View Full Version : London CHRISTMAS pub-meet - PICS ADDED
Picking up from our very early thoughts re calendar of events for LSECCA (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?122998-LSECCA-2011-calendar-of-events-%28meets-outings-camping-bushcraft-w-e....%29) I have spoken with our hosts from yesterday at The Dukes Head.
Sunday 11th December from 12noon to 5pm.
I will be able to post likely Christmas buffet / meal options later today..........
When asking around yesterday, there seemed a positive response, any idea if any of you would be up for it...........?
:cuttree: :cuttree: :cuttree: :cuttree: :cuttree: :cuttree:
........it would be great to see more members - and Mods - from further afield joining us
For a tenner a head, we could go for this:
Brie & Cranberry Parcel
Duck and Hoi Sin Spring Rolls
Vegetarian Dim Sum
Canapé selection of:
Brussels Pate & Cranberry
Avocado & Prawn
Pepper Salsa & Goats Cheese
Chocolate Brownie Bites

That grub option sounds good to me Chui as it would let us run it as a normal meetup... unless folks would prefer to do it as a sit down scoff? (which would cost more obviously)
I'd be more than happy with a normal meet with the food on top. I'm not much of a person for sit down meals and I'm also a bloody fussy eater to boot. So I'm in for a normalish meet but its a no go for a sit down meal for me.
Thanks for getting on the ball so quick too Chui and Dave. Whatever happens we should get Grace to come along with an even more inappropriate knife to cut something with, in a corset too of course.

The £10 a head option for a normal ish meet with canapés and nibbles sounds like a winner to me. :D

Common?
Perhaps if the rest of us have the civilised sit down meal Supa can go for the £10 eat all you want buffet. He can curl up in the rushes with the dogs afterwards and, if he's lucky, we'll throw him bones and pheasant carcases.

The pub only let us have the private upstairs room from 12:00 until 17:00.
That said, we can always decamp downstairs to the bar afterwards for drinks and Christmas cheer - we just can't have knives out on show.
- just a thought though, would people be happy/happier with a 5 till chuckin' out time ..............?
Yep!
How'd the camp out go?
I'm sitting in a bar in Segovia to write this and, much as I like camping, I don't envy you.
Hic!
Cheers!

Great news - we will be joined for sure, just confirmed, by Russell White from Sheffield :)
Russell will be bringing along a few of his own knives together with a selection from his work.
A big thank you to Russell for making the effort to come down............we just have to trust there are no unusual leaves or snowflakes on the railway tracks that day
Take a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSKrH3NC_eA

In all seriousness he's a great lad and very knowledgeable on the working of folding knives! He should be he's made literally tens of thousands! :)

Close to 300 miles last weekend for a wee gab and some vodka round a campfire was enough of a trek for me lol
I'll get to a London do someday but I'd have to fly down rather than drive I reckon!

Is this do in the afternoon or evening now. Has it been decided.......?
Cheers,

Defo 12-5pm - sorry, should have said earlier, but with Russell having confirmed he can join us all, the only time he can do it is an afternoon bash.
Would be just great if Owen could come along too, but he teaches I believe.

Must admit that suits me, although it is a shame Owen can't make it. Still it'll be a treat to have Russell along. Poor bloke must be geeting nervous I reckon, what with being given star billing......name in banner headlines 'an all!!
Looking forward to it!

How many more individual Sheffield knifemakers are there left producing quality custom folders........? :)
If we ever manage to get a Knifemakers Guild going in UK...........Russell is one of the guys I'd like to see on it one day.

Couldn't agree more!
Setting a bit of a precedent though Chui. That's two Sheffield knifemakers in consecutive meetings. Who's gonna be next?

- good question, Trevor.
We would really like to have Owen Bush along..........there's an utter prime candidate for the Guild ;)
But, not only does he produce amazing stuff, he gives a great deal back to the knifemaking/bladesmith community - lunch on me, if you ever manage it along, Owen
Our wonderful team at Heinnie Haynes have given us a generous selection of sharps to raffle at the Christmas bash and their chosen benefactor will be Help for Heroes.

That would be too cruel! The presence of our 3 year old created this depraved, twisted creature in the first place. God knows what she'd do to waifs.

We have a good number coming along - but it's Christmas - the more, definitely the merrier :D

Come on folks! London & South East is a big region!
Surely there must be some more who fancy joining us for some festive scoff, a chance to meet Russell, the raffle for HfH, and an all round damn good time?
Anyone?

Apologies all...........we have missed out on the Christmas Buffet.
However, we do have their full menu to choose from still, which includes Christmas fayre.
My fault entirely because they needed more notice for the buffet than I realised :(

I think a fine would be more appropriate. I'll review your knife collection and see what gets confiscated.

No problem. I think I know where to look for you - your knives anyway. It is probably a pointless (hah!) exercise anyway. I doubt that there is anything worth confiscating in that pile of tat you've accumulated. It is a matter of principle though....

Looks like Am and I might not be making it now as we're both feeling pretty damn rough and spent most of today collapsed on the bed lacking energy to do anything else.
We'll see how we feel in the morning, but if we aren't up to it, have a great time folks :)
- really hope you're both feeling much better in t'morning........the meet will not be the same without you

Get well soon Dava and Am,
Have a great day everyone.
Now Chui, the lack of buffet, I can't understand aftrer all the times you've arrranged that room that you managed to mess it up, really? I think you should be made to work behind the bar all afternoon and stay late and help clear up with young whats her name. :)

Sarah cannot do today, instead, if you recall seeing her...........we have young and delectable Stephanie
So, yeah, happily :D :ninja:

Bad luck guys. I hope you both get over it soon. The meet won't be the same without you :(

We really hope you can make it. I'm dragging my son and other half along to this and I know that at least one of them wants to see the TAHD toys I've talked so much about.
I've always found that a beer (or even better a hot toddy) helps flu like nothing else. Well, except 2 beers!

I may be a few mins late, sorting out some work issues........:(
I have had a message from Russell to say that regretfully, he will be unable to make it today, as he has major computer problems and needs to resolve it.
Hope you get it all sorted, LSECCA looks forward to your visit another time

Raffle covered the room hire and raised £100 for Help For Heroes for which Chui is sorting out the donation.
Thank you everyone for taking part and to everyone who donated something and especially to the crew at HH and smokepole for their very generous donations :D
Thanks to Chui for organising the room hire again, although we had to restrain Huon from claiming the forfeit he had demanded from Chui's collection.... Fortunately Pete brought a bullwhip with him so that helped

Thanks to Chui for organising the room hire again..........
- this is very easy and straightforward since I've got to know some of the staff at The Duke
What takes time is pm'ing people behind the scenes, and, chasing up who is / who isn't coming.
I guess, given the time of year, people are busy with Christmas and it is also cough/cold/flue time.
Dave and I have said it before, but it would be great, given the London/Home Counties catchment area if more people could make the effort - because, as those who do come along would say, the members are a truly fun/genuine set and there's much to learn and share on each pubmeet.
I'd welcome peoples' thoughts and views - would it be better in November or maybe a meet in mid-Jan to chase away the New Year blues............??
A very big thanks to all who came and participated.
:)
ps. Essexman - you and Ethan missed out, pal. Big time :D

Well I had a very nice time and it was an inspiration spending time with like minded people.
It's not often you meet so many nice people in a single space and I look forward to the next one.
I think January would be a fantastic time of year to have another one of these as I tend to find people do indeed feel a bit blue and would encourage anyone thinking about it to come along.
One thing I will say Chui is that you have photographed me from the wrong side and exposed my week chin..
Great to meet you all chaps.

Flying would be a bitch, as would accommodation :(
And if wanted to bring knives I'd need to pay for hold luggage! Mmmmm leave it with me ;)
Just a thought I would find it difficult to make the meet on a weekend due to being busy with the kids, but could timetable a midweek meet and combine a business trip.
Cheers

Highlights of things on show for me were Mr Doyle's stunning work, and Richard's awesome collection of Alan Wood knives and Chris Reeves Sebenzas.
But the high point for me above all else was meeting up with everyone who made it... As ever the atmosphere was great and the camaraderie was fabulous. :)

London stansted is just 20mins up the M11 from us, or London Southend is approx 1 hour in the car, and near work. Makes me laugh that they put "London" in front of the airports name.

There was a terrific selction of sharps to fondle and drool over as well as superb company.
Thanks all, especially to Chui and Dave for organising the room, raffle etc. Can't wait for the next one and I encourage anybody within range to make the effort next time.
Cheers,

Another great meet-up, once again many thanks to Tall 'n Hairy and Chui for being on the case for all the logistic type stuff, and thanks to everyone else for coming along and sharing tips and advice... some familiar faces and some new ones, most impressed with Mr. Doyle's blades, I always come away from these meetings with a head buzzing with ideas, advice and inspiration... although the ale (s) may have something to do with that ;)
I'd better get on and make some more blades, can't keep bringing the same ones!
