View Full Version : Bags - what do you have

Tried looking for a general "what bag/ruck/edc pouch etc have you got type" of thread and couldn't find one so thought I would do one myself.

New here so hope i haven't missed it somewhere else !

Interested on seeing bags side by side for size comparisons.

Obviously people might change bags based on what they are doing but how do you make swapping gear over easy? Do you have a set amount of core gear that you always take? Do people have different pouches for different kit like medical/food prep/edc etc?

I'll start with a pic of my bags

http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg580/Charlie-122/EDC/Bags.jpg

From left to right: Celinni Microlight, Dakine Heli Pro 2, Musto messenger bag, Timberland pouch, Gul water proof roll up, Hawkstead waist/field bag, Maxpedition Falcon 2 (Main Bag), Northface Jester, Overboard waterproof rucksack and Hardigg Solid Stormcase.

If anyone wants any detail on any of these please let me know.

I reckon I've got too many to photograph, I'd probably need a fish eye lens to include all the rucksacks and messenger bags I have

My main two packs at the moment are a Maxpedition Condor II and a Kriega R35. Most days I use one or the other. The MaxP is being used as a work bag in the day time (when I'm on the tube/train) and then converted into a dog walk bag in the nice evenings (e.g stove, chair etc)

a rush 12 meets all my needs, but then i dont do backpacking as such. it is certainly enough for an every day, take to work bag and then is great for a days walking with the jetboil and stuff in it.

I use the rush 12 for my EDC.
I dont know why its called a 12 because it can easily hold more than 12hours worth of kit.
I have a rolly polly on one side for a big water bottle and a tubular grenade pouch on the other side for dog poo bags and hand sanitiser.
At work once or twice a week I do a 24-31 hour shift which includes an 8 hour sleep in. The rush 12 holds all my edc stuff, as well as an over night bag, change of clothes, dinner, breakfast and lunch, extra water bottle and a compact towel.

I have a maxpedition versipack for light weight walks, but if im going to be out all day I take a pretty cheap 15ltr bag I got from decathlon.

I use a Finnish gas mask bag for kicking about, a 20L Berghaus daysack on the bike and a Lowe Alpine 50L pack when travelling.

My watchword is cheap as, no matter the cost, I will break it or lose it. The pack was a hand-me-down, GM bag was £7 and the day sack was £12 in a Millets sale. All have performed admirably but they still can't touch the function/cost ratio of a placcy bag...

If they start making Tesco bags with shoulder straps I'll be set. :D

Particularly liking ManofKent's and MeetTheGeeks's setup

Need to get my kit sorted in pouches then i can transfer easily from one bag to the next as have kit everywhere at the moment!

Placcy bags seem pretty rare over here !

Many I have, all different

Only one I really want is a Kifaru 38L Express (sans molle) in coyote

But I do require a decent 70L lightweight. And have always wanted a GoLite something or other

PS spent some time looking at Eberlestock yesterday - lots of them - wasn't really grabbed.

Been using my Rush 12 all week while away with family. It's great bag for packing all that family needs gear in. Waterproofs, babywipes, drinks, packed lunch etc. The top zip thing is perfect for keys and money. Smaller front has all the need to get to quick items, main area for bigger stuff.

Lets see

Lowe Alpine 80L (camping) Not used much since the move back to Nottingham
Kifaru Maruader + lots of Extras - Mostly used as a large medical reserve bag
Lowe Alpine 30L Do it all bag and has held up since sixth form.
Kifaru E&E (with organiser) - Goes through phases of being used, gets used when I'm carrying bits of paper mostly
Kifaru Tailgunner - Very handy bag and morphs to suit a number of rolls
I've also got MaxP jumbo and proteus which were used as man bags when walking or cycling respectively, Hardly used since the Tailgunner came along

For Normal use the Maruader is too heavy IMO. Outside of using it for first aid I've never used the panel pocket, hydration section or any of the pals but in the very specific rol it works well but I think could be lighter. The 30L seems to be the better pack for normal. The Tailgunner has been the best normal use bit of kifaru gear I have, with the waist belt and shoulder straps it's stable for mountain biking, blends in with motorbike gear (and fits in the topbox with a helmet) yet doesn't look out of place with a suit

Here is my journey in search of the perfect backpack.

It started with a 5.11 Rush 24.
Great for for pocket and if you like to compartemtalize your stuff. I changed it because it looked a little bit to "tactical" for my taste and also because it is quite bulky and heavy. The shape of the bag doesn't change much if it's empty or full. So it always looks like you have a full bag. The bag is fairly squarish also. Not a looker!
I then moved to Osprey and never looked back. Fantastic brand. A lot of thought are put in their backpack. Very functional.
I first got an Osprey Quazar:
http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/zagabul/quasar.jpg
While very comfortable with a laptop pocket I found it too bulky when empty. Also i hated the compression straps on the side. They always get in the way when you want to open the bag.
I then got the Osprey Talon 11:
http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/zagabul/talon11clover.jpg
Great lightweight small backpack with water pocket. Two pocket on the straps are ideal for a GPS and a compass. Hip pocket are a plus also. Great for day hike as long as you don't bring to much with you. I just wish it would be a little bit bigger.
Here comes the Osprey Escapist 15:
http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/zagabul/escapist15.jpg
Front pocket is great to organise your stuff, only 1 strap pocket (OK still), I pulled the trigger on that one because of the extra space vs the Talon 11 but also because of the integrated waterproof cover. The only problem is that the cover takes space at the bottom of your bag and is in the way if you want to carry larger items at the bottom of your bag. It feels like the Talon 11 can hold more stuff than the Escapist 15...:S
Finally is just got the Osprey Hornet 32:
http://i426.photobucket.com/albums/pp350/zagabul/osprey-hornet-32.jpg
Amazing bag! Super light weight, huge capacity and packs very small when empty.(picture doesn't give justice - Empty it is as big as the Talon 11). It is a top loader (the only one from the list) which for me makes a lot of sense now that I am using it. It is my EDC bag. Small enough on the bike but big enough to carry your groceries if need be or go for an overnight. The only thing i would like to change on this bag is the mesh on the top. It should have been ripstop nylon like the rest of the bag. I got the separate Opsrey waterproof cover for it and it fit like a glove (as you would expect)

Hopefully this is it. :surrender: Best bag for EDC, Carry on luggage, Day hike, Overnighter, Travel: Osprey Hornet 32! :happy72:

Work- Maxpedition Sitka (khaki). Contains lunch, stethoscope, pens, personal medication, ThruNite Ti light, spare batteries, hygiene kit (for nights), book and other bits I've probably forgotten.

Out & About- 5.11 RUSH 12 with Bottle Carrier. Contains 'Potette' folding potty with several liners, FAK, multitool (Charge TTi), spare torch (Balder SE1), change of clothes for my daughter, snacks, drink, pen and paper, spare batteries, titanium spork, iPod/kindle, hand sanitiser, probably more.

The Sitka was my 'potty bag' but it was really uncomfortable under load. It's fine for work as it only gets carried short distances. The RUSH 12 is a great bag, maybe a bit heavy and not great in the heat (sweaty back!) but the best bag I've used so far.

OK, change this to 3 bags in very regular rotation
Millican Ryan Domepack - work bag when travelling by public transport (which is more than I'd like at the moment)
Kriega R35 - work bag when travelling by motorbike
MaxP Condor II - longer walks with the dog (i.e. not a park with concrete paths!). Go to the fields nearby so is now ready packed with brew kit, bins, chair, waterproof, torch, folder

Couldn't be bothered with having to switch bags in the evening when walking the dog. The MaxP pack is perfect for this duty, I can drag it past overgrown brambles and branches, and dump it down on anything and its happy. Don't carry much weight in it. Sweaty back though!

My other bags get used less frequently, but all have a specific purpose!

Hill People Gear Tarahumara - lovely setup but I'm in two minds about the harness - i'm a skinny runt and it doesn't sit all that well on me - I've even got disheartned enough to put it up on here once of twice but I think now I've resigned it to my winter daypack - when I've enough layers to pad it out

I've a small TT hydration pack for biking

Started off with a 5.11 Rush 72 thinking it could do for all my needs but found it was too big for everyday and not big enough for several days worth of walking. Current line up (all in black) is as follows:

5.11 Rush 12 for work
Kifaru X-ray for shopping and hiking anywhere up to two days
Kifaru Zulu/XTL for walkiing anywhere longer or Winter when I've got more gear to carry (or if I'm bringing a case of beer home from the shops)
5.11 Rush 72 now carries my winter car gear but I'll probably sell it on sooner or later
Also got a Deuter Attack for if I ever get the pushbike out again

All sorts of pouches from all the usual suspects so I'm pretty sorted for every eventuality now. Only change I might make is that as I don't carry a laptop for work now, I may switch the Rush 12 for a Kif E&E or something smaller.

Ortlieb Messenger pro - big, waterproof, I'm using it for pretty much everything big but perfect for cycling and is pretty much exactly the same size as ryanairs restrictions for hand luggage.

Got an old fjällräven as well for general use when I don't have to carry as much (even thou it fits impressively much for the size)

might look into something more specific for hiking/backpacking/camping, but I feel I have a bit too many backpacks atm.

Revived a TAD fast EDC today. Rather impressed after a brief look over it.
Now to sell off my MaxP Kodiak and Vulture II.

5.11 Rush 12 as a general backpack and it may soon replace my messenger bag for work.
Random goatskin messenger bag for work at the moment - smelt really bad when I first got it
Snugpak stamina for short trips and shopping

I have added a couple more to my list: -

Maxpedition RolyPoly Rucksack - good for a change of clothes and an iPad, but really needs a waterproof bag inside.
Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon 2 - The new bag for work, will carry iPad, EDC stuff, A4 notebook, meds, waterproof trousers, etc. etc.

Kifaru G2 Scout
Eagle Industries Becker Patrol Pack.

Now find myself 'needing' a TAD Litespeed. Fast pack is perfect for work but just that bit too big for days off.

30 year old Karrimor Alpiniste bought with first grant cheque (when they existed !)
Karrimor Jaguar for backpacking
Macpac 50l job as main climbing sack
POD Cragsack for cragging/ winter walking
POD teardrop for summer walking
Lowe contour runner for running/ light days out
North face Modem ( was my dads) for holidays etc

TUMI ballistic nylon shoulder bag for school
Aluminium attache case now rarely used
Leather briefcase ditto

Kifaru Claymore as manbag
Nature company field bag es ex manbag !

And I still think I would like a Kifaru sack or two.....................
In my defence, all get pretty regular use, I am a huge fan of the right tool for the job. (Thats my story anyhow..........)

Everyday carry?
Filson. Or Briggs & Riley. Or both.
