I'm looking for someone to do a little bit of hardening for me. I have a piece of tool steel which I need hardening. It needs to be quenched to about 40 degrees C. It doesn't matter if it warps, breaks or cracks.
Help please.

Simon,
What steel is it exactly? (if you got it from an engineering works or supplier, they will know)
Is it a knife, or going to be used for cutting, if so, what?
If not, what is it going to be used for?
These & more questions need to be answered for anyone to undertake the task really.

I don't know exactly what steel it is, the piece in question is a knackered Bosch power carver cutting tool. I want it as a flint striker hence I dont care if it warps or breaks.

Simon,
If you've ground it to the required shape?
Have you actually tried to strike a spark from a flint yet?
You may be pleasantly surprised;)

as long as you kept the tool cool while reworking it ...... it should already be hardened.

I did try striking a spark from it and no joy. It does need hardening now cos a dumb a*** house mate, used it as a barbacue poker. Why I dont know as its only 3" long and left it in the fire and its now a prety blue/purple colour.
