Seize him!

Never mind...

Just saw a mention of this over on Bladeforums:

Instead of scribing a line, then centre punching to drill a bunch of holes for a guard slot, use a cold chisel. Instant centre-punched line (assuming you haven't knackered your cold chisel edge previously...)

A pillar drill with a mill vice? You don't like your drill very much, do you?
Granted, the side load on milling brass is not as bad as steel, but even so - ooh, me bearings!

OK, perhaps I should amend that to "assuming one does not have access to a full-on CNC-capable machine shop..."

ummm the pillar drill isn't used for milling . the vice is used to control piece being drilled so instead of controlling with a centre punch, you drill, adjust and drill again. No sideways pressure ......... the full on CNC shop is at work :D ... which i can also use :p

Beating this thread with a large stick until it wanders on-topic again -

Even using the vice, centre punching remains in the category of "good idea". Cause otherwise, with all the will in the world, your drills are likely to wander.

I gave up on the drill/cross slide routine years ago, too much chatter. I bought a cheap(moderately inexpensive) table top mill to do guards.

Could use stub drills and a filing jig, cheaper than a mill

Good tip peter, even with a scribed line to follow, it's very difficult to get your centers perfectly aligned. I'll definitely try this one (eventually). :)

I bought a second pillar drill for milling wood, micarta and such, at £30 for the drill, I figured if the bearings went - I'd just get another drill. ;)

I havent used it a lot for that, but what little I've done (in wood) seems to have worked well with little or no ill effect. Of course milling steel would likely kill it a lot quicker.
