What socks do you guys use when out in the wilds? I generally use Bridgdales, but I have a pair of Brashers and for wet stuff I have some Sealskinz.

How about you lot?

Smartwool (a US company) are simply the best - 100% merino wool, super tough yet luxuriously soft. they are just about the most expensive socks around though if bought in the UK (the old $/£ rip off... )

i got my wife to buy me EIGHT pairs of them when she was in the US a couple of years ago :approve:

I got 20 pairs of timberland wool socks at designer outlet village.
worked out at £2 a pair. due to this multiple promotion thing they had going, combined it with a £400 leather laptop/brief case that I got for £50 Now I love deals like that however each promo I have seen since have excluded the socks

Do the smartwool socksmake you itch?

Emphatically not! :D

The wool is super soft and non-irritating - so much so that Smartwool and other companies are now producing highly successful lines of underwear made out of merino wool - superior to any synthetic fabrics - wicks superbly, warm when wet and doesn't pong to high heaven even after a few days of wear! some of my synthetic tops stink abysmally even after a few hours of wear.... so much so that i sometimes think that they should go in an incinerator instead of the washing machine :yikes:

All sorts of Bridgedales for me. I've had some of them ages now and they are really lasting well.

Quote from a Trail magazine gear review this month:

Re Smartwool Aerobic Lightweight Baselayer - "On a mountaineering trip to the Alps, I didn't wash this for two weeks and it didn't whiff. No, really! That's down to the stink-free qualities of Merino wool. Since then it's been everywhere with me..."

And if any of you buy or are thinking about buying Trail magazine please be aware that I suspect that many of their "gear reviews" are not field tests but merely observations based on examinations of the gear in their office! They do carry out some proper field tests but these tend to be on individual items. Beware of the major gear "reviews" of eg dozens of waterproof jackets - i could put together something similar just by compiling data from the variuous company's web sites...

It's an OK magazine but not exactly high-brow stuff....

going to get "off-thread" here but it will hopefully be worth it...

i saw a documentary a year or so ago about an all-male yacht crew on a round the world race. the boats are extremely high-tech - every gram counts so the crews, had a tiny allowance for personal luggage....

one of the guys obviously took great pride in explaining how he managed to get one pair of underpants to last 4 months without a wash.... one month worn as normal/next month worn the wrong way round/next 2 months as before but with the pants turned inside-out :notworthy

Washing clothes on a yacht/boat/ship is not a problem.
tie the clothes on a long rope , throw them overboard astern and let them trail behind...the agitation cleans them up well.

As for 'socks. (keeping it on topic)....Bridgedales and Brashers.....but with nylon tights underneath :)

Do the smartwool socksmake you itch?

Nope they certainly don't.

I have used these daily for about three months and they are the best socks I have ever had. Believe me I have had a few and these are the best.

Bit pricey but you do get what you pay for.

I use my old Army issue socks (they are about 70% wool 30% nylon IIRC) and they are excellent socks.

You only get issued a couple of pairs but somehow I have ended up with a dozen or so pairs ;) (actually you could just go to the stores and buy a few pairs at about £1.50/pair and they took it off your pay)

Another vote for smartwool here. :biggthump Generally, I hate wool, it drives me nuts - fair skin and all that, but these dont itch one bit. I was very skeptical, but am a convert to merino wool now, without doubt.
