View Full Version : Next Meetup?

Hi folks

With Nottingham done and dusted we need to consider when and where the next meetup should be.

How does sometime in March sound? I'm sure we can get all the venues we have had so far, but maybe somewhere new would be nice. Any suggestions gratefully received.

You need to think in terms of the size of the venue and the accessibility. I'm sure a lot of us would love an isolated country pub where we can throw axes in the carpark, but there are a number of people who come by public transport. So ideally there should be access by train or bus. Although saying that Wirksworth is only accessible by helicopter and that has worked well twice.

;)

Other thing is the size of the venue. I think if there had been a bar upstairs in Nottingham this time we may have been a bit cramped. Having to go downstairs for beer did keep the room thinned out!

So if you have any suggestions then please post them here. Old favourites welcome as well. I didn't get to Coventry but everyone spoke very highly of Stephens 'Works Social' and it maybe does allow those from further west and south to attend. May preclude those from further north of course.

I think that would be a good idea Grace. The Nottingham/Chesterfield/Sheffield corridor seems to be conveniant for a lot of people.

I have a cunning plan for something to do in the morning as well. Need to PM someone now......

OK folks, this is the idea. We start a little earlier than usual, because we'll visit Stuart M's workshop in Sheffield to see what goes on in the workshops of a professional, commercial knifemaker and hear from Stuart about his work.

Sound good?

Maybe do that from 10.30 til Midday, then on to the pub as per usual for a regular session.

given how close Stuarts workshop is to the Sheffield United ground it should be fairly easy to find (and I'm guessing public transport)

now which pubs are near there? (and will they let us have a free room if a match is on)

This would, without a doubt, need organising for when there is no United home game....

United are drawing in crowds in the high 20,000's at the minute.... Pubs are pretty full

Fixtures here (http://www.sufc.premiumtv.co.uk/page/Fixtures/0,,10418,00.html)

I presume the SWFC website lists home games so I'll check that out.

They might do but SWFC's fixtures won't do us any good.... They play the other side of town

Home and away can be found on the link from earlier ;)

Oops, sorry! I did mean to post SUFC!

:C

Conveniantly it looks like that towards the end of february and at the beginning of March the only home game is 3rd March. I reckon the week before or after might be a good choice. Maybe the week after?

None of my business, but have you thought of getting somewhere at the University or the poly? Lots of little rooms, big rooms, function rooms and bar facilities available.

I have been racking my brains Hep and that was one of the thoughts.... I also though about one of the museums, maybe Kelham?

The pubs provide the room for free, making a few quid on extra beer sales and the buffet.

Uni's etc tend to charge unless you're affiliated in some way

Now that would be ideal!

:D

Problem with some Uni conference style facilities is that they can be a bit soulless and folks do like the pub atmosphere. Although it's also true that some older Unis have good facilities with lots of character, so it's worth checking out.

As to dates I note that it is Owen Bushs hammerin on the 17th/18th March and I think a few people would like to attend that, so would end of February be better for us?

Or as more events get organised up and down the country do we just bite the bullet and accept that some clashes will occur?

Danzo

Just go for it when it suits Stuart, and there's a room with a bar available.

As you tell others "pick a date and they will come"

Speaking for myself....

I have a stag "do" over the weekend of March 3/4... The wedding is the Saturday after so that is also out, for me :(

Any ideas of rough numbers????

Stuart, if a trip to your workshop is included, you may need to work out how many you can happily handle and go from there.

Keham Island isn't open on a weekend and charges a fair bit for function rooms. The reason why the last sheffield meet up was at the Fat Cat was that the pub is next door so that people would know where to go when it was open

spearmint rhino is very close to A.Wright

Spearmint Rhino???

I'm up for it...but I've two points...
This is daylight hours we're talking about (unless this is a longer event than usual) and surely there would be distractions...
having said that, I would have to bow to superior knowledge of such establishments!

Andy
07-02-07, 02:34 PM
someone at A.Wright tried to direct me by saying it was next to that club. It didn't help me at all

Depending on how many people are going to fit in Stuarts workshop it might not be too difficult to ,move further after that to a pub.

That sounds excellent. We haven't had a meet in Leicester so we could pencil your club in for the meet after Sheffield. I've been to a few working mens clubs in Leicester and they seem to do them well there.

So back to the sheffield meeting...how about 24th Feb? Stuart's in the morning and the usual pub thing in afternoon (venue to be arranged) via a dodgy sandwich shop for a sausage sandwich if the pub doesn't do food...

This may be too short notice Grace. We can take names though. Stuart has some ideas about making a weekend of it and having some knifemaking/hammerin type activities as well as the normal meet, so it may need to be towards the end of March.

That doesn't mean that we can't have a meeting in a pub on the 24th anyway though!
