Yes, they do wire... If they have it in stock, if they remember to ship it, if they don't lose the order... Used them a couple of years back for some Ti wire jewellry I was playing with. Naff service. YMMV.

Your Mileage May Vary.

I've used this lot (http://www.cooksongold.com/) with success in the past. You may like to compare their prices of stirling silver wire with the 99.9% pure stuff that Scientific Wires do...

I did see some silver tube that looks interesting for mosaic pins

You could put a square tbe insode a round tube, like some of the mosaic pins sold by Brisa.

The question of square pins (and square holes) has come up before, either here or on re.knives. You could start by drilling one or four round holes, and filing and/or sawing to a square hole. Or you could punch out a square hole, if you've got access to a die-stamping machine.

However, I wonder if it is wise to use a square hole. Would this cause "stress risers" (a term I've seen with regard to the blade/tang area) around the corners of the hole?

if you had access to a morticer .. you could easily have square holes, other wise you are down to drilling the hole in the scales and then chiseling them to shape with a small chisel .. same with the metal tang .. drill and file, you'll be at it a while

Well, it looks like wires.co.uk has lived down to its poor reputation. It's a month on and still no sign of a delivery.

I should've listened to Peter and steered clear.

did they email u ?
when i bought my iron wire i got an email saying they tried 2 deliver the day after i orderd but couldnt because i wasnt home , the goods arrived the next day.

perhaps they dont stock all of there catalog on a regular basis which is concerning coz i want some brass wire off them soon.

1.5mm silver wire 1m; 0.8mm silver wire 1m; 1mm square silver wire 1m; brass wire 6m

They say they posted on the 24th Feb regular airmail. No duties at this end and no reason for my order to be held up. They did offer to subsidise the price of a replacement order, but the total order was 23 pounds inc 3 pounds airmail so not worth the aggro.

Originally from Darkest Peru. I arrived in the UK at Paddington Station with a jar of marmalade and a pair of wellies. I was adopted by the Brown family and lived for a number of years at 32 Windsor Gardens, London.

Now I live and work around Asia. Normally post takes 4-7 days from the UK and 7-9 from the USA.

Nah, not worth the grief for 23 quid. My main purpose in buying the wire was for pique-work and I am going to be using gems till I get the skill down pat. Setting gems with cement in a hole is far easier than peening a silver pin, so that is going to be my first step. Also, I'll be doing a random pattern, so I can get used to drilling in mother of pearl before I allempt precision drilling in the stuff.

Well, now that I've found a local supplier and bought my replacement order there, the order from Scientific Wire showed up. Having charged me 3 pounds P&P, they only bothered to put 60p in stamps on the envelope.

On the back was this helpful message:

Royal Mail

The sender didn't pay enough Airmail postage on this item, so we had to divert it to an alternative service - sorry if there was a delay.

Evidently, the 'alternative service' was Punishment Class, involving it's being dragged across the Asian Steppes by a geriatric tortoise called Geoffrey.

I hope you have given Scientific Wire a particularly hard stare.
