I was looking in the window of our local YHA shop on the way down the Oxford this lunchtime and saw some Karrimor daysacks in the window in the sale.

Went and had a look and bought a Spirit Airspace 28 for £18 instead of £60 :yikes:

Excellent sack with adjustable back and the airspace ventilation system that keeps you from getting too sweaty and horrible

I then found out that all the YHA shops were bought by Karrimor last March and will soon be going over to the Karrimor name and the only clothes and footwaer sold will be own brand after that.

Well ..... bum! I was thinking about going to Oxford tomorrow in view of the cacky weather but seem to have made other plans. I could do with a decent outdoor gear sale, everything's wearing out!

That take over is a bummer. The YHA in Manchester used to have loads of good, hard to find gear but now they've got rid of everything good and replaced it with crappy stuff.
However, across the road is a field and trek where they've got some good kit and loads of torches including the inova x5.

Did'nt one of our members in the UK Police put up a URL to Karrimor's Police and Services Supply site a few months ago? I think it may have been Zardoz

It is just the clothing & boots that will be just Karrimor, they are going to carry on selling all the none karrimor accesories.

I'm not sure where you get the idea that Karrimor stuff is crappy however. I have several bits of Karrimor kit that are still going strong after lots of years of use (admitidly some of it intermitent) My Jaguar S bergen recently made a fishing trip to Alaska with my MD's husband and I used it for 10 years whilst in th TA (in the back of a 4 tonner mainly :D )

Roger - there is now a big Blacks in Oxford as well as all the other outdoor shops so it could be well worth a visit. The YHA shop has some excellent bargins as they clear out the non-ownbrand stuff.

Also have you been to Morris Photographic on the High Street?

They have got loads of second hand Nikon stuff in at the moment

I didn't mean that the Karrimor stuff is crap, I've got quite a few nice bits of kit from them, its just that they've got rid of all the nice gear they used to have: pre-mac filters, potable aqua and stuff like that replaced it with the sort of stuff you get in millets and blacks: heavy weight, novelty stuff. Like toast racks to go on gas stoves and leaky Chinese water bottles.

You get the idea? :yuck:

I know the guys at Karrimor and they will hold up their hands and say that some of the stuff that came out of the factory a few years ago was a bit Naff, I think that was more a case of decisions made by the company that owned them at the time. They are now regaining their reputation as manufacturers of quality kit. This year they are bringing out some good stuff, can't tell you what at the moment as I've been sworn to secrecy :(
We've been reviewing some of their stuff form a few months now and it's proving to be good kit.

I am putting the Delta 35lt through it's paces at the mo, it has become my absolute favourite small pack, it's great.

I personally prefer it over the Saber 35, it's really comfortable and rides well. I do have very thick shoulders (58"chest) it is going to another more normal sized guy soon for further reviewing but so far everyone ahs liked it. I have had no problem with the zip being exposed, in some quite foul weather that was wind driven and very heavy. The mesh side pockets are a nice size to shove stuff in, even big bottles. When I stop, or the weather turns I put all my wet stuff under the elastic mesh (which is configurable) I've also carried kinderling etc under the mesh.

Good bag :D

The 35lt Saber is also a good bag, but my choice would be the delta. More testing may change that though!

As for where to buy, I am going to talk to them soon (PRI) and I will let you know :biggthump

Hey Tony,

how has the Delta held up? I“ve been interested in all the assault packs offerd by US-companies like Eagle Industries, SOE and the like but wasn“t willing to pay about 100 quid for not much more than a beefed up Jansport/ Eastpack kind of book bag. The Delta is much richer in features like the sidepockets, elastic cord, splash-proof zip etc. One big advantage over the US bags seems to be the back ventilation, as I really suffer from SBS (sweaty back syndrome) on hot summer days and can“t stand a backpack in high temperatures.
Could you please tell me how durable the pack is, especially the main zip, how big it actually is, how well the ventilated back works and how well it would fit a smaller guy.
In addition to that I would like to know where I could purchase it and how much it costs, there is a dealer for the Karrimor military range in Germany, but he unfortunately only carries the sabre toploader models and is not willing to answer any e-mails or phone calls.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Bushyasta all that you have mentioned above such as the Ventalation, Side pockets, Elastic Cord, Splash proof Zips, are offered in the Maxpedition (www.maxpedition.com) and the Blackhawk Industry (www.blackhawkindustries.com) line of products as well.

cheers,
Joe
