View Full Version : Question about Rock/tree sliders and rotten sills.

I've been having a poke about under my Disco and the sills are looking pretty shot. I don't really want to chop them out and replace as it looks like a lot of welding and I have gas tanks under there. (Although I am going to rip them out soon). Will I get away with grinding back, rust treating and then bolting on rock sliders or tree sliders? And what are the relative merits of chassis mounted sliders and sill mounted ones?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on if they're rotten or just surface rust. If they're rotten, they will need replacing as they are considered structural. Chassis mounted rock sliders are nice, but won't make any difference. Sill mounted ones will just hide the rust.

A Landy expert should be along shortly.

afaik, if your truck is a ladder chassis with a bolt on body, as long as the body mounting points are solid then you can have big holes in the body and it will still pass. however, the chassis also has to be sound.

its a waste of time mounting rock sliders on the body, they need to go on the chassis if they are to be load bearing and really be used as rock sliders. sill mounted sliders are less likely to be able to support the weight of the vehicle for rock sliding, however they can give good protection against the occasional bash and stuff.

If you want to use rock/tree sliders you need them welded to the chassis mate, anything bolt on tears off nicely.. ask me how my step came off ;) In all honesty if you intend on using the sliders weld them to the chassis, if its cosmetic you want, bolt them on the side. A chat with chastiser will help no end.

EDIT ah well he beat me to it.. net lag... :)

Yeah, has to be sound for 12" round about the body mounting points iirc.

I've had a more thorough look. Outriggers are fine, which is a bonus but the outer sills are ex-sills. No alternative, if I plan to keep the old girl, but to cut out the sills and replace. Luckily I've found a place locally that does heavy duty replacements and rocks sliders. Time to get the angle-grinder out, I think. And the big hammer, little hammer and first aid kit.

go for it, its an easy job to do once you cleaned everything up.

I fitted them to mine before I sold it -- everything else was rotten.
