Have had a chat with Bardster and this is available, and, the weather should be warming up nicely :)

Also, Bardster now has the shooting rights there, and with his BASC insurance, all covered for organising shoots, so folks can bring air rifles officially now.

Does this work well with the usual suspects and anyone who'd love to come and join in a very jolly time in the countryside.........?

If time no good, we can change.........

Will report costs etc., but as before, not a 'spensive weekend.

PS.

Site location postcode is TN27 9EY

Map for site once you're zooming in on a map:

http://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx181/PaulWiggins888/Bardsters.jpg

.............the very point of the white arrow is down a lane off the tarmac, the corner of the field.

Generally:

Costs for the campout at this stage are:

£5 per person per night (to be confirmed by Bardster soon)
Portaloo hire c. £110 (to be confirmed and to be split among all attending)

Details for payment in advance will be posted later or on the day with cash

Ideas of what to bring: (as TNHD's notes last year)

Each tent to bring:
- a bag of charcoal for communal BBQing - we have run out of charcoal before :C
- a bag of firewood (unless Bardster confirms that there is a plentiful supply onsite - TBC closer to the date)
- something foody for the communal cooking - sausages, burgers, bread rolls / pitta breads / jacket potatoes - we will have some venison, and possibly other joints, but do not rely on them being served every day
- booze / soft drinks depending on your own preferences.

This site is quite large, plenty of space for pitching a tent.........very rural and peaceful. Quite basic, just a portaloo - no showers or suchlike. Nearest pubs and villages are a drive away.

Huzzah! Thanks Roestalker. That haunch of venison last time was top scoff!

Be great if you could make it to this one in person too.

As a very rough idea of costs for people who've not been to one before, the last one worked out at about £15 a head for site hire and portaloo hire, and we all brought along charcoal for the communal cooking + grub to share + beverages to share, and a great time was had by all!.

And Farid did the most awesome paella known to man :)

Sadly mate i rarely touch a drop!:( I used to just get very happy, but i find i get very solemn nowadays over past experiences. Either that or i just want to go to bed!

I've stuck the date on the calendar in the hope it doesn't have to change, but if it does it will run the gauntlet of my busy life! When the Roe bucks are in season it can be a busy time of a weekend when folk want to come try their luck.

Hi Fluffy :)
Then I can rely on you to point out Eddie's affectionate name for his other half when she turns up at Bardster's? All this talk of vampires and werewolves has given me a taste for a real-life horror story. I think this could provide what is needed.

Before and after pictures would be a plus :D

Fine but you do have to bring:

+ a significant other we can wind up and incite to violence or

+ a video camera with which we can record Eddie's misfortunes or

+ both of the above

and lots of booze and food (preferably flesh)

That's OK. We're a tolerant crowd but it is probably best to avoid any public displays - we wouldn't want to frighten the livestock.

Just a thought...

We usually seem to end up with quite a few large joints and chunks of meat to cook at these things. Have you guys considered trying a hangi for a change?

It is a great way to cook outdoors for large groups and can be surprisingly versatile. Everything from whole pigs through fish and vegetables to dessert all in the same 'oven'.

I'd guess Bardster may have played with this style of cooking before.

It is a thought but I'd need to work out how to get the entire clan there together with gear and extra paraphernalia like wheelchairs. It is very unlikely to happen :(

Mum's not the "Kiwi Dundee" relative - quite. That would be her father who went bush at 12 to become a pig hunter back around the time of WW1. I wish he was around to come along. It would be a real eye-opener.

Think about a hangi anyway. They are great fun and not too hard. The only challenging bit would be finding the right sort of stones for the firepit.

Have you thought of putting in a permanent pit? You'd need to keep some loose soil handy but less than you'd need to completely refill the hole. The big problem would be keeping the rain out but I'd say a couple of pieces of corrugated iron would do the trick (and would be a typically Kiwi solution).

I'd be happy to come up one weekend and help dig a pit sometime although I'd probably need to cadge a lift.

What's the cider?

It's from Somerset...

It's a stall at the South Bank Food Fair who do cider, cheese and pickles... I had a pint of their dry last night when I met Am from work, and it's a cracking cider - nice and dry and quite tart. I'll try their medium next Friday and compare before deciding which to try and get.

They normally sell it in 4 pint jugs (the sort that you get milk from the supermarket in) but I was chatting to the stall holder, told him about the campout and that I'd want several to take so we'd arrange in advance so he'd have guaranteed stock.

His response - no problems. Let me have a chat to the boss because we could probably do you a 25L barrell and give you a bit of a discount for buying in bulk :D

Right, been on the dog to Miss Piggies Nemesis and there are now two deer walking around in the wilds completely unaware that they've just put the weekend on there "Something to do After they die" list.

Eddie will be on the lookout for a Muntjac and I'll hopefully get onto a Roe buck or a late Fallow buck (end of April) that will keep in a chiller till needed.

Now, how would you all prefer them to be brought along? We can do it cave man style where we turn up with a deer minus it's guts, head and feet that you can all skin and cut up into bite size chunks. Or, we can do it the Boring way where i get it all butchered and bring it along as if it came from Tescos?

On the next full moon I've got people pestering me and Him to go and shoot Boar with them. Not overly fussed with Boar myself, all in the name, Boar'ing, but if it leads to other invites nearer the weekend and i can get a Boar, what would folk think of a Proppa hog roast? Can't promise anything, but if desired I'd try and make it happen.

Chui
28-02-12, 11:44 PM
That all sounds great roestalker - very many thanks indeed.

I for one, would like to have a go at using some of my knives to cut up the beast once you've brought it along - if you don't mind some instruction, I'm quite sure a handful of us would be willing.

As for boar, I'd bite yer leg orf, mate...........it's my favourite meat of all, so yes please if you're able :D

I think we need to chat this through though - sounds like you're going to a lot of trouble - please pm me so we can ensure you are suitably rewarded, given costs are to be met

roestalker270
28-02-12, 11:58 PM
Well,

the Roe buck will cost me all of £2 to shoot, so I'm not all that worried really mate! And going out stalking is never Trouble! Getting a butcher to Tesco'ise them costs a few more shekels which i normally get back afterwards, but we're doing it B&Q style. Eddie's Muntjac might be dearer at £2.10 with those silly bullets he uses. Don't know what a Boar would cost, i expect it'll be £X per Lb. Time will tell on that one.

I'll get my reward watching everybody getting stuck in with all sorts of knives cutting up their dinners!

That is not specifically for you Paul, or even for Dave ;) , but a proper emergency kit and a qualified doctor on the scene would not go amiss.

Security gloves could help as well. I know we're all knife enthusiasts, but butchering is a skill that takes practice and where it is difficult to put safety measures in place like they do in Bladesport.

+1 on that Saint-Just, well raised.

I wouldn't be too keen on a spot of DIY butchery going on without a proper emergency kit and qualified doctor present.

I'm not moderating a drunken campout :D. I don't mind looking after this place a bit but please don't think a camping do at Bardsters is anything to do with BBs mods.

I shall bring a plaster for myself just in case, I generally don't attempt butchery or cutting comps, particularly after a beer or three. ;)

Well put Rich, the camping do is nothing to do with BB or BB mods, other than it is organised via here and most of the attendees are on BB.

As for the cutting comps - booze AFTER, not before. Any intoxicants in anyone and they're not cutting!

The same about the amateur butchery - if you want to try your hand and Roestalker is willing to teach, then great, BUT NO BOOZE BEFORE!

After the butchering session I doubt that there'll be any bits of deer large enough to hangi :(

Anyway, I vote we go traditional Maori for anyone who uses the hangi hole for anything other than cooking. Forget home-butchered deer - long pig is the only real 'man' food :D

Nope, I was just thinking it'd be a hoot to rig a slackline for drunken slacklining sillyness :D

(i.e. no more than 50cm or so off the ground)

I'll bring a slackline kit with me just in case!

Don't expect me to do any tricks though! I am a TOTAL novice... I've seen some slacklining and always wanted to have a go, but kept bottling out (as it was at public events).... Well, I decided sod it, it looks really good fun and I really want to try it - the campout is a good excuse. We can all be beginners together

Where as I (because it was a weekend) had already cracked open a tinnie before realising that the cutting comp was happening that day.
It wouldn't have been appropriate, Alcohol and using knives don't mix, particularly if you're prone to forget which hand is carrying what.

Guys - I don't mean to be rude, but could you thrash out some details and place them in the first post. For anyone new thinking of coming they might be put off having to read 15 pages to find out what, where and who this is all about?

Do you allow a one day pass for those who can't spare a whole weekend?

Do we think there would be any chance for a certification? the only reason I ask is Jade has expressed an interest to be certified so she could take part in any cutting done at Knives UK in June

I've been booking my 2012 leave this morning and have found out that 27th May is not the Spring Bank Holiday. A quick google found this:

In 2012, there will be a special holiday on Tuesday, 5 June, to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_Jubilee_of_Elizabeth_II). Therefore, to make it a four-day weekend, the Spring Bank Holiday that would usually occur at the end of May will be pushed back to Monday, 4 June 2012.

Am I the only fool that didn't know?????
