View Full Version : Fer de Lance
Hello,
During a recent house move I re-discovered a knife I bought back in the mid eighties whilst serving. Its a double edged fighter, with black wood slab handles. Its stamped 'David E Steel' and Pacific Cutlery, Balisong.
Any one any info.
Mark
Cant help you with your question but welcome to British Blades :D
Hi and welcome Mark
Pacific Cutlery and the Bali-Song brand were the predecessor to the modern Benchmade Company...
www.benchmade.com
....and Benchmade retain the Butterfly logo.
It could be worth quite a bit. Any chance of a picture?
Here's some pics of old Pacific Knives:

Anything there?

Thanks guys,
It's basically the Timba 770 but without the serrated back edge, nylon multi hang sheath looks the same.
Will try a sort a picy or two.

Pacific Cutlery. As already mentioned, it was the forerunner to todays Benchmade knives. Set up in the early 1980's, I think, by Les DeAsis, in-house designers included David E. Steel and Jody Samson among others. I understand Mike Stewart also had some input into some of the designs. David Steel was a well known knife writer at the time in the US.
The knife you have would have been made in Japan-I think only the custom balisong knives were made in the US at that time. The scales are made from micarta, not wood. I'm pretty sure the blade steel is AUS8, fairly typical at the time and used on several of the PC models.
One the whole, most of the PC models I have owned and handled were well made
Value? That would depend on condition. Unused and in the original box you might get between $2-300 on Ebay. That can vary on whether two collectors go after it or not. I have seen the boot knives selling for over $100 recently on there.
It can be seen here:

Hello
Yep thats the one. In as new condition, no box tho, can't seem to remember it coming in one. Bought it from what used to be the old Survival AIDS shop that used to be at Euston Station whilst on the way home on leave. I think it must have been 1986 or 87 paid about £90 fot it.
Thanks for the info guys.

You're welcome.

Brings back a lot of old Memeories.
I did that Whole Catalog. It was one of the last projects I did before leaving the Company.
I designed all the Fixed Blades except for the Weehawk. That was designed by Jody Samson. I designed all the Locking Folders with Jody.
If you look carefully at the Fer-de-Lance--you will see the Mamba/Evo-1 handle.
I designed that handle in 1978. David Steel Designed the Blade.
I designed the Timba--without the Teeth. They were added by the japanese makers so it looked more like a Rambo Knife.
Very Different Times.
Micheal--Thanks for the link--It was fun to see all of it again.
Mike.............................:)
You're welcome Mike, and thanks for the input. I'm still a big fan of many of the old PC designs.
Now that you mention it, I can see the similarity in the handle.
Nice to see things are going well with Bark River.
Regards,
Mike
