I would be up for either a H230-C or a H300-C, not sure which yet, probably going to sketch out their sizes to get a feel for which would suit me best.

Again subject to cost and when the money would be required.

I'm rather alamed about the number now involved. How many of these things are made?

No idea but this does highlight the difference between group buys for low value items where a discount will be available, and a bulk buy.

If this is to be a group buy, organised by one person they are going to need to lay out well over $2000 at current numbers, and face a huge VAT and Duty bill unless *cough* other arrangements are made.

I'm not sure if this is practical on this scale, unless someone wants to open direct discussions with William Henry and point out the benefits to them of having a lot of members of the UKs only knife forum ordering in bulk from a company not normally well represented on our pages.

Danzo

MagiKelly

I may be interested in an H230-D but as with most things it will depend on price.

I suspect that depending on discount the final numbers for the group buy may be substantially less than the current list.

Andy

sorry I missed you off the list, your on it now:), I hope I've got the numbers right.
Maybe we should do something like buying one of each size and getting them shipped first and doing a few comparison shots shots to help people decide which model they want. I think a passaround would take too long but I could get hold of a large plain one and a small damacus one now

pippyd
04-07-06, 11:17 PM
That sounds like an excellent plan. Visually I prefer the smaller one (the back/butt of the handle has a nicer curve to it but I'm just not sure how it's going to fit in the hand. At least if someone has handled one I'd have a better idea. There's also matters like ease of opening, and general fit/finish that could be answered.

Another questions - the damascus one in the pics has file work on the rear piece of the tang, I'm assuming the plain blades do also but I've not found a picture yet.

Thanks, Phil

06-07-06, 09:41 AM
Guys I have had a reply and confirmation on a discount we can get

William henry wont offer any discount as part of their policy, this is fairly standard so was expected.
Dan Delavan at Plaza Cutlery is offering a15% discount though which is rather good :D
He has told me that it would cost less at that end to post in one big lot but understands that we may get hit for more taxes plus RMSD at this end so will ship them one to each person directly if we want. I think most people will want this with the basic postage and not get hit for taxes
I mentioned getting some straight away but they would need to be full price and then credit us back when we pay for the others and this would all get a bit complicated. He has offered to do some comparison shots for us though which is all we'd really get if we got some over here anyway.

Please would everyone confirm what they want ASAP

The WH site lists the Legacy as coming with a slipcase and not a clipcase. There's some photos on this Japanese site with the case in the background:

http://www.yamahide.com/factory/wh/legacy.htm

Alternatively you can probably persuade the dealer to sell you one of the other cases:

I think I'll be paying for everything in one go but maybe people will pay direct

If we(I) need to pay for everything in one go that I will give prices in GBP, this will have to allow for slight changes in exchange rates and any fees involved in internatinal bank transfers (which I'm investigating this afternoon)

I've just "made" replica cutout models. Well I printed out the WH knife pics to real life size.

I've cut them out and I'm now playing around with them to see which one feels better :) Not exactly cutting edge but I'm hoping it will give me an idea as I'm worried the 230 will feel too small and on the flip side the 300 might be a little longer than I would like for a gents pocket folder.

Phil

Andy
06-07-06, 05:26 PM
the H300 models have the same blade and overall size (give a take a few mm) as a mini grip. They are slightly smaller the a small sebenza. I am going to ask for pics of them next to these knives as I think most people will have handled these.
I'm going for a H300-C I think. I'll also be getting a clip case as this will be my EDC:)

Ha, amateur. The Insect Netting group buy on BCUK was for just under £4000 and saved over £6000 on the cost of the total purchases at non- group buy prices. Don't even start me on the savings from the 300 hammocks that have been brought in. Still you are only a boy, once you are older you can come play with the big boys :P

Andy.

Many thanks for organising this.

I've decided on a H300C if you could put me down for one and a clip case in brown if the cases are available.

Until the official size comparison piccies arrive here's my rather bad print out models :)

Left to Right.

Benchmade 551 Grip, Opi No.8, Al Mar Falcon, WH H300, WH H230, Spydie Dragonfly, Leatherman Juice.

I need a disclaimer from everyone saying that they are happy for me to have the knife sent to them via USPS global priority which has no insurence or tracking and will not hold either myself or plaza cutlery responsable if a knife goes missing

If you aren't happy with this postage method I'll try and sort something out for you but it will cost you a lot more.

Incase people hadn't checked plaza cutlery site the basic postage to the UK costs $13. I think people with two knives will still pay $13 but it may need to go in two packages. There is also the small bank charge fee to cover me sending him the money. It's much less then doing a load of credit card transactions though

Andy, I think I'm going to have to skip this one. By my calculations the cost of the H300 in vanilla is about £81 depending on the exchange rate.
Great as that price looks, I'm in the process of buying a house & if I spend that on a knife right now I'll likely be divorced before I can say the word! :D

Andy - I've just seen Phil's pics of the life sized paper cutouts. Can I change up to H300-D please. I think the 230 will be too small. Shame as I prefer the style of the smaller handle.
I'd still like a black clip case to suit.

Thanks.

Well If I can find the extra funds . . just spent about 150 quid fixing our car. WQe had a problem, no electric windows, and no air conditioning. So for the last 2 months we have been driving our car with no AC and no power windows, so basically real close to 40C + in our car. I got tired of in and finally got it fixed. Tired of holding the car door open while driving down the street :( But yes what I ordered is correct, just need a good lotto win :(

Oh and Plaza Cutlery is good peeps.

I noticed Dan Delavan, owner of Plaza Cutlery showed up as a new member the other day, so he probably came over to see exactly wtf was going o with us wacky Brits :D

I've sent an emailing asking if we can sort out the knives which have been confirmed and maybe sort out the others if those people confirm in time. I'm waiting to see what deal we can have on the cases and will also need to find out if his bank will make further charges on top of the ones from my bank (my bank has told be it shouldn't if I send in $UD. The women behind the desk did in the end work out that the amount needed to be same amount of USD no matter what the exact exchange rate was (and this doesn't get processed on the day I fill the form in). Also it should be noted that the exchange rate the bank gives isn't the same as you'll find on XE, at least not when you sending less then £30,000. It's not a huge amount difference but it is there

the ones in bold are being orderd, The numbers have been sent to WH but are being re fixed on thursday so get in quickly.
prividing there is no charge on Dans end for recieving the bank trasnfer (which my bank said was unlikely this is an estimated price list. This includes postage to the UK, the bank charges at my end and has a small amount extra in the event that the exchange rate goes against us (even a small change with this many would end up costing me a fair amount extra. The prices do not include any paypal fees if you want to pay using that
H230-C 3 £85
H230-D 6 £139
H300-C 6 £91
H300-D 6 £151
H300-CB 2 £102

I'm still waiting for a definate price on the sheaths
I'm hoping that CirclePknives can pay directly and I assume will have a slightly reduced postage cost
Cones (and if the other person wanting two confirms) you can knock off £7.20 if he's to send both knives in one package

dam, their aren't any 230-CBs involved. I'll edit it to say 300-CB

paypal fees are amount+20P then times by 1.034
I will PM my home address for cheques and my paypal address when I'm ready to take payments

william henry are reserving all the confirmed orders for US. As I'm poping away for a few days I wont be able to start cashing any cheques till I get back. The bank trasfer will also take time but I'm hoping I can get that underway before the cheques have cleared. Alternatively we could stay put a few days to see if the currency rate starts to swing back in our favour...

Andy
14-07-06, 12:25 PM
the trouble is the transfer goes at the rate the day after I fill the form is as the details are posted to the main branch. The manager said there was no way to get round this but a desk staff bloke told me of banks that might give me better rates in town. I'll check around, I'm sure I'll sort something

even with the low rate it's still slightly better then a credit card would give and we're having a greater discount as Dan wont have fees at the other end then if we all paid by credit card.

What about a Nation Wide Credit Card?
As there are no exchange fees on them.

a credit card takes 2.5% from the trasaction like paypal does so the dealer in the US doesn't get as much (part of the reson we got 15% off was that he didn't have those fees)
A typical credit card will give you less USD per pound as it's normaly for a small amount
I esitmated 1.8USD per pound but it was at 1.74 last time I checked.
at the time XE was giving 1.84 something and now that's gone down to 1.83something

15-07-06, 01:53 AM
From my dodgy maths it works out at £10-20 more each which means up to £480 more for Andy (OUCH!). Payday for me is in just over a week so if someone is willing to cover me till then or buy my Spderco progrip, be my guest :) Alternatively, I'll go down a blade size if that's possible. Things are likely to change currency wise in the very near future because of current international issues.

Andy
15-07-06, 05:47 AM
I'm going to have to email Dan at Plaza to let him know things might be changing

sorry guys I don't know what to do about this

at the moment it' not as bad as 480pounds difference though. rough guess you can times the price I gave by 1.8 and divide by 1.73. I'm hoping that natwest dropped their rates a little bofore elsewher as it still seems fairly stable. I can't transfer this amount of money with other methods that I've found so far and they charge double per transfer anyway (limit of 500pounds)

manganr
15-07-06, 08:23 AM

Don't get me wrong, the dealer in the US has been informative, You guys have all paid quickly and I haven't had to spend ages working out who sent which paypal payments (which I normaly do). It's just that I think we all thought that the prices in the UK would be far higher then they are and though we're saving money from the RRP in the UK we could have delt with a UK shop and had far less hassel with sending them money. I've done a international purchase for a group buy before but the amount of money involved was much less and I used paypal which makes it easier for me to know what the currency conversion is

Just had an email form Dan saying the payment is now pending so should go through tomorrow. I don't know if the knives have arrived at Plaza yet but do know that WH were meant to be sending them earlier this week. With a bit of luck these can be posted out by thursday (I don't know what time the bank put's it into Dans account)
these could be here this time next week

PS this group buy is saving about $1000 off the RRP of the products being bought in the US

it seems WH missed the email asking them to ship these to Dan, He's going to ohone them when it gets to morning over there (it's been fun working out the best times to email each other with this buy). I think we're now looking at the end of the week before they get to Dan

right, Dan and I have sorted out a couple of mistakes in address (or sorted out addresses which were a bit odd) He is labeling the envolopes before the knives arrive so that they can be processed a lot quicker (hopefully the same day)
This means they should be shipped by late friday (his time).
with a bit of luck we will have them in time for people to show them off at the upcoming meet up. I'm free that day but might not be able to arrange transport, if I'm there I and have my knife by then I will also bring the Strider GB which has been kindly donated by strider and plaza cutlery to aid in funding this forum

With my usual speed of thought and action, I missed out on this.

So I contacted Dan at Plazza, who told me that he would honour the discounted price given to Andy and the group buy for anyone from BB who still wanted a Wm Henry. I have gone for a H300-CB (a large black bladed one), at a shipped price of $179 (£95).

So, if like me you missed out first time around.....
