirm and commit.

Chui
14-09-11, 08:13 AM
Supa - I agree with you mate......the response from London is just sad and pathetic :confused0:ashamed01

Once I've confirmed the date with the pub we'll try and trumpet the event a tad more.

Essexman
14-09-11, 08:17 AM
Oh I forgot to add. I've had a PM from another member planning to come with some of his large collection of knives. :)

That makes five............

TallNHairyDave
14-09-11, 04:17 PM
Well, five is better than none... but that's frankly a dismal response!

Come on folks in London / Surrey / Kent (and further afield)!

We're friendly. The Pub is nice. The food is good. The range of beers is good.

Come and join us!

Chui
14-09-11, 05:05 PM
Ok, all confirmed as 23 Oct 12.00 - 17.00........and they're still doing Banana Bread Beer  - think I'll come along on the bicycle ;)

Yep, I've had a pm from a member who wishes to have a table to show some of his knives - judging by his recent posts, he has some utter beauts.

As much as guests are welcome we just need to ensure numbers/who/their interest.

ShortNCuddlyAm will be coming along with me and she is planning on bringing along some of her handmade silver & glass jewellery for folks to have a look at / purchase. She's currently also working on designs for some "bushcrafty" pendants in silver for us blokes too (made using PMC clay so they'll be pretty much "Fine Silver" (99.99% pure silver) rather than Sterling silver (92.5% pure), however they won't be hallmarked due to the hassle and cost of getting stuff hallmarked, and as long as a silver item is below 7.78g in weight there's no requirement for it to be hallmarked anyway).

I'm counting down to the meetup excitedly, this is gonna be a good'un!

I'll bring our folding table with me as well if I remember - something tells me we're going to need as many tables up there as we can get! :)

No worries, I'm gonna bring my new holiday locker for the raffle, it basically a metal version of a buck 110 which has seen some veg cutting action and lots of limes for Gin and tonics! Surprisingly good for a holiday pick up at about 7 euros!

Really looking forward to the meet sounds like it's coming together very nicely

I'll be bringing a Wilkinson Sword/Fiskars camp axe for the Raffle hopfully and maybe a Cold Steel Finn Bear if I ever finish covexing it.

And could you guys bring along your Cheap Chinese blades too? I know you have them!

I've only been once befor but I can easily see this little meet up growing into something bigger in the next few years. Once it gets a good following and a few of the big custom makers in regular attendence I can see it becoming a small trade fair of sorts.

You can show off your goodies and drawer queens while chatting with a maker about a your next commision, or watching a pro like LongStrider do a short class of sharpening or guys like Essexman showing off their knots ect ect

The perfect afternoon out if you ask me.

Well done and thanks to Chui and TnHD and anyone else involved behind the scenes for making this happen.

Supa

PS, Perhaps an A4 flyer with the venue's details and a short blurb that people can print off will come in handy for those traveling in on public transport? I screenshot it on my iPod but you can never be too sure with todays coppers.

Thanks Supa mate, and thanks to Chui for his pub wrangling skills and to Chui and Nico for helping get LSECCA moving in the first place.

I think we're going to outgrow the Dukes Head pretty soon!

Good Idea re the flyer - should give some peace of mind. I shall knock up a flyer for it and pop it online with a download link.

I think we just need to be a bit more economical with the space we have already. Alot of collectionss were taking up a entire table when they could have been squeezed onto half with ease. And it might we worth have one table left bare for people like LongStrider and Essexman to work on and something to run the Raffle from.

Chui

Yep, I think you have a point here.........however, we have to be careful that we maintain a consistent following and that we choose venues carefully, often season related.

Maybe a lesson learnt to date is that summer can be an iffy time as people are often on hols and kidiwinks need looking after.

Above all, both Dave and I are somewhat surprised that there is not more attendance/enthusiasm given we are London/Home Counties. But like all new things, people need the confidence that it is a positive and healthy growing gathering.

We must not forget the contribution made by Nico (Monsieur) who is juggling with a job away from home and a rapidly growing family.

Let us burst at the seems in The Dukes Head, and if it is time to move on, we will look for somewhere with more space and equally good waitresses ;), sorry, I meant beer and food.........

Good idea re the flyer - if that gives people the extra confidence they may possibly wish for, other than this thread, brilliant, let's do it.

We are all very much looking forward to this meet, it's going to be a great crack........:D

Ah yes my iPad is now stuck in the recovery mode and the computer won't recognise it... Grr!

Yup. Same here for my iPad.

Got my iPhone back working, but it lost ALL my synch settings so tried to restore every app to it, even ones I've deleted from it in the past, plus ALL my music library... and then promptly fell over. And despite iTunes not having "sync this iPhone over WiFi" ticked, the iPhone insists on synching over WiFi which means it runs like an absolutely slow thing that's been frozen to just above 0 Kelvin... I eventually managed to get back to only the Apps I wanted on it, and have told it NOT to synch any music or books to it at all so at least the synch finishes quickly.

The iOS 5 release is turning into a potential PR nightmare for apple!

Looks great, dave , good work! Maybe it could be put in the place of a few of these ever growing adverts in people's posts ? Not criticising the adverts, I understand they are important for improving the site and it's future ventures just think it could be a good opportunity to get some exposure, imagine if someone like heinnie had an events page that we could sent such quality flyers to? Food for thought!

Anyway I'm on my last full day in Cyprus today , just getting some shelter from the sun and checking my favourite place on the web out, took some rather cr£ap photos yesterday on my iPad of both my Edc out here and the cheapy knife I bought out here to do all of my cooking with..... A job ...to be fair that this 7 euro knife has well and truly surprised me at. Along with the cooking it's also been used to smash ice up for drinks, only had one ice cube mould so resorted freezing water bottles and as I said smashing the ice up for the copious gin and tonics, the cheap knife has held it's own despite the cutting and handle smashes it has put up with. It needs a good sharpen now and I'll give it a once over with some micro mesh before placing it in the raffle,

Here are some photos, if anyone a bit technically minded wants to embed them please do with my thanks

Ps the lockers were room bound, only carried the multi tool when we went out on a jeep safari , you never know ! And I'm an old boy scout !

Also , found a praying mantis on our seating area, as I said the photos are not the best as they were done with my iPad

Sorry for the hijack, and if it continues I'll move all this into a seperate thread, but my 3GS has been a PITA since late last night. Today it lost the ability to connect to the internet via a decent phone signal, it's crashing out of apps, and just generally being moody.

I can be there from 10:30am onwards, no idea when pub will open to let us in to set the room up. But I guess there are worser ways to spend a sunday morning than a quiet walk along the Thames.

And now we're getting the bigger names perhaps we'll be able to persuade a few more londoners that its actualy worth getting up at 10am on a Sunday and draggin their arses over to putney for a meet! Perhaps a quick shout out into the Commons for those who don't pay attention to the meet up forums?

Longstrider may like rum & coke, but he doesn't drink it in girls measures!

Rum & coke, the longstrider way... (as observed at JackJacks and LSECCA campouts)

Drink 1/3 of a 2 litre bottle of diet coke
Fill bottle back up to the top with rum
Gently invert to mix
Drink while sitting around campfire.
Repeat until time to stagger to tent.

P.S. Got the second table en route home from work? It's big!

Potentially 25 people!

This is going to be a damn good gathering, but considering the number of BB members in London and surrounding areas, like Chui said earlier, I'm still surprised it's not more!

P.S. I will bring FAK as usual, but I fully intend NOT cutting myself this time!

Had a look at transport options to get down for this as I have vowed never to drive in London :surrender: but the train would cost us nearly £100, National Express coach is looking at about £60 plus we'd still have to get from Westminster so looks like a no go i'm afraid which is a shame as we'd really like to meet up with you mad bunch again

TallNHairyDave

I think if we end up inundated with raffle prizes, Chui and I need to work out whether it would make sense to start building up a "raffle prize collection" that comes to meets and only raffling off a few items per meet so people don't have to bring something to every meetup... (and making it more like a raffle than our first one!)

Assuming of course that would be ok for everyone?

We could have a sticky thread of what's in the raffle box, and put out a call for donations when it starts to run low.

Yup, what Essexman said, as long as it's relevant to BB it's good! We've had paracord bits, knives, tools, handle materials, handmade jewellery, knife making kits and sundry other bits. (Handmade jewellery was from Am, and it was decided that it was relevant because it's always handy to have something to placate the Mrs when a new knife arrives )

Chui is talking with the pub about bringing cake - we would like to have a cake in honour of Grace's birthday but we don't want to step on the pub's toes by bringing in our own food... If that's OK with the pub then there will be cake (and maybe biltong & droewors to share too)

If you're going via Occupy London thing, I would suggest that you don't have ANY blades other than UK Legal EDC.

Even then, it'd probably be safest not to in case the police consider you to be a protester and decide to stop and search.... "what are you doing carrying a knife at a demonstration sonny?"...

Wouldn't want to miss the meetup because of having to spend time arguing S.139 of CJA 1988 with a police officer in riot gear or custody sargeant!

But that is a little bit paranoid I suppose....

I didnt explain myself. I'll be leaving the stuff in the car when I go down there and grabbing it out of the car when I make my way to the Pub. I won't even be carrying a knife when I go down there because I'm not the most subtle looking guy.

It's a shame I can't exercise my right to carry, and conform to the law while doing so, due to the threat of unlawful or mistaken arrest by a police officer who doesn't understand the law. But thats another thread entirely.

All my blades bar my EDC will be in a zippered case with a cable tie thru the zips so it can't be opened. I should be fine with that plus one of daves Flyers.

SPECIAL NEWS!

I had been talking to Antony at flashaholics about organising a passaround of a new-to-the-market torch, but we didn't want to run the risk of it getting "stuck", and he then said that he'd be happy to donate one to be raffled off for charity if I was to review it first. I told him about the LSECCA meeting this weekend and....

Antony at Flashaholics (http://www.flashaholics.co.uk/) is donating a NiteCore TM11 "Tiny Monster" (http://www.flashaholics.co.uk/nitecore/nitecore-tm11.html) 2000 lumens torch (complete with 8xCR123 batteries to run it on) to us to raffle off for charity at this meetup.

For those who don't know what one is, here's a video review of it... it's the small one about the size of a can of coke.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=24VSvRrN2hw

He is sending me the torch along with 8 x CR123 batteries and would like a review of it posted, but then we can raffle it for charity on Sunday, he has just got back to me and said that he would like us to make the donation to Save The Children (http://www.savethechildren.org.uk).

Ideally we want to raise at least the torch selling price, so depending on number tickets sold we'll be looking at £15 each if we only sell 16 tickets (We can drop the ticket price but at £10 each if we can guarantee 23 tickets, or £5 each if we guarantee at least 46).... but, this is your chance to win an incredibly powerful, surprisingly small torch valued at £226.95 (excluding postage and the included batteries) and make a donation to a worthwhile charity at the same time.

I will do a "show of hands" on Sunday before raffling this off and the per ticket price will be decided at that point.... If at least 23 folks hold their hands up (or we get a guaranteed minimum of 23 tickets sold), then it'll be £10 a ticket, if we can guarantee 46 tickets sold, it'll be £5 a ticket.

This is seperate to our usual "room hire" raffle.

(Tony's recommendation is that the winner then purchase 4 x 18650 batteries and a charger to run the torch on in the long term as the performance is better, and while the initial outlay for batteries and charger is more expensive it will be cheaper in the long term to run it on 18650 rechargeable cells than CR123 batteries!)

So, a huge thank you to Tony for initially donating the torch for review and then saying that it should be raffled off for charity.

The torch will be on display during the meetup so folks can have a look at it.

I couldn't believe it when he said he'd be donate it for charity raffle! What a gentleman.

I will do a "show of hands" on Sunday before raffling this off. If at least 23 hold their hands up (or we get a guaranteed minimum of 23 tickets sold), then it'll be £10 a ticket. (Tony has now confirmed that his chosen charity is Save the Children (http://www.savethechildren.org.uk))

We might limit the number of tickets per person to give everyone a fair chance, but that's depending on how many folks want tickets.

Chui
19-10-11, 03:39 PM
Utterly brilliant, Dave - well done matey!

If people see this as a stonkingly worthwhile charity raffle - with the chance of winning a torch to spot Pluto with - I'm sure we'll reach target and beyond :)

With LSECCA gaining this kind of momentum, maybe we should ask around if people are up for a Christmas meet............?

TallNHairyDave
19-10-11, 03:47 PM
I have had a PM asking about "postal bids" for the raffle from a chap who can't make it to the meetup.

Chui and I have discussed this and as it was donated for us to raffle at the LSECCA meetup by Antony, we've decided "no postal bids"... if you want a chance to win it, come to the pub on Sunday! Sorry folks.

Like Chui said, look at this as a donation to a worthy charity with a chance to win one hell of a torch!

20-10-11, 12:03 PM
my point wasn't that it has to be raffled here, or that a thread about it is needed. i just thought that if someone, by pm to Dave or Chui, would like to send £X for a ticket before the meet, then a ticket will be entered at the meet on their behalf - more money for the kids, more people get a chance to win. it's not a BB raffle, it's a raffle at a meet that people have bought a ticket for in advance.
but ultimately, nothing to do with me as i can't attend, but it just seems to me that a generous offer is not being taken full advantage of for the sake of pedantics

Chui
20-10-11, 01:55 PM
You make a valid point.

Dave was offered the torch as a raffle for the LSECCA event, and in doing so, Anthony said he wanted the cost covered by the raffle – all down to the relationship between Dave & Anthony

Yes, it is a very generous offer, and a very wonderful toy.

I agree, if we opened it up to BB members we could hopefully raise more money............but we are not into that on BB, as has been discussed, and declared, at length before. There's also the fact that Dave would need to spend his time administering the raffle itself……all before Sunday.

Therefore, and I am sorry if it causes upset, it has been decided to keep the raffle to within the bounds of the pub-meet.

Some of the members coming to the pub-meet do not have a substantial income, and it is perhaps a bonus for them, should they wish to partake in the charity raffle, that their efforts for attending are rewarded by better than normal odds of winning something fairly special.

Just in the process of knocking up a simple paracord one for myself with some way to carry my little Kiridashi behind it. It'd not going well but I'll figure it out.

And I think your quite right to keep it within the Pub Meet. At least next time something like this happens it will encourage people to get up off thier arses and get down there, no offence intented to those who can't make it of course.

It's just a kick in the face to all those who got this thing arranged and are paying for it out of thier own pocket before hand to then have people show no intrest at all of turning up. Because if you don't support things like this in thier infantcy then they're just gonna die off and then we all lose.

Some of the members coming to the pub-meet do not have a substantial income, and it is perhaps a bonus for them, should they wish to partake in the charity raffle, that their efforts for attending are rewarded by better than normal odds of winning something fairly special.

no upset caused Chui - but if it was LSeCCA only, maybe Dave shouldn't have raised hopes buy posting about the raffle in a non- LSECCA thread for everyone to see?

and in terms of charities, last time i looked HFH did quite well out of this site, so how BB can be declared 'not into that sort of thing' i find a bit odd, and a bit distressing tbh. but that's another thread.
to all attending, have fun :D

The agreement with Antony was to raffle it at the LSECCA meetup.

I posted about it being raffled at the pubmeet to drum up further last minute interest / attendees for the meet as we want lsecca pub meets to be well attended and vibrant meetups. Doing so in the thread about the tm11 was the logical place.

You'll note in my post there I did not say anything about making tickets available to non attendees. I just announced that it would be raffled at the pubmeet.

Finally, by running the raffle in person at an LSECCA gathering and not running it through BB other than to announce that it will happen at the pubmeet, Chui and I believe that we are in compliance with the forum rule banning using bb to fundraise for charities.

Nothing sinister or distressing. I think Chui was referring to the forum rules:

http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?710-Forum-RULES-amp-GUIDELINES

In particular this:
Charity Fund-raising:
It has always been our opinion that there are so many means and ways for people to raise money for charitable causes, that there is room for somewhere that does not allow it. We understand that there are very many worthy causes, but equally, there are very many ways of raising money. Britishblades does not need to be part of a fund raising portfolio or awareness campaign for any charity and we believe that the majority of our membership value having somewhere that is free from those pressures. We polled our community and 83.48% agreed that they did not want to see charity fund-raising on our forums. To that end, it is completely forbidden to run any kind of auction, sponsorship, raffle or any other kind of charity promotion on our forums, either for money or simply to raise awareness. To repeat ....all forms of charity promotion are prohibited, no matter how worthy the cause. The only exceptions to this are that you may carry a single, unformatted, plain text link in your signature to a charitable website or promotion of your choice and you may also use the classifieds to sell items for charity, providing they carry a fixed price and follow the normal formatting rules for adverts.

Cheers!

It's OK gorilla mate. No upset on my side, and I'm really sorry if I by announcing that we'd raffle it a the meetup (to try to get more people to come to the pub) raised hopes of taking part in the raffle for folks who can't make it to the meetup.

If BB allowed charity fundraising on the forum, I'm sure we'd have thrown it open to everyone (as long as that was OK with Antony and short notice + admin by me be damned) and done the draw at LSECCA perhaps with cheaper tickets for people who could attend the pubmeet as a draw to get attendees.
