Hi All,
Well once I've finished off the blanks Shing gave me to play with I'll be onto my first start from scratch project.
I've got a lenght of EN42 for it about 35mm x 225mm x 3.3mm. Looking down the length of it there is a gentle bend over the middle half leaving the far end about 3mm out of true.
How do I go about straightening this out and at what stage in the project?
Thanks
David

David,
starighten it out now, for the purposes of, well, starightness
:D & ease of having a straight bit of steel to work with (to tell you the truth, Shing sent me some & it's bent too:bloody****'sdoingitonpurposei'msure::p)
It'll bend during HT anyway, just deal with it in the normal way:)

get it straight before you start grinding it, a bent blank is difficult to grind accurately. you can put it between two bits of wood and pressing down in the middle or use a G clamp. By the way, got some 4mm EN42 today yum!
thats bent too, straightening steel is just another skill we budding knife makers have to learn, I have yet to come across a piece of blade steel that is straight, even if you start out straight after sawing and filing to get blade blank shape its usually bent anyway.

Though so, its now clamped to try and straighten it.

Thanks,
Somthing similar to the second principal applied with hands, a bit of wood and the kitchen floor in the end and now it is pretty straight.
Cheers
David
