I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on manbags. Me and the missus are off to Skiathos in a few weeks and I li ke to have a little day pack for my suntan lotion, torch, bottle of water, camera etc.

Really I'd like something I can sling over my shoulder that sits at the waist. Had a look at the Maxpedition versipack stuff, but they look far too big and tactical looking. The M-4 Waistpack looks perfect, but doesn't have a shoulder strap. Know of anything similar?

The response pak can be warn over the shoulder like so....

You can get loads in them and they are cheap.

That looks great for the price! Might be a little on the large size though. Will buy one anyway! :D

The response pack is a direct copy of the MaxP Proteus bag which I have. The have a compression system that can actually make them surprisingly compact, and if that's not enough, I have used a couple of short webbing straps that I made up for next to nothing to compress mine even further. It's a great design I think, although not sure just how comfortable it would be to have the supplied strap over your shoulder like that.

This is the kind of size that would do me.

While it would be nice to have the extra space of the response pak, it's a little bit large for going out in the evenings to restaurants and whatnot.

I've got an M4 as well and it's a really useful little pack. You could always get a shoulder strap for it as there are a couple of loops on the back you could clip onto. Alternatively you could always make up a paracord strap for it maybe.

Interesting thread - I have been looking for something to take stuff on a commute into London each day - the iPad, a drink, lunch, keys etc. The SnugPak looks spot on so I might try one out until I know which laptop they will get me and how big a bag I'll need for that :)

Not convinced an iPad would fit very well into a response pak/Proteus, it might be somewhat tight depth wise.

I have one and it's great. Good quality materials and very well put together. It is small though, so make sure it's right for you. I use it for days out where it's better than loading my pockets down. This basically means camera, bottle of water and maxp micro, which fits perfectly in one of the two back pockets.

I've been meaning to post a review for ages; maybe I'll get round to it now.

Yeah, I think you might be right ... the 2 Sahara bags are probably a better fit.

I've tried one of those but they are a bit floppy - not much rigidity or shape to them, so they tend to tip over and spill their contents sometimes.

I had the hazard 4 tonto which was amazing quality, doesnt look 'tactical'. I fond it just a little small, doesnt hold a good size water bottle. Its best for just admin stuff. a few tools, maps, money, phone, pens etc.

I now have the original maxP versipack fatboy and its really good. You might be better off with the GTG version which has a water bottle holder. It's chealer and looks les tactical than the original.

5.11 do a push pack which might suit you. its a bit cheaper than both (i think) and each side pocket hold a full size 1 ltr water bottle. Plus its got a bigger main compartment than the other 2.http://www.kitreviews.com/images/jreviews/60_pushpack_1314869706.jpg

I wouldnt worry about them being too big.
I am pretty sure that a waist pack would not hold a bottle of water, sun cream and a camera. If they did, your trousers would be falling down.
When you get these things, you realise that you want to carry more than you thought. And these 3 bags are not really that large anyway.

Agreed, if I put a 750ml bottle of water inside, upright, it pops the press studs. I still edc it most days and get on well with it.

I've got an Indy style bag very similar but not quite as well made as that and find it very useful although the addition of a water bottle carrier has expanded it somewhat as you're right, it can be a bit on the small side.

At the moment I'm using a Jumbo Versipack which seems to be doing the trick, but if I did want something a little less tactical then I'd be quite happy to go back to the Indy bag :D

My next 2 purchases are in the the way of drybags - for the bike like - a big one and a little one

Have a look at Seal Line Urban rucksacks - roll tops. There si a 17L one that might suit you for the beach

All my remaining bag libido focuses on the name Seil Marschall

i know it isn't quite your requirements, but have you considered one of the "pocket rucksacs" like these:

waterproof: http://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/sea_to_summit_ultrasil_dry_day_pack.html

not-waterproof: http://www.ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/sea_to_summit_ultrasil_day_pack.html

i find them really useful for holidays and days out.

Like those, but fairly expensive, I've bought similar for about £8 although not waterproof.

How about an Alpkit Gourdon?
http://www.alpkit.com/shop/cart.php?target=product&product_id=16379&category_id=251
tends to be my go to bag when I want to carry a few bits that don't weigh a lot, or going out when it might rain. I use a 5.11 tactical sling bag as a work bag, but find the reduced weight of the Gordon, and its water resistance to be a bonus when out for a walk.
