How comes I'm not on the list?

After all the Pakeha & Puha jokes, I'm just a little concerned that I may have been transferred to the menu.

I've been booking my 2012 leave this morning and have found out that 27th May is not the Spring Bank Holiday. A quick google found this:

In 2012, there will be a special holiday on Tuesday, 5 June, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Jubilee_of_Elizabeth_II). Therefore, to make it a four-day weekend, the Spring Bank Holiday that would usually occur at the end of May will be pushed back to Monday, 4 June 2012.

Am I the only fool that didn't know?????

Errrrr........looks like you have been John mate.

Never mind, arrange your hols accordingly. Not attending is just NOT an option for you I'm afraid.

I sent the original response from my new android phone....ye gods I want my old Nokia back!!! The supplied software keyboard is naff, somebody please tell me there's a better alternative I can download, at least one that's got the comma and fullstop on the same screen as the letters.

I'm pretty sure I went down every lane surrounding one farm because there were people standing around watching this car being driven down really tight -lanes would be an overstatement- largely tarmac tracks.

Best bet look at the version on your computer screen, take a map and set Charing as a way point on your handset

Finally caught up with the site owner. All is cleared :D Costs are unfortunatly different though. He is askng for £10 per night per pitch. Some will save from that but soloists suffer a bit. Sorry i couldnt get the discount we got last year.

On top of that will be costs for the portaloo which still have to be finalsied.

Frankly, at £10/night per pitch, I am ok with that.........but some who were hoping for a couple o' nights may find that a bit more than they hoped. Any chance of £10 first night and £5 for the second...........? Or, £15 for a two-night pitch..?

Guess the 'loo will work out at around a fiver/head as before if we have the numbers as indicated.

We could always have a raffle, and I reckon the income would cover the 'loo........?

Just about to book trains, from the map Pluckley looks to be the closest.
What times are most people arriving?
Also is there any chance that I can give someone who's driving some money to get my share of water, charcoal and firewood? It'll save me carrying it all on public transport and then the walk from the station

Cheers,
Tom

bardster
04-05-12, 09:41 AM
Wouldnt't worry about water and firewood, plenty on site. Well I shall be bringing the water but you know what i mean ;) Pluckley is indeed closest station, give us a shout when your close and i'll come pick you up from the station.

Ah excellent news, I'll aim for late morning 11ish if that sounds about right. Cheers for the lift offer too that would be ace. Ooo with a lift from the station I could make a trip to Smithfield in the morning, can never have enough meat :D
Is cash on the day ok, or would you prefer in advance via PayPal etc?

Judging by the sort of meat coming from roestalker and Fluffy (more pork please: it was fab!) I wouldn't bother with more meat. Corn on the cob could be nice, I'll see if I can get some.

Wigs, you need to pester Huon until he prepares some foil-wrapped veg with herbs and seasoning, ready to cook! :D

Chui
04-05-12, 05:47 PM
Yep, good idea Marc - as much as I can eat meat till it comes out m' ears, a balance of veggies like we had before would be good.

I'll ask 'im.........

burgers are great, its important to have food while you are waiting for other food to cook.

Do you have to have to stay in a tent as I have a camper van?
Or is that not really in the spirit of things.

I seem to remember rather a lot of wasted meat at previous events because people were incredibly generous and bought far more than they could eat. The thing is I really look forward to the venison haunch and pork joints and am happy to contribute towards their costs but as for burgers/sausages etc etc that I want to "snack" on before the main event, I am happy to bring my own. I'm not saying I won't bring a few extras that can go into a communal larder but my concern is the waste and if we all simply bring what we want plus a bit extra there would be very little.

tburgess
05-05-12, 09:20 AM
Yes, that's what I was thinking of John. There was a bit of overkill on the meat last time. I was thinking maybe I'd bring a pile of tomatoes and salady stuff to go with it this time.

That sounds good Trevor. Veggie kebabs or something like Huon's veggie parcels will go down a treat and balance the excessive intake of meat nicely.

It's two bedrooms off a centre room so should be fine.

The more people helping will speed it up though.

Well, looks like I'm taking the Friday and Monday too. It's biting into my remaining holiday a bit, but it's Laras' birthday w/e. Will be up Fri pm, or Sat lunch, depending on whether she insists on a birthday supper out or is happy to eat there.

I suspect it's up to me to surprise her with a meal out. However being thrown in the car with a cheese and onion sandwich and an opened bottle of red is also a surprise meal. Yes?

If it's one of those *^%*++^£-ers that you have to fill with petrol and then pump up, don't ask for my help ;) The last one I pumped up (and I mean the last) split, spayed juice all over and then turned into a fireball. If the forecast is really awful, like rain throughout, that may well influence my decision to book the 2 days holiday.

Reason I'm typing this at this time of night is 'cos there's such a storm blowing outside it's woken me up ;)

slightly OT, but, i have 3 cast iron fry pans, desparatly in need of a burn and season, any one done this before and would the 'moderate' fire we are going to have be suitable for this?

Saint-Just
14-05-12, 06:53 PM
It would, but curing a pan takes a while and it would be better if you started at home.
Make sure the pan is rust-free, using wire wool as needed.

Pour a little vegetable oil, coat the pan as you heat it until the oil starts to smoke.
Stop the heat, let it cool down, wipe thoroughly with kitchen roll. repeat the following day. Do not wash, just wipe. And again.

The more you do it, the better the pan will be.

we had them quite well seasoned but they seemed to 'go off' after some time. one was ruined by improper use by someone who didnt know how to cook with one.

have tried reseasoning but to date hasnt worked well.

TB_London
14-05-12, 08:14 PM
Best way i have found to season is with lard, rather than oil which unless you get hot enough will form a gummy coating rather than a nice seasoning.
First i'd make sure it was clean with wire wool as needed to make sure the new seasoning has a good base to adhere to. Then put the oven on to pre heat the oven to it's hottest temp heat. Put an even layer of lard in the pan and on the hob heat up to smoking point. Then I pour it out into a bowl and carefully use a wad of kitchen towel to coat the rest of the pan, you need to be very careful doing this, i have silicon oven mits so they are impermeable to the hot fat and heat proof to grip the pan, if you just have normal oven gloves be very careful. I then put the pan in the oven up side down (Foil in the bottom of the oven stops a lot of mess). After 30 minutes check progress, and give another wipe around with the lard and half hour if needs be. Then leave to cool in the oven. The first thing i'll cook in it would be some sliced onions. The slight acidity will clean off any residue and seems to help set the seasoning.

If you're going to do it over the fire, i'd wait for it to be just glowing embers and set it up on a support. If directly in the fire it'll get very sooty, and if amongst the embers it's likely to be too hot and burn the seasoning off.

We'll probably now only be coming for the day on Saturday, sans tent as I have just had a massive flare up of sciatica which ended up with me being kept in overnight at the hospital hopped up to the eyeballs on painkillers.

I tried to get to A&E under my own steam when the pain got too bad, but couldn't get into the car fully or back out again... It took the application of Entonox and two of LAS' finest to get me out of the car! Quite amusing with hindsight, but seriously NOT fun at the time!

I've been told to keep it extra careful for at least a couple of weeks while my back heals, have been referred for physiotherapy and am on a nice mix of STRONG painkillers, all of which kind of precludes sleeping in a tent - even on my exped synmat dlx. :(

Fourtunately the painkillers have reduced it to the feeling of "having been trampled in a rugby scrum then kicked in the nuts a couple of days ago" and while I still have the numbness, pins & needles etc in my right leg that goes with the trapped nerve I can at least stand, sit and walk without wanting to scream obscenities!

It's been pretty good thanks Dave. My last keyhole op was 6 or 7 years ago and I've had the odd flare-up since which usually last between a couple of days and a week but they have been painful rather than debilitating. I'm a lot more sensible about what I do now but you have to live and that means you sometimes have to do things that can set it off again.

The only advice I will give you is to cut down on the painkillers as soon as you can. The problem is because they mask the pain you end up doing more than you should which can make the problem worse and lengthen the recovery time.....

Anyway, take it easy and I look forward to seeing you and Am again soon.

So still no camping for me this coming weekend, but Am and I will be along on Saturday morning for plenty of good socialising, plinking (we'll bring the CO2 revolver and CO2 1911) and food :)

We'll bring along a big pot of Am's lovely home made ratatouille to share (with luck folks will remember that from the first LSECCA BBQ - it went down very well!)

I was thinking along the same lines, but the steaks will be no better or worse from either animal. I think the young murderist shall go into the butcher and be turned into all the good stuff, and the 6 pointer can come along to Bardsters in it's just shot state so that i can show how to take off the head and feet, and then have a skinning session. I was hoping to drop by on a similar basis if that is OK?

Is there a sort of timetable for Saturday, I'd love to see some cutting and don't want to miss out by turning up too late.

There was mention of some possible shooting. How far does the permission go? I might be able to bring some of the following if appropriate; .22lr semi-auto rifle, air rifle, air pistol, shotgun, a bow or two, a crossbow.

Looking forward to tomorrow (well later today now).

No ratatouille, sorry - Am and I had today booked off work, but we both ended up having to work in the mornings. Got home, started sorting stuff out and both crashed out on the sofa for a bit.... Clean forgot to do the ratatouille so I dashed round sainsburys late and have got loads of mini sausage rolls, mini cheese & onion rolls, mini scotch eggs, assorted crisps and a couple of their deli counter's half way decent saucisson-sec.

So that's some snacks sorted for sharing in between burgers, sausages and venison!

P.s. have camera, steadicam handle and headcam as well for filming the cutting comp. Will bring iPad and camera card reader for it to offload the raw videos if folks want to watch playback :)

P.p.s knives, axe, CO2 pistols, air rifle also packed and ready :)

I had an absolutely cracking day today. :) (quite literally!)

Great to see everyone and the skinning / butchery demo was fascinating, thanks Roestalker! Very educational! (I got a fair amount of video of it and some photos, but the vids will need editing down to a reasonable length before uploading!)

There was air pistol plinking, air rifle shooting, knife throwing and archery going on at various points throughout the day... And when it got too hot mid afternoon, we all either retired to tents or gathered in the barn.

Thanks to Roestalker for the deer & Fluffy's shooting skill for bagging it! It was delicious! :D Thanks to everyone else who brought grub - the wild boar sausages were a very close second to the venison in deliciousness! And the coffee walnut cake was absolutely superb... Shame that neither Grace nor a suitably enormous knife were available to slice it! ;)

Thanks again to Roestalker for bringing your rifle along - what a superb piece of engineering that is! And the scope on top of it was equally impressive! I'm just waiting for the embarrassing photo of me to get posted as I rolled to my side away from the rifle prior to getting up... I paused to remark on just how impressed I was with it and some sod snapped a photo, making me look like I was posing "calendar girl" style alongside it!

Big thanks as usual to Paul for his hospitality and arranging the amenities.

Finally thanks to Fluffy for making my back go "crunch-pop-pop-pop" - it hurt like hell when it did, but suddenly I found that the pain that I was in before his ministrations was very greatly reduced!

Thanks again to Paul for his hospitality.

A wonderful time was had by the Saint-Justs, despite a fairly bad start as one of the 2 cars going to the meet broke down in a dangerous place, and we had to get 999 involved before the AA could move in.
BTW, is there a place we can send a "thank you" message to the very helpful PC, who did not bat an eyelid when the AA told him they would be there "within an hour"?
In the end I pushed the car out of harm's way under the protection of his car, not wanting to mobilise an essential service for the convenience of a delayed recovery vehicle, but I felt really embarrassed at having to ask him to come here in the first place.

Nick's meat was excellent, as was the company and it was good to catch up with friends from last meet, and get to know new ones. Even Djinn found new friends.

A special "thank you" also to John for the patience he's shown to my 6 1/2 yo tyrant :D

the excellent deer skinning and butchery demo followed by tasters of raw venison.

thanks to dave for a go of that tangliofolio, been dying to have a go of that one.

ended up doing some more plinking instead of cutting, but was so pleased to have fixed my gun in time for the weekend.

it was really nice to re-aquaint with old friends and also to meet some new friends as well.:)

on the social front, its so great to chill with a few beers and stuff as the evening turns into night, and whats more we got to do that for two nights in a row.

big, big thanks for the haunch of venison, which is to start its journey into biltong this evening :D although it does seem part air cured already.

What an absolutely fantastic weekend, it was great to see some old friends and also to make some new ones....these events just get better and better.

Thanks has to go to Bardster for organising it all and also for arranging the weather. :)

Thanks to Nick and fluffy for supplying the venison and to Nick, with Chui as his most able apprentice for the butchering demo. The tenderloin medallions were my idea of food heaven.

The air rifle shoot was fun and the cutting we did was great too, it was good to try some different knives. Tom TB_London did some sharpening for quite a few of us on his Japanese stones and it goes without saying that Longstrider had the usual queue for his sharpening services, so thanks to them.

As for the knife throwing, a young man named Farid challenged us all to a competition and I have to report that we were all completely outclassed by a rather unassuming gentleman who called himself Mick Spain. The only reason I mention it is because Mick would never blow his own trumpet and I want him to get the glory that he deserves

Mark, your "tyrant" as you call her is an absolute delight, though she does seem to have a penchant for Haribos, does she get that from you or Caroline? :)

Mick, I'm not blushing mate, I just caught the sun a bit ;) Please don't forget to send me some pics of Caroline's art project.

The only downer for me was I think my turbo popped it's clogs on the way home.....I'll know more when I get my mate to check it tomorrow but I've got a horrible feeling that it could be expensive!!!!!!

What date in August is the next one?

I've got friends the length and breadth of the country and the globe, and it's good to think that through a forum like this, you can add people with similar interests that you would never have met before to the list, and also become a sort of national community. I'm fairly new into it all, but i could see a lot of it amongst some of the more established members.

I'll try to get a Fallow for the next meet, be a bit more to eat rather than to just have a taste:yuck:

Man, that meet looks like bliss to me. You can see in the pics how chilled everyone is. Love it. Wish I was there.

If BB didn't exist Martyn then this sort of thing wouldn't happen.;) Cheers fella.:)
