View Full Version : what fits in a spy capsule?

I carry a small spy capsule on my keyring with a folded and rolled up £20 note inside. It only just fits. I have several other large and small spy capsules but havent actually come up with a good use for them. Anything I want to put inside is either too big or cant be removed again without tweezers/pliers or gets damaged or there is so little of it that its not worth it.
The money is usefull but does anyone here use them for anything else?
I gleefully bought 4 spy capsules a while back and then thought... hmmm, what to put in them? I tried squeezing some Neurofen into one but to no avail...
I keep one in my bag with some trimmed down Swan Vestas, but this has turned out to be a little superfluous as I always have a Brunton Helios, Large Swedish Fire Steel and a minature Magnesium/Firesteel in my bag...
I always thought the idea of keeping money in one was a good idea, but sadly I'm far too broke to leave paper money untouched in a spy capsule right now... :(
Hopefully someone will come up with some cool suggestions... :D

I have a tiny own brand spy capsule with a rolled piece of thick birch bark inside. But then, my pockets are always full of papery birch bark, so it’s kind of pointless. Vaseline cotton balls would fit, but getting them out WILL be a hassle. If you have a SAK with tweezers, it's not so bad though.
Hmmm what else...
Matches? Capsule type Bruphen/Cocodamol? Needle&Thread? Silver foil?
Would a small Ziploc bag fit in the bigger capsule?

I assume you want to carry a rolled up empty zip lock bag? The seal takes up a lot of room so you have to roll it up and put it in with the strip lengthways. Therefore bag size limited to a seal length slightly smaller than the capsule length. Not huge.
medication wise my parter needs painkillers a lot. asprin/codeine mix round tablets fit into the larger capsule. You can get about a dozen in there with some cotton wool at the top to stop ratteling. Tablets do eventually break up though and expiry date would be effected. Also one tablet type only to stop cross contamination. OK for her as she only takes one type and she will always have them. (I've never met anyone who gets breaks, dislocations and sprains so often).
For the rest of us I would recomend using blister packed tablets cutting out each blister to save space and putting some masking tape on the foil to protect it (bursts easily) and using an indelible pen to mark on active ingredient and dose. Caplets fit but pill shape doesnt. The bigger caplets like cocodamol only fit with a large amount of wasted space. Seems a shame to carry a large capsule and only get 2 tablets in it. I currently carry 2 50mg tramadol (prescription analgesic), 2 10mg antihistamine and 1 200mg ibuprofen (couldnt fit a 400 mg). Tried carrying a 30/500 cocodamol but too large to get more than one other tablet in there
Hmm... I've always thought they look sexy in a 'nice engineering' sort of way, but I think my suspicions that they are a solution looking for a problem are being confirmed :)

I carry an "emergency standby" EUR50 note and a US$100 note slipped inside a shoe or somewhere in my clothing.
I use my spy capsule for carrying around very small spies.

Totally agree. Maybe someone will have just the right problem and then they'll be perfect.

I love those! I found a supplier of Chivers mincemeat, and got my wife and son making them this Chrismas just gone. Excellent!
Every year, I'm tempted to make some proper mince pies, from spiced lamb and dried fruit. A bit like what that bloke did in River Cottage. Maybe next year...
But for my money, Secret Squirrel takes some beating.

How about storage for spare small screws such as found on many folders that might work loose (pocket clip screws etc.)

My cat has a spy capsule that she carries around her neck. I know it contains location directions to the best cat food and rest place in town.
The easy way to get things out of a SC is to tie a bit of dental floss in a loop and push it in with the goodies you want to get out. you just then pull the dental floss and it all comes out. Of course the dental floss gets used more often than the goodies.
It just occured to me that a true spy capsule would be secreted up ya jacksie so really the size of the capsule is directly proportionate to the orafice it has to locate in. No pain no gain. It might be said that some politicians might even get away with a short wave radio, 20, woodbines and half a pound of jelly babies in case of emergencies.

What fits in a spy capsule - a Mercury capsule?

those yellow plastic kinder egg things are waterproof (so long as you don't stand on them) - and are big enough to put things in - cash, codeine, dax - and the other useful things .. like, erm ... well fishing line, and um .. string and ... cheese, yes cheese would go in, and .. nailclippings and dunkies and matches (if you made them a bit shorter and dipped them in wax) .. er, map of central london/tube ..

Chia seeds, as hunger depressants, enough for maybe three days?
Sugar in one, Potasium Permangenate ( Condys crystals) in another one, mix both for fire lighting with sparks, but will spontaneously combust after a while...And of course, the pot perm can be used for water purifying, and the sugar for tea, coffee...
Whiskey...
Fire lighting liquid of your choice...
Cordite from old .303 cartridges...
No one else keep their cyanide pellets in there then?

How bizarre, that is almost exactly what I keep in mine! I have the permanganate in one and some glycerin (just the stuff for sore throats) in the other. Both are available from Boots but you get much more permanganate for your money from smaller chemists.
For God's sake don't put them in the same container... POP... burn, shrapnel, OW.:C
The delay before ignition is temperature dependent so if the capsules have been in a warm pocket you may not get long. Burns bright purple. If you pour it down a short length of dried cow-parsley you have a rudimentary (and short-lived) flare.
As Zackerty mentioned, the KMnO4 (pot. permanganate) can be used to purify water (caution) and also makes a fine (temporary) dye. It can also be used to tan hide.
Thinking about it, sugar might be more useful than the glycerin! I just didn't think it would ignite spontaneously.
Potass permag, glycerine, iron filings I think these were the ingredients I used to make smoke bombs some 40 +yrs ago when I was a wee nipper.

Too true, I carried an ali spy capsule on one of my sets of keys, unopened for about, perhaps 18 months or so....
How glad was I one day for the score note that allowed me to pay for half of the messages at morrisons when I'd forgotten my wallet! ;)

I've managed to get a tenner into one spy capsule, it's a shame that it won't quite take a tenner and a fiver together. I don't like twenty pound notes and rarely accept them from anyone but perhaps I'll see if the next one I get will fit into a spy capsule. Ideal for all those times I go out without a wallet.

Why not keep stolen blueprints of Western Technology on rolled up microfilm in your Spy Capsule?
Takes up very little space and is a negotiable currency.

Why don't you like twenty pound notes Rog? I know of a Scottish lad who will dispose of any unwanted ones that you stumble across for only the price of a first class stamp! :D
Wanted to get another spycapsule, and wondered if the technology had changed or improved at all in the aeon since this thread started?
Anyone know a good source? Went to look in EDCDepot, but it was shut for the day :)

Oooo! Battery holders too :). Just need some 200lb OG nylon cord now
Type IIA paracord? Why so specific, if I may ask... curious minds are curious.
Edit:
Looking at the table here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parachute_cord
Seems Type IIA is just Type III (550) with the core strands stripped out, essentially.
IS that stuff called tether cord? Not quite what I am after. I'll take a pic of a bit of what I have and see if we can figure out the proper name for it. Though my guess it is just some kind of static line
Ah that maybe Type 1 then.

(The foam type you rol up & expand in your ears. Stops me going deaf at gigs when I forget the proper moulded ones)

I was wondering about the string :) you get with with things like compact cameras. Thin and strong. I've never known what it was called, so I've never bought any. Tried dental floss. Failed. Is this the stuff? Can't tell from the photos.

No, those two are a lot thicker, the thinner one is about the thickness of a pencil lead or a match.

Could that be the Kevlar string (http://www.survivaldepot.co.uk/Kevlar__Survival_Cord/p474753_3808532.aspx) or something similar??

The other option might Spectra thread. (http://www.survivaldepot.co.uk/SPECTRA__THREAD_FROM_MARATAC_/p474753_5791310.aspx) Worth handling some of this with a degree of care though. I used spectra lines when I was flying big kites and I remember someone losing a couple of fingers very cleanly when he went to grab a kite line just as it was picked up by the wind. The line looped round his fingers and just ran straight through them. Just be careful as you're pulling it up tight ;)
Back on the spy capsule thing for a moment - I know True Utility aren't generally the go-to company for quality kit, but their particular flavour is definitely big enough for ibuprofen. I have a few other versions bought subsequently - either from ******* as cheap versions, or one 'proper' spy capsule as a quality version - and none have quite as large internal diameters. The True Utility option holds four quite merrily, padded out with some tissue paper of forgotten provenance. Possibly an antiquated Rizla...

You wouldn't have thought something that's used so much would be so obscure.
