View Full Version : Daywalker SubCom

Hi folks

As most of you will know there has been a lot of interest in the Boker SubCom designed by 'Daywalker' (Chad to his mates) who is a well known figure across the Bladeiverse:

http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16428

I got mine today and I'm very impressed. Chad has said there will be a newer version coming out with an AUS-8 blade and longer clip, but despite that I'm interested to know if anyone is interested in a passaround of the original model? I propose it as a 'pay and raffle' passaround where participants pay their proportion of the cost and at the end we raffle it, winner takes all. If we get ten people then it will only be a couple of quid each as the knife only costs Eu29.00 delivered. I'll order it but not join in the raffle.

If you are interested then sign up below.

Aloha Danzo,

Wow, sorry, I only noticed this now. Much mahalo's to everyone who has expressed an interest in the SF. Apparently, it is doing very well in Europe...I think better than in the US.

The "upgraded SF" will have AUS8 stamped on the blade as well as a longer clip. I hope. I will confirm this when I hear from BokerUSA, but the German Knifebrothers told me this info, so it should be all good.

There is also a SFB in the makes.

Also, another version of the SF with a "new" blade shape...I will keep everyone here updated, but for now, please enjoy the SF. All things considered, it really is a great lil' bugger!;)

Mahalo everyone, and thanks Danzo. God bless you all:!:

I'm thinking that RMSD might be OTT for this one. It would cost a total of £50 which would buy two and a half of these knives, so I'm going with Recorded. It's not much but at least there is a receipt and a signature and it will be covered by the insurance.

Bardster - is that the factory edge? If so, me likely :D

Its diddy innit! Looks nice, feels nice and is very sheeple friendly, just a pity its a locker :(

I am finding the opening method a bit tricky, but DW did warn about that. Am getting better at it as I practice.

Also, the ball detent lock is amazingly strong, theres also a very positive click as the blade passes the ball and before it engages the lock.

All I can asy at th mo is, someone give me a good reason to let me EDC this beauty :C

Excellent, my replacement for it arrived too. Heinnie now have them in stock at £23 and next day delivery! :D :D
Yup that is indeed the factory edge. I have carried my other one nonstop for about 6 weeks now and havn't sharpened it yet. Gets used for opening all sorts. and its still allmost shaving sharp.
Although it looks small and sort of disapears in the hand it cuts like a big knife.
nobody blinks when i use it in the office. its great. If I was stopped by anyone and asked to justify it i would say that its a safe box opening tool, and it doesnt scare people like my perfectly legal pocket knife, showing the UKPK. :D :D

The opening gets easier - the khife seems to need wearing in. mine now opens so smoothly i can open it with a flick of my thumb. The new one is a little too stiff to do it with.
But its a superb design and I will continue to carry it as EDC.

I think - and this is opinion only - that a police officer would have to be having a really bad day, or you were being particularly stupid, to get pulled with this.

I think - and this is opinion only - that a police officer would have to be having a really bad day, or you were being particularly stupid, to get pulled with this.

The point is that as much of an ass as we know the law is, its the law and no matter how bad the constables day may be, he has a right to pull me up on it.

However, I have been thinking about this for a while and I reckon I open enough boxes, packages etc to use that argument and am now thinking I will get one and carry it. But, I will remain constantly aware that I may have it confiscated or have other things 'happen to me' if I were searched and it found.

Rgds

bardster
10-03-06, 05:27 PM
Oh I quite agree Mr Y, but having a £23 knife confiscated would not hurt nearly as much as a £53 knife... As a computer engineer/systems installer I am constantly opening boxes so feel thats its justified to carry a "small" knife, locking or otherwise. But i really couldn't justify doing the same tasks with a UKPK - especially in the environment where I work. Even though it is legal. I know its raising an old arguament here about the UKPK so I shall say no more.

And Danzo? it cost me £22.95 from heinnie. And you may as well knock off the postage for the TBI's :) seeing as I owe you that anyway :)

Aloha Mr_Yarrow!,

Yes, the "sweet spot" is the part of the stud closest my logo, and PRESS it open, don't "push" it. I'd have liked the stud to have been made a bit better, but oh well. Once you get used to opening it, it opens *fast*...

Now, as for an excuse to carry it, sir, it is so small. Fits in watch pocket of jeans, or simply carry in back pocket. I don't know how common this is for you, but everytime someone asks to borrow a knife, pass them the SF as opposed to your UKPK.:D

The SF is a small cutter with pretty big cutting ability. Outcuts every knife I own in it's size range, YET it is more expendable. I mean, i'd much rather lose, or have someone misuse this knife than let's say...my Spyderco Dragonfly, Kiwi, or Cricket. I know of a few people who carry it on their keychains and it doesn't "look like a knife" when closed, so it merely get's overlooked as some kinda car remote.

Simply put, it is a user that can take a heck of a beating...I abused the heck out of the pre-pro sample I got and it's still in top shape, only had to resharpen here and there, or just strop it, and tighten the pivot. That's it. Also it is very people friendly...some even think it's *cute*.

Keep us posted please, and God bless:!:
Chad

PS: I am not familiar with your laws there...is the SF a legal locking knife to carry?

Okay Danzo, sorry for going off topic.

Chad, that's like apologising to Barney the Dinosaur for being purple yourself.

:D

If you could convince Boker to do a slipjoint version of this I reckon they would sell even more. It would make them 100% legal in Britain, and if the thumbstud was replaced by a simple 'nick' like on a SAK they would be legal in Denmark. And the European Union is looking hard at Denmarks law.

Even back in the USA I know a lot of folks are beginning to worry about carrying locking blades, however small.

Maybe a thought?

Keep safe, mate

On the sharpening aspect of this little beauty...I have touched it up ONCE, with three stokes either side of the blade with a medium grey ceramic rod, and I cut with it every day...maybe just two or three cable ties, other times perhaps a few cardboard boxes...and most nights, I slice my food on the plate, but carefully so as not to flatten the edge...

I was first on the scene at a road accident to day, and afterwards showed one of the cops the "cute" knife..I had cut the safety belts to get two children out. The edge was sharp, and the cuts clean, and the officer thought I had used a scalpel!
I had to justify my actions, and so showed him the Daywalker...

He will be Googling tonight, no doubt!

It does make it a touch thinner, and might even fit in my Billabong wallet...

Got it :)

It's well made, and definately a nice design but it's not for me. IMO the handle's too small to hold it well, unless you put your thumb across the entire spine of the blade. I liked the pocket clip, a little to strong for me, but if it was my own knife I would have just bent it out :)

I found that I wasn't using the thumb ramp as it was meant to be used, I was just using the very corner like you would use a stud. It opened very nicely, but after half an hour in front of a TV it starts to hurt your thumb. Not really a problem for a user though.

In terms of looks, it's great, very original and almost cute. A big hit with the NKP I showed it to :D

A couple of photos, nothing fancy:

Mahalo ElThomsono,

Ack! Sorry it wasn't your cup o' tea.:( I think you would have needed to fob it and run it tip down. Few folks had the same "feeling" towards the lil' SF as you did, but when I changed their clips to tip down and fobbed it, they were smiling afterwards.

Thank you though, I hope ONE of my designs will be YOUR "cuppa" one day!;)

I got it today :D

My first impression was it was a lot smaller than I was expecting, I was expecting it to be closer to credit card size, but I think that was down to its shape, removing it from its box it felt a lot heavy than I was expecting, it's a nice satisfying weight, it gives it a good quality feel :)
I was expecting it to be a little tricky to open one handed, but I didn't have a problem, I opened it with my thumb first try and it made a nice satisfying click, I found disengaging the lock a little tricky, I haven't found a very comfortable way of doing it yet. My only other problem with is the clip is way too stiff, too stiff to actually be of any use, I couldn't manage to clip it on to my pocket or even my thin t-shirt so it certainly needs loosened up a bit.
It's been on mail opening duty this morning which it's been handling with ease as you'd expect, it's not going to get a lot of heavy duty use from me since I'm pretty much an arm chair user, but so far I'm rather impressed by it and if there was a looser pocket clip it would be an excellent EDC.

I will be getting one of these, it's a lovely little knife and my biggest problem with it is the pocket clip since I can get used to lock since it's really not that much of an issue.

Cheers

take the clip off and put a small piece of rubber or card under it - works a treat
for closing - hold it upside down and push the liner across with your thumb and close the blade with your index finger. the blade will close but be stopped by your thumb in the choil - remove thumb and finish closing. I carry mine every day - its my pocket fondler so i have become very practiced at opening and closing it ;) I can always show on a webcam if its not clear

Aloha Pyro,

THANK you sir. Be advised that the AUS8 versions are being sold in Germany and should hit everywhere else soon. I have seen pics of this "improved version" and the clip is longer...hopefully it eased the tension a bit. As for the closing aspect, I could have added notches to aid in closing, but I figured that I would just leave them off...I am never interested in closing a knife fast.:P

Just wondering Mark, is your friend a NKP? It seems a lot more NKP friendly than the UKPK which is why I think it would make an ideal EDC :D

I didn't sharpen it since I'm not that confident with the sharpmaker yet (although I have been recruited t sharpen one of my friends dull SAK which it done an amazing job on), but it was sharp enough for everything I used it for when I got it :D

He is a NKP. But he takes an interest in many of the things I collect. He wants it for cable stripping at work. But is currently also looking at hawkbill bladed knives as well.

As EDC it would be good. Shame there is no slipjoint version for those of us without a good reason in the UK. Hint. :)

I was early for a customer today, and there was an old gum tree standing in the road reserve...I picked up a branch about half an inch thick and two foot long...
I whittled chisel edges and patterns in the branch, till it was too short to hold...
The edge would cut, but not shave...
The edge needed three strokes either side on a medium grey ceramic rod, and it was shaving sharp again...
The flat grind helps in slicing, and even though the 420 is not reknowned for edge holding...this little babe does well!

It's arrived safely. Score so far: NKP says it's the nicest one he's seen me with. (The UKPK scared him.)
Package opening is a breeze, as you'd expect. Letter opening isn't so easy due to the blade geometry.
Thumb slicing is damned easy! Yes, I know I was warned. I was trying the thumbnail flick & somehow ended with my thumb resting on the edge. Wish I could get my edges this good!
Empty cardboard boxes don't stand a chance against stabbing.
Spydie drop takes a bit of practice to get right.
'Waving' it open on my chinos doesn't work. I'll try jeans at the weekend.
We're heading to the New Forest at the weekend, so it'll get some testing there.
Is it okay to keep it until Tuesday?

It's on it's way to TopCat now.
It's one of those gadgets that's very hard not to play with, isn't it? I drove the wife nuts, & even showed it off to peeps I wouldn't normally bore with sharp things. It proved good for light whittling, with plenty of control but heavier stuff got uncomfortable due to the 'teeth' on the handle.
It will 'wave' on jeans if pushed hard into the corner of the pocket to start with. It fits very nicely into the watch pocket. So well that you can forget all about it until you want it. It was o.k. for salad prep too, except I lost more blood to it in the process. Chad, this isn't a knife, it's a vampire! :D
One drawback of the deep blade is that it's difficult / impossible to make fine 'coring' type cuts, for. e.g. I normally cut around the stem of a pepper & remove most of the seed part that way, but with such a deep blade I couldn't maneuver it like I normally would, so resorted to sectioning the pepper & de-seeding each section. Similar curving cuts for carving & suchlike would present the same sort of problem. Errrrr, I mean reason for buying another knife! :D
I washed it this morning & stropped it to just shaving sharp (All it needed really, it was still sharper than most NKP's idea of sharp). There are a few light scratches on the LH side of the blade now from whittling. I hope that won't be a problem?

Topcat02
19-04-06, 10:02 PM
Well I received it today, and can't see what all the fuss is about. It's small it's solid, very sharp, and fits in your pocket.

It cuts, slices, and err flicks open and closed.

In fact I was so unimpressed I've bought an AUS8 one from Deutschland.

Who's next, I only needed 5 mins to make my mind up.

'Waving' is opening the blade whilst drawing it from the pocket by catching the pocket seam with some sort of 'hook' on the spine of the knife. Invented by Ernie Emerson. See here:

http://www.emersonknives.com/Tact_index.html

The little hook thingy at the top catches on the pocket and opens the knife as you draw it. Mainly used for topics we don't discuss!

Hi Riz

As Danzo says, it's to lever the knife open as you pull it out of your pocket.
The Suncom doesn't have a wave, but the thumbstuds are proud enough that they will catch on the edge of the pocket & 'wave' the blade open. However, I'll leave that there - as Danzo says it's primarily used in situations that are not discussed on this forum.

Now, I get to say something that I take a lot of fun in saying to a Mod: :D :P
Danzo, you're WRONG!

Emerson may have developed the wave into it's present form, but it was first invented (afaik) during / after the American civil war, where it was an indentation on the tip of a knife blade, used to catch on a belt loop or pocket edge & lever the blade open. It was designed for the thousands(?) of people who'd lost a limb in the war to be able to carry on using a pocket knife.
Here's a modern one: http://www.agrussell.com/knives/by_type/folding/slipjoint/bker_one_arm_jack.html

Sorry Danzo, I just couldn't resist! ;)

We all repeat the things we thought were true ad nauseum but I'm always pleased to see that accepted truths are wrong and stuff existed much earlier than we believe. Like pasta. Everyone got so involved in the Chinese/Marco Polo/Italian argument they didn't bother to check with the Greeks who have made pasta for about four thousand years.

Ernie Emerson patented the modern incarnation called the "Wave", but various designs (such as the one Ratel linked to) and mods have been used over the years. One of the budget options was to put a cocktail stick/match inside the knife so that the blade didn't close fully. The tip of the blade, protruding from the scales, would then catch on the pocket and open the knife on the draw.

Anyhoo, it's my turn for the Subcom now I believe?

I was interested when this thread started despite my thinking that I have quite enough knives ... well, more than enough really ... but I certainly do not need any more bushcraft/fixed blades and I'm not that interested in folders ... but this is quite an unusual shape and it intrigued me and ... oh, you know the rest. When I heard that the toolshop had the AUS8 version and that it was only 29 euros I just couldn't stop myself.

Anyway, I'm well pleased with it; fits my jeans subcom pocket (as an aside: I guess most people consider these pockets are for small change but I'm sure I read somewhere they were originally designed for pocket watches; I certainly can't get change out of them when I need it. However, the pocket could have been designed for the subcom :D ). I found it not so great at slicing through thin branches; the extreme curve seems to make the blade slip around the branch but then I guess it wasn't designed for that use anyway. I really do like the way it can be carried so unobtrusively.

One thing I wanted to comment on though is the thumb stud. I think it should be rotated through 30 - 45 degrees so that, when the blade is housed, the stud would be in a line with the hinge. Were the stud round it wouldn't be directional in any sense but this stud slopes inward and has a flat face almost parallel with the blade's spine. These features make you want to push or pull it out perpendicularly to the blade's spine but you really need to push it almost in the reverse direction to which the blade points when housed. If the stud were rotated it would indicate the direction in which force should be applied.

Just an idea and a small point ... I've never designed, or made, a folder. I'm interested to know what fellow BBers think.

Aloha ris,

Thanks for your support and for your comments. I liked that one about the SF pocket on jeans!

Well, as for the stud, I tried placing it closer to the way you interpreted...sort of. When I used gloves, my glove would get caught on the way out on the scale. (This knife I thought would do well in Europe, so I had to take into consideration the winter use of the SF;) ) The "sweet spot" on the SF is the corner of the stud closest my logo. Try hitting it there and pressing it open...you *might* forgive me and Boker for not moving the stud.;)

Anyway, all in all, I am glad that you liked it enough to buy one. About the branches, perhaps just getting used to the SF will change it's affect on them?;)

God bless and mahalo for taking the time to comment!8)

Hi Chad. My avatar is the wonderfully talented Eliza Dushku, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer et cetera.

Oh, and another opinion on the Subcom: I showed the missus it yesterday. Her comments: "That's really cute! It's a sweet little chubby thing!".

This would perhaps explain what she sees in me... :O :P

Aloha Fraser,

Ahhhhh, okay, thanks for telling me.

Yes, the SF gets that response of "cuteness" a LOT. What is odd is that some guys say it's cute, then talk about all the nasty things that I cannot talk about here which can be done with the SF!

May I say that you and your wife, have great taste!;)

Aloha Mate,

Danzo the Manzo, mahalo my friend. It is rather amazing how well this lil' one caught on all over the place...allow me to add some quotes for the SF to "celebrate":

"The SUBCOM is a stout, extremely functional knife that offers big-blade cutting performance in a package so small you'll never want to be without it.”

Michael Janich
Contributing Editor
Tactical Knives Magazine

“Nice design, I like the concept.”

Steven Dick
Tactical Knives Magazine

“I was fortunate enough to evaluate the Boker/Magnum Subcom Folder designed by Chad Los Banos. This knife, although compact, performed every cutting task I asked it to, flawlessly. It's a compact knife that does a convincing impersonation of a full size knife, only it's very concealable.”

Rick Sjodin
ESDS Instructor

"Chad Los Banos' design endeavor is nothing short of creative genius, meticulously developed and designed from the blade point to the lanyard hole. The Subcom F is both attractive and functional much to his credit. It is refreshing to see new, innovative and creative design work enter the knife marketplace."

Sifu Dr.Jan Miller
Dragon Tiger Kung Fu Center, Smithtown NY

"The size of the SUBCOM Folder is perfect for a low profile EDC and got a good grip"

Fred Perrin

"May be cute, but damn sure cuts!"

Stuart Ackerman
Knifemaker/Designer

After a nice play over the weekend this has now been posted onto Phil.

I don't think there's anything I can add that hasn't already been said; huge cutting ability for the size of the blade, nice & light, discreet size and comfortable to hold.

Unfortunately if I was in a position to justify a locking knife then I would probably have something bigger, therefore I don't think I'll be getting one. Of course, if a slipjoint version was available that would be a whole different story ...

Thanks Danzo et al for the chance to try this one out.

It's a pleasure and I agree that it is a shame that we would need a justification for something as innocuous as the SubCom, but such is life on this little island. Aloha Danzo the Manzo!

Hey my friend, I will let the cat out of the bag and say that Mr_Yarrow, bardster, Damage1978, UK KEN, and SimonG were all in cahoots with a SF Slippy design I did...I wanted to surprise you! However...

A batch of slippy SF's for some reason would have to be about double the usual batch size...I dunno if I am allowed to say exactly how much that is, but it is a LOT.

So, that being said... would a couple thousand UK folks buy an SF Slippy?;) :?: I did send Boker Germany this thread, and well...the only thing I think that is causing hesitation is the amount that would have made, and then hopefully sold.:C

I will keep trying though...it's terrible that a knife the size of the SF, or even a Spyderco Ladybug, needs to be "justified"...

Anyway, mahalo for your support Danzo, and to everyone else who posted here:!: :!: :!: I greatly appreciate you all.8)

Y'know Chad, I wouldn't be surprised if the distribution was right. Maybe selling through outdoor stores and gadget websites as well as regular kife sellers. But it wouldn't just be UK I think. Denmark has strict laws as does Ireland. In factr in Ireland you can't carry any knife AT ALL without good reason, but a little box-cutter/pencil sharpener (;) ) like the Subcom would probably go unnoticed in the Emerald Isle.

And I've noticed that even in the US folks seem to go for the UKPK as a city knife. The NKP (Non Knife People, our polite term for 'sheeple') are everywhere and seem to worry a lot of US knifeknuts. Who's gonna freak out over a Slippy Subcom?

If you go through the thread and come up with a numbered list of participants based on when they got it, i.e im number 1, ElT is number 2 etc I will then sort out a random number generator from Google and send you the link, you just type in the number range 1-10 for example and it will them randomise those numbers.

I thought that you would then use the string as a basis for something else!

Ooh, crikey, don't complicate things Jim!

:C

I'll allocate numbers based on the number of those involved (11) divided into the available lottery numbers (49) and then whoever gets the bonus ball number wins.

So that's numbers 1,2,3 4 for Mr Yarrow, etc. There will be five numbers left over but I shall devise a fiendishly clever (stop sniggering in that mocking fashion, Yarrow, it does not become you) wild card scheme before Saturday should numbers 45-49 pop up.

Simple, easy and very transparent.

I did a bit of wiring on Saturday, for a friend's house extension...I left my Stanley knife behind by mistake, as well as my Swisstool....and used my Subcom F the whole day for odd cutting jobs, baring wire, enlarging holes in plasterboard, and cutting pink batting (fibreglass). The shape of the blade is ideal for most tasks, and I found that the short curve has less chance of me cutting my opposed thumb.
About 15 strokes with a ceramic rod afterwards, a bit of isopropyl alcohol to clean the blade and handle cavity, and it looks good again...

Well done Ratel!

:biggthump

Khimbar, if you would be so kind as to post this on to Ratel we can draw to a close a very interesting passaround. It didn't last the longest, or involve the most people, but it evolved over seven pages and received a mind-boggling 3324 views as I write!

Many thank to Chad the Daywalker for the Subcom design, Boker for putting it together, Bardster for getting us out of a hole when the first one went missing and everyone who participated.

:party11:

No thanks to the Royal Mail who lost the first knife and are still trying to wriggle out of compensation. But as we all have come to know and love they are an institution to whom the motto 'Less is More' was made for.....

Well done everyone, that was one a good one.

Danzo

Aloha Danzo,

I dunno what else to say to you and to everyone who participated except mahalo much.

All of you have been great, and the honor is indeed mine to have "met" you all in this passaround.;)

God bless and thanks again...er, BTW...what does "git" mean:?:

BTW...what does "git" mean:?:

It's a fairly mild mannered insult, that can also be used in a sort of friendly way. Maybe similiar to a**hole in America, but less severe.

Examples!

A workmate breaks your knife using it as a prybar: 'You stupid careless git!'

A buddy goes home with the cutest girl in the bar: 'You lucky git!'

Mainly used by men, and only ever used towards men. Still not a word you would use at the family dinner table.

We seem to have a lot of 'semi-bad' language like that, don't we? I'm sure it confuses Americans no end, as there isn't a real comparison to our more jokey swearing.
