Hi everyone,

I found a old axe in a box of old tools left on the roadside of my neighbour during a council bulk clean up.

Aside from the axe, there were lots of other old tools and other hatchets etc that I will need to
indentify in the coming weeks.

This axe in particular is stamped Brades Co with the number 236 beneath the company name. It is like a bill hook but has a fitted handle that is similar in size and length to a normal axe handle. The handle
is original. Although sharp in rusty the head and handle is in good condition.

Can anyone identify what this axe was designed for where was it made and is it collectable.

Many thanks

Gordon

Sounds like a standard long handled brush hook. Brades was and old English hand tool maker that made very good tools. They are good tools to have for clearing brush and I usually get them at boot sales for £10-15. Sounds like a lucky find for you. If you plan to sell them then just put them on evil bay.

Sounds like a Yorkshire pattern billhook.I've seen them sell for over £40...

If it has single cutting edge it is a type of slasher - there were many regional patterns. If it has a straight blade at the back it will probably be a Yorkshire pattern... Send me your e-mail in PM and I'll send you some copies of pages from a Brades catalogue - would post on the forum if I knew how to do so...
