View Full Version : Norwegian maker - Knudsen???
Question for our Norwegian members (or anyone else). Anyone familiar
with a maker signing B. Knudsen, Trondhjem?
Just got a knife signed by him. A standard birch
mushroom shaped handle and "mora" shaped blade
(but not a mora blade) and fish tail style leather
sheath. Any info, bio, dates, etc. appreciated.
Thanks
Rich
Sorry but I have only heard of a norwegian knifemaker "Knutsen" further south - in Lillesand at this link:
http://home.c2i.net/bknudsen/index.html
Probably not the same but :D
:)
Actually he spells it the same way, but not the same maker, much too young
for this knife. He sure makes some beautiful pieces though.
Also found a good Scandi makers page on his site.

Rich, do you have any more info than that ? Or a pic please.
You could try to contact Øystein Køhn or Per Thoresen. Øystein is the editor of the Norwegian knife magazine and Per is the author of some 4 or 5 books on Norwegian knife history, knifemakers and how to make knives (and he live in Trondheim himself).
PM me for contact details.
At the moment all I have is the seller's pic. When I get the knife, I'll
get some good pics and post them. Thanks all for the suggestions
and help.

Here's a pic of the Knudsen. Signed in an oval style; B. Knudsen, Trondhiem
Appears to be a curly birch handle with mushroom pommel and brass ferrule.
Blade (I think) is laminated. A classic Mora shape.
Leather "fish tail" sheath

Hi Rich, no new info on these I'm afraid. Guys are "looking into it" that's all I can say at the moment.
Rumor has it that my, usually, best reference for such things is quite ill, so I don't want to push him.

My editor Steven Dick, just emailed me about a knife he got me in Norway, supposedly made during WWII. It is marked B. Knudsen, Trondhjem, Norge. It has a 4 inch almost spear pointed blade with a swedge on the top of the point. A nickel silver (?) bolster 3/8 inch wide , with a plain birch handle, with a puukko like birds head butt. It also has the small brass knob sticking out of the butt for the retention strap the Norwegians use. The sheath is a hard black fiber material, with a metal throat and tip, engraved with Norge a deer and some scroll work. It has a leather belt loop. I am not sure it is original to the knife but the seller in Norway said it was.
The data I got from another message board was that B. Knudsen dates are
1892-1960, so your knife would fit in these dates quite well.

Steven Dick has a German knife book he got at this yers IWA show with the same knife and sheath in it, along with it having some sort of German WWII markings. Apparently engraved with an artillery unit designation, I will post it when he enmails me the information, but apparently Knudsen was making these knives during WWII. Cannot tell from the spine of the blade but on each side is the fairly distinctive line indicating that it is a laminated blade. All in all it is a very nice little knife, the only downside is that the fiber sheath does not hold the knife well. May get around to having a leather sheath made for it.

The Knudsen knife in that German knife book beside having his name, Trondhjem and Norge is also marked:
"Kriegsweihnachten 1943 West Batterie Norwegen" Anyone able to translate?
I think:
War Christmas 1943 west battery Norway
