View Full Version : Cutting Competition at Bardsters, August Bank Hols
Longstrider

I'd just to like to let everyone know that the gathering at Bardsters over the August Bank Holiday weekend will include a proper, full-on Cutting Compertition :)
John56 has been incredibly generous in providing materials for a cutting bench that is now built and 'lives' at the venue so no-one has to transport a bench to and fro. If time allows I will be doing certifications for anyone interested on the Saturday. Plans are to hold a competition on the Sunday.
Please put your name down on the list if you are going to attend as once we know numbers we can then ensure sufficient supplies of water bottles, 2x4 etc etc etc.

i would be interested in being certified (careful!!). i missed the one last year as had to cancel attending the weekend.
I imagine I know in advance what the answer will be, but, any chance I could "have a go?"
If yes, I'd use the Ontario RTAK2 which I know isn't quite within the regs but it's close but it doesn't have a front lanyard hole.
If not, then I've watched a bit YouTube and would enjoy the spectacle

Of course you can have a go!
Just add your name to the list
There will be plenty of spare comp standard knives to borrow and practice with.

I'm confused, these 3-way relationships are often complicated. :]:surrender:

its that magic place where you are still allowed camp fires and can do archery, airgun shooting, cutting comps, knife throwing and then end the day, after some nice scoff, with a chat and a beer. sorta heaven on earth really :D

i'll leave it to Ian to answer as to size of event, but i understand (hope) that there will be some certifications and then a comp. dont rely on how many are taking part, come along for the afternoon at least as there will be lots to do.

the camping weekend will run over the three days of the bank holiday. it happens at a small unused farm just outside Egerton, right next door to Lenham ;) You could walk it from there ;) Come along and join us, if only for a few hours.

There's usually one or two "loaner" competition cutters floating around if you want to get certified and have a go!

That really isn't a problem.
UKPKs are allowed :] and there are plenty of loan choppers

I plan on going to Bardters and I normally take bows, throwing knives, competition cutter, airgun etc so you are welcome to have a play. If you are still planning to come to the range we can chat about Bardsters then.

Only if everyone else cuts left handed!
Tempting, but I'm used to axes and never used a comp knife. Might be a bit dangerous.
What does it take to 'get certified'?

Good stuff. I'll PM you when I can get involved.

:] did that for the first two years. everyone thought I was left handed :D
certification involves learning about safe cutting procedures and good cutting technique, you have some practice under the watchful eye of Longstrider who declares you fit to take part under the pressures of competition.

With over a dozen cutters this is shaping up to be a damned good event :)
For those who don't already know .... To become a BladeSports Certified Cutter you simply need to prove that you are able to attempt (not neccessarily achieve) the types of cut that you will see in a competition, in a safe manner. safe for you and for those around you. You will need to understand and adhere to the BladeSports Rules (available on the day). Certification is taken with a BladeSports Instructor (me) who will decide whether you are going to be a safe cutter in competition.
Your knife will have to meet BladeSports regulations if you are to compete in the competititon, but if you do not own such a knife then loaners will be available, both from other kind cutters and from me.
There will be a cost involved. Materials that we cut need to be payed for. I expect this to be between £15 and £20 per cutter for the competition, and a little more for those who wish to take Certification and then also cut in the comp (as they will get through more materials)
I will be looking to talk to cutters on the day about the way forward for BladeSports UK. I hope this will involve the running of a British Championship, (with placings and prizes) to probably be held during the Summer of next year. I will need help organising this event and will speak to cutters on the matter at Bardsters about this.

I want to see a UKPK do the "4 x 2". Entertainment while getting the dinner prepped. :]

that would be much more fun...would we allow time out for resharpening?
