View Full Version : Nottingham Meetup: January 6th
Hi folks
The EMCCU will be holding the first meetup of 2007 in Nottingham at the 'Lincolnshire Poacher' on Mansfield Rd:
http://www.pub-explorer.com/notts/pub/lincolnshirepoachernottingham.htm
The pub and the room are are available from 10.00am until well into the evening. Some beer is likely to be drunk.
We will be having our normal activities of drinking beer, eating buffets and talking about all the knives we bring along, but we also have a special event this meetup: our send off for Guycep who will be joining the the Royal Marines two days later.
Without Guy the EMCCU simply wouldn't exist as he made it so easy for us to have our first meetup. If Guy had not found us such a good venue on the first occasion then I don't think we'd be doing this now. His superb knives have also provided prizes for our raffles and a present for a special little girl.
All are welcome and please sign up below. Copy and paste if you know how, if not just post your name.
:sign20:

I'll be there. :)
Is there any car parking at the pub?
Thanks
Mark
I'm up for it.
Seeing as the beer's good I'll also be looking at getting a train in to Nottingham or walking from there.
Cheers, Phil
Is there any car parking at the pub?
No, but the Victoria Centre car park is only about two hundred yards from the pub.

Need to work out where the kids are but provisionally yep from me and Emp (if the pub will let her in!)
The pub will let her in, mate, no worries. The pub cats sat on my table as I was reading the paper, and ate some food from an evident regulars dinner plate. It's that sort of pub.
:D
I have enquired about getting a cake in the shape of Guy but it seems there isn't enough marzipan in the East Midlands to cover it......

Danzo
Dictated from a sick bed: "Thank's very much mate, I only had two young nurses looking after me too. I'm not too bad, just throbs like bl**dy hell (I let him swear at this point :D ). I'll definitely be there in Nottingham too. Bring some bargains :] "
The hospital took Debs to one side and said, for 12 years old they were amazed at his pain threshold actually as it's such a bad break. He's using his 'Rugby Mentality' to cope I think. He was asking me if collar bones were a regular thing to break on a Rugby field! He plays Tighthead at school.
His 'hero' is Laurence Dallaglio and he wants to know if he's ever broken his!!
He doesn't know it'll be at least 3 months before he can play again. He'll be gutted.
We're hoping the fracture clinic tomorrow don't recommend it being pinned as he'll need an op.

No probs mate.
Doc at the fracture clinic today said sling probably off in 3 weeks and a check up in 6 weeks. NO rugby until they decide it's safe (probably 7-8 weeks).
NOT a happy bunny

If there are only four veggies you might be better ordering a proper vegetarian meal from the regular menu than spending a fiver to pick at the buffet. What do you think?

it's fine by me. buffets are fine if there's a slection of veggi stuff but if it's cheese sandwitches or cheese ssandwitches in bread rolls it gets a bit dull

I will quite happily go with the non-veggie option....as long as I don't have to eat the offal sandwiches so no probs with a different buffet menu.

is is possible to have a sharpening session for bb members?
if it is possible, i will bring my 'NASA' equipment with me and will sharpen your dull knives for free:)
see you there

What's your 'NASA' equipment
Cones has brought his Edge pro in the past but it's never got set up because it takes a while to set up and is messy to use. My sharpmaker is normaly there.
I'm happy to bring my japanese watersone but again it needs soaking and might make a mess
If you have something that will quickly (relitively) reprofile my legacy I'd be happy. So far I just got bored and sharpened it at the origonal angle

yes, i will bring my edge pro but mine is MUCH cleaner than ordinary edgepro.
the set up just one minute and its far more simple coz its the apex version and i just need 3-5 mins for razor sharp edges (incl honing).
zdp legacy? its my pleasure Andy. i sharpen the false edge on my jess horn and im quite pleased with the result. but zdp is very hard and tooks a while to reprofile.
will show you the result of my jess horn later

Andy. What is the legacy's original angle (roughly)?
I think (this is using trig and the amoutn I raised the sides of teh sharpmaker by) that your looking at 22-24degrees per side. If you put a sharpmaker rod uder the edge of the base you get about 22-23 or something so that's what I did (didn't have anyhing to soak my waterstone in at the time)
William henry run ZDP-189 at 67RC and TBH I've found that although it takes ages before it needs sharpening it's such a PITA to sharpen I'd rather something softer. But I do love the knife
In short I wish all knife manufactures sharpened their knives at the right angle for the sharpmaker

I seem to remember one being brought to the last meet. I doubt the raw (or the ns) would fit in the handle of any of them (that's just a feeling, I don't know). If it did it'd have to be one of the biggest fixed blade models.

There's no parking at the pub itself Tiffers, but there is metered parking on the street behind. The best option will probably be the carpark of the Victoria centre shopping mall which is about two hundred yards down the road. I'll dig up a map.

Hi folks
The EMCCU will be holding the first meetup of 2007 in Nottingham at the 'Lincolnshire Poacher' on Mansfield Rd:

I hope you are all having a good time. :)
I am feeling a little under the weather this morning and did not feel up to the trip.
Apologies to all those who wanted to see various items I was bringing. Also to Andy as he wanted to pass along the Orb NS CE.
Hopefully someone will have taken a few pictures.
Look forward to meeting most you at Leeds. :)
Thanks
Mark
Cones you were sadly missed
