View Full Version : Storing Leather Question

I've done a search and not found anything on this. I have some pieces of veg tan leather that I want to put away for a while.
Is there a 'good' way to store leather and is there anything to avoid? I was thinking of storing it in layers, with some kind of tissue paper between the layers, then putting the whole lot in a tough, open plastic bag and sticking it in a cupboard.

Wrap in brown paper, no plastic - it needs to breathe; keep it out of the light, cool but not cold.
If you're using tissue, be sure it is acid-free.
Mine lives in the wardrobe. This elicits some strange responses if I incautiously say something along the lines of "you should see how much leather I have in my wardrobe..."

Another tip, if you're cramped for space, don't fold it, roll it into a tube. The cardboard tube from rolls of carpet makes a good storage thingy

If you have the room for it, then hanging leather up is best in a dry cool location. It also makes it easier to manage it when you do get round to using it as you dont end up fighting the curls!
Alternately find somewhere to lay it flat. MJ has the right sort of idea as under the bed (not necessarily the mattress!) is generally just the right sort of place :)
As a point of interest, if you leave veg tan in sunlight, it eventually darkens in colour quite considerably. I dont know how this affects the basic shades of colour you would get when dying it though.
