As many know, one can carry one or more knives about thier person in public if it is part of a national costome. Does this apply to Skean Dhu / Sgian Dubh? Could someone with Scottish heritage walk around Scotland and I would imagine the rest of the UK with a fixed blade in thier stocking provided they wore what would also be considered a Scottish national costume as well?

I noticed that, when somebody poste dthe relevant legal text a while ago...

Good reason for carry includes "as part of a national costume" but the law does not mention that the wearer be a member of the nation, whose costume he is wearing... Which makes me wonder what our worships would say when some Cornish gentleman is up for "wearing a skirt and carrying a pointy thing", and presents the Scottish national dress as being a "good reason for carry"...

Or if I were to walk around dressed as a Finn, with a nice Iisaakin puukko hanging on my belt.

Prince Charles you mean Stony? If your old man is Duke of Edinburgh and your mum Queen of Scotland then you have a bit of a headstart on the rest of us.......

:D

.......his Grandma was an actual Scot though, wasn't she?

He can claim Crown Immunity from prosecution anyway.

I've never heard of anything that requires the person wearing the kilt/turban/etc to prove that they are of that heritage/religion etc etc. I would imagine the onus would be on the Crown to prove that they weren't, rather than the person to prove that they were but I may be wrong.
Not too many people up here wear a kilt everyday though.......bit cold and shrinkage can occur, if you know what I mean...........

Do you think that a judge or magistrate could rule out the defence of "national costume", on the grounds (for instance) that since I'm not a Scot, I shouldn't be wearing a kilt and sghian dubh?

"Even though it is not written into the letter of the law, the intention of the legislator was to limit the national dress to member of the nation in question....."

Which goes back to the idea of "what knife woul be part of the English national costume"?

I thought his grandma was a German... but then, I'm wrong about so many things after ten O'clock...

Why would he want to claim crown immunity? Princess Anne didn't... and he wouldn't want to be outdone by her, would he?

And it all goes to show what a :censored: stupid law we are talking about! Now I'm pretty sure my lead mining ancestors must have carried a knife, or shall I do Robin Hood and take my longbow and a fist full of arrows out as well :)

Did Parliment mean current national costume or from any era, would a Japanese person with samurai ancestory be able to walk about in woolworths with a Katana and Wazashi tucked into their sashi, would an English person be able to take a shield and broadsword on the train to Waterloo, would a native American be able to carry a tomahawk and obsidian dagger in Bournmouth?

I think your spot on with that Shing. The only problem would be if the judge asked what was the reason for wearing the traditional dress.
Well you honour I was carrying the 6 foot flencing knife coz I'm related to the Norwegian whaling crews. Oh yes and I killed my wife coz since we got married she put on 100 pounds and it was just my native instinct cutting in http://www.marinethemes.com/aasearchfiles/Whaling/images/WLG%2047595.jpg

Any time I wear a kilt (basically any formal occasion not work related that I might wear a suit) I wear a sgian dubh and a dirk. never had any problems with the police even in England. Never been asked if I'm on the way to anywhere special (most probably assume wedding). Never been asked if I'm Scottish although the accent would be a bit of a giveaway! The sheeple tend not to even notice and I get more adverse comments about the dead otter I'm using as a sporran than I do about the dirk (which is basically a shortsword)!

The time you will see most kilts in Scotland is in Edinburgh for the rugby. The laugh is going into a pub and the bouncer collects the cutlery and puts it behind the door. The really amusing bit is when you collect it on the way out. To a passer by whole piles of inebriated Scots are being issued with weapons on the way out of bars! God knows what the Japanese and American tourists are thinking. "Oh look dear, do you think they are all of to invade England again" :D

Right, thanks. That's put that one to bed, then.

I seem to remember somthing in the press a few years ago about someone being in court for carrying a large sword, he stated his reason as being belife in the Norse gods and he needed his sword at all times to ensure passage to Valhalla, can anyone remember how that one turned out?

I seem to remember a gentleman who called himself 'King Arthur'...used to always be dressed up in period costume including wearing a long large sword on his side..

Last I heard he was in prison.

Anyone know who I am talking about?...he was well known in the Newbury area especialy a few years ago during the Nexbury by-pass demonstrations?

Danzo

Why confused?

If I remember rightly, it goes like this:

When the Turks finally left Greece, the European Powers had to find a King for them from somewhere, and some Danish prince was judged to be "one most likely to be it". Anyway, his name was George, or smething, that could be easily passed off as Giorgios.

Anyway, all the Crowned Heads of Europe are cousins. I think a fair sized chunk of the Spanish royal family are Thyssens (I used to by steel from them).
