I've just picked up an old sword made by Wilkinson sword but know nothing about it - the style, year of manufacture, use, whether regimental, issue or presentation?

I've still not worked out how to post pic's so I'll desribe it as best I can.

It's about 39" long, double edged (is missing it's handle) with a 17" 'blood groove' either side. It also has 2 parrellel 'blood grooves' of 2" long running from the hilt end.

Markings wise, it has the wilkinson sword crest and further down on the tang there is what looks like the MOD arrow mark with '71' & 'cl' under it or 'P & 12' over it depending on which way round you look at it. On the tang are the number 2 in two places on one side and the number 8 on the otehr side. It has 1" of thread on the end of the tang, presumable for fitting the pommel / handle.

The scabbard is Leather with wood lining, topped with a steel / silver collar marked wit ha number 29. Some other marks look like they've been scratched out.

I'd really appreciate any help or any good places to look to compare it.

Also, if anyone could let me know how to post pic's I'll add some.

You might have been better posting this in the Militaria and historical section!

I am sure if you ask nicely a Mod will oblige you! Sorry, can't otherwise help. Best of luck.:)

Sword identification is extremely difficult, beyond what you already know.

A picture would be a great help.

There is a fellow member here, lower, I would think a pm to him could help.... I would also think photos are essential though :)

You need to post photos really so that i can see the etching etc, but you describe sounds like a Basket Hilted Broadsword blade, or a scottish field officers blade. I can't remember the length of this blade, but from the description of the fullers this would be the only blade it could be, unless its from a presentation model of some sort, but the MOD markings would contradict this.

It would have looked like this
