i came across this (http://www.lovejoy-inc.com/catalog/vsd.pdf) while building my grinder someone may find it of use,i've no idea how much they are but my scheppach bandsaw uses one to vary the speed.

They definately look interesting. Meant to be "inexpensive" solution. I loke the moveable motor mounts too.

A good alternative to the rheostats that cut motor rpms but also cause torque loss and not nearly as expensive as variable frequency drives for three phase motors.
Can you find a junked exercise treadmill and use the parts from that?
