View Full Version : Meet-up in Coventry - 5th August

Stephen63
11-07-06, 02:58 PM
I have managed to secure the use of a good venue in Coventry for a combined Warwickshire/West-Midlands and EMCCU meet-up to be held on Saturday 5th August, probably from 12 till 5 or 6 o'clock.

However, as the venue is a room in a private social club I have been asked not to publish the address where it is visible to the general public.

So if you are interested in coming then please drop me a PM and I'll send you the address.

Cheers,

Tough choice, in the South of France with that lovely lady of yours, or in Coventry with us lot........

Why don't you organise a meet-up then you can be sure it wont be when you're away.

Mik,

You would be more than welcome.

The East Midlands Cutlers and Collectors Union is a name that's used by various East Midlands based BB members when booking meet-up venues. To date there have been 4 meet-ups (strangely all in pubs) in Nottingham (Danzo), Sheffield (Andy), Chesterfield (RoganJ) and Wirksworth (Dtalbot).

Despite the East Midlands part of the name attendees have come from as far afield as Northumbria, Manchester, and South Wales and have represented the broad range of BB from makers to collectors.

Mik,

PM on it's way to you.

Bring yourself and any knives that you would want to show others, whether you have made them, or someone else did, or they are production models. They're a lot of people who haven't seen William Henry's for example....

SWMBO has decided to stay at home with the kids so there's a few seats spare. If anyone in the Derby/Notts area would like a lift there and back, they are more than welcome.

Only thing to be aware of is that SWMBO has a total ban on smoking in the car.

I am hoping (really hoping!) to keep up my 100% attendance record for EMCCU meets. However, due to various factors, my life is total chaos at the moment so it's not certain.

That said, if anyone from the Chesterfield / Matlock / South Sheffield areas wants to talk about car sharing I would be interested in hearing from you. I will probably be driving down and will have 3 spare seats.

Tiffers, you do realise that as my appointed representative you will have to drink about fifteen pints of real ale, complain about the buffet, sell a perfectly good knife worth £40 to that Demonic Youth, Lemoneylad, for a fiver, buy something for about £150 that you hadn't anticipated, and all in all have a bl**dy good time?

What a hoot!! To those of you I hadnt met before, it was brilliant to put some more faces to the names! There were some fabulous knives on show from everyone plus some rather dazzling torches from Cones :D

I guess it had to happen, after winning 2 knives recently I had to top it off with winning a rather superb Aly Napier knife :D This does of course mean those in the Kevin Wilkins folder passaround are safe as things happen in 3's and it appears I've had my 3 :D

Dave Budd wasnt there unfortunately but some of his knives were and I managed to pick up an interesting kiridashi/skiver style knife which will be spot on for my toolbox (though its almost too pretty!). I also added a rather superb Shing knife to the collection :D Pictures to follow later!

It was a fantastic relaxed atmosphere with plenty of room to spread out. Lots of chatter followed the buffet (I didnt realise Guy could move as fast as he did when the food arrived!) and there was lots of laughter and good times :)

The thought did cross my mind, next time we do one of these, perhaps we should all head out for a meal in the early evening? It would top it off nicely!

Many thanks to Stephen and his wife, they did a superb job :)

Might be up for organising another one in Wirksworth sometime later in the year. There is a good european eatery just across the road, a rather nice Chinese resteraunt about 5miles east of here and a good balti about the same distance north so Tiffers suggestion could be a plan.

I think everyone had a good time, it was nice to see everyone and the room was great the transport police commented that my bag looked heavy on the way home, just glad they didn't ask why.

it's not often a woman tells me to get it wet, stick it in and wiggle it about a bit even less often when leather and cling film is involved but I will follow the advice and hopefully my leather pouch will fit the knife a better after

My thanks to Mr & Mrs 63 for organising the meeting and the food, not to mention the fixed raffle where four out of five slips of paper in the bowl had Tiffer's name on! :D Joking, of course, the prize couldn't have gone to a nicer person :)

It was great to meet up with those who attended, I got to see a lot of fascinating things that I wouldn't ordinarily see, such as a grown man leaving smoke trails as he crosses the room to reach the buffet. The chance to talk with some makers was fantastic - lots of things that I had seen on paper made a lot more sense when they were right there in front of me. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to you all!

Special thanks to Shing and Andy for keeping me laughing all the way up, and also Shing for showing me what a proper workshop should look like! Oh, and some nice bits of material to play with :D

Mr and Mrs Stephen63, thanks very much for a very good day! ;)

Good company, venue and food, interesting displays and I won a very nice blade. Just adapted an old sheath for it and we're now 'cooking on gas'! 8)

Special mention for 'Gadgeteer in Chief' Cones' display of portable, hand held tanning devices. They are BRIGHT :X

Also for Tiffers' leather work. I'm EXTREMELY impressed Tiffers ;)

Fine day all round.

Oohh, I forgot to say, the venue for this meet-up was superb with tons of space. It was easy to get to and the drinks were very reasonably priced :)

If there was another meet up at this location I'd definately go along. It took 2.5 hours to get there from way down here in the south and just 2 hours to get back.

If there is a next time I'll look at filling my car up with any other BB'ers from down south.

Now I think some people may have mistaken my appreciation of Mrs63's buffeteering skills as selfish gluttony...simply not true:rolleye11 I was just a little peckish :D

Had another good meet and it was great to meet some new faces, Mik, Graham, Rouge, Chris, BanjoBill, (lovely to meet you all), as well as those more familiar.

Thanks to Stephen for doing the organising and for getting an excellent venue, much appreciated.

Shing, please don't ever get the urge to post on BB after a few Guiness, I've a funny feeling you might get :mad33: ;) :D

A few hasty photos...

Andy (known for his social faux pas's) is saying, "if I close my eyes, your Sebbie feels like a cheap Ebay knockoff." :|

I'm glad that everyone actually enjoyed themselves as much as I thought.

Mrs 63 has, however, asked me to point out that despite all of the comments Guy was not the first to the buffet - he was beaten to it by Cones who snuck in before him, even if he wasn't seen to be running acrooss the room!
