I'd have to say, personally, for sometime in Sept. I just found out last night that I have to move 1000 km further north, and get used to a new house and community, so that will kinda be in the wayfor the next 3 -5 months.

i think I should change my handle to kithlover...

I am up for it. Is there a theme? Fixed, Folder, Novelty, Any etc as I have only made fixed fullers. Also is it going to be best effort, any skill level?

Voting seems to be for late Sept at the moment.
And my view is, like the other two, best effort anything goes. I would say we all promise to do the best we can. Taking the rule from the first KITH if you are expecting to get better than you give don't bother. All welcolme regardless of skill level and we all gratefully recieve whatever knowing its the thought that counts! 7 in already so we've got ourselves a game, and the more the merrier. If you know of folks in other places who might want to join us let them know.
And can someone with the power sticky this thread as we'll be needing it for a few months.
Cheers

Trenton

04-04-04, 08:23 AM
Let me know what you think on the theme idea, my thought was to keep it open to encourage the newer makers to join by letting them make whatever they feel comfortable with but I'm open to other ideas. Or how about similar to last time where we had a sort of theme (folders) but allowed anything from those who didn't / couldn't want to do a folder?

Yeah David, A preference for a particular type, but not a rule, just a guideline;)

Sounds good, how about, seeing as it's summer, a woodloreish knife?

twisty
04-04-04, 12:18 PM
my suggestian would be a full tang fixed blade. That is easy enough for us new makers to put together, and everyone enjoys a nice fixed blade. I think that there sould be something, though, that sets this apart, like a sheath is a requirement, and it should be fancy, unique, wood, leather, alien skin, that kinda thing. Mind you, this is just me thinkin' at 05:20 hrs after just getting home from work, so I could be way off base. I also agree with it just being a guideline.

I hope this makes sense, if not, please help me seek professional help.

Some form of field/Skinner knife? I was thinking of something with a Persian influence. Not the best shape for a field knife though. Colin are you planning on using your Felleskap blade?

B*gger. I was under the assumption it was any full tang fixed blade and am 70% finished a fancy dagger. I just have to finish surface preparation, etch the mosaic bolsters, mount the saphire faux-pins and make the rayskin inlaid sheath.

http://www.uberlevel.com/link2image/k939tv98u5.jpg

That's about as appropriate for outdoors as a micro-bikini at a business lunch.

Arrrgh. Another one for the bin?

PS/ Please someone answer my thread about etching!

Hey Zed if that blade was a woman I would sh4g it.
where did you get the blade from and the faux saphire pins.

I have an idea why not say thay the knife has to have somthing in it that has been recycled ie the sheaf could be made out of an old boot or a cross guard from an old bit of junk or as some one did in the last scales from a junk shop ornament.

Hi All,

I am doing some pen and ink work on a design, but what I want to know is there an average handle size? The reason is that I have large hand and I can see myself making a knife that for some people may find the handle to big. Also I fancy doing some 'fancy' file work. Two questions:

Before or after HT? (I was planing on doing before I grind the edge so it bleeds in)

If you do it in the grip area is it not likely to cause chafing/blistering? I have never held a 'fancy' filed knife so I don't know.

Hey Zed if that blade was a woman I would sh4g it.

Thank you, but I wouldn't recommend it; it could be ... uncomfortable. Wait till it's etched. Then it will either be gorgeously patterned or a scarred, bubbling mess.

where did you get the blade from and the faux saphire pins.

The blade is 6A stainless and sold by Sheffield Supply. I will be putting my own edge on it and have shortened and reshaped the tang. I don't think it was meant to have a bolster, as the pin hole positions didn't suit. Also, it's hard as rock. I have already destroyed numerous carbide bits trying to drill new holes. Hence the 'faux' pins (by which I mean they look like pins, but don't penetrate the tang).

The pins will probably be steel rod set into the pearl, carefully filed flush, centre drilled and with genuine cut sapphire gems set into the hole. I would have preferred sterling silver or platinum, but my mail-order seems to have been mislaid in the post. I'll speak to my wholesale gem supplier to ask if I can get local supplies. I have a mini-lathe so I can always machine from plate metal.

...

On second thoughts, maybe I can machine out of some of that silver clay stuff.

... or maybe some scrap silver jewellery from the market?

Don't worry about your hand size, you won't be winning your own knife! Just make it fit a hand 8" around the palm and 7" from the tip of the middle finger to base of the palm. ;)

I used to make large handles, but smaller suits fine filework.

File work does not chafe. I have a Laguiole with file work and it feels fine. Just don't make it deep and sharp or it will chafe.

I'd do it when the steel's softest, but the tang must have reached its final shape.

Sounds like it'll be really good.

Yes, it is rayskin, but just an insert. Rayskin has a nice texture but lacks structural rigidity and a tidy edge. You can get more information on the materials and construction on my Members Projects thread (http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?p=48599#post48599).

I don't know Dan. By the looks of this knife, I'm going to have to keep a lookout over my shoulder. If you start grinding your own blades then I'm done for...

Good job on using a stitch groove, that is one of those little things that take the sheath up to the next level.

What are the minimum requirements to participate?
For example do you have to create your own blade? If not what are the minimum quality standards?
I've only made 2 knives so I wonder if I can deliver up to the required standard.
Knowing you're creating for someone else could be motivating though.

Mimimum requirement to participate? wanting to and finishing a knife to put into the hat by the time I draw the names out of the hat in September.
We all promise to do the best we can, my last KITH knife was my second knife I'd made. If you don't feel up to starting from scratch a kit is fine, there are plenty on places like outdoorsuppliesuk that fit neatly into our suggested theme of somthing outdoors ish like a hunter or bushcraft knife. If you want to do somthing different just do it, our themes are just suggestions.
We all give and recieve in the spirit of it being the thought that counts and happily recieve whatever we draw knowing it is an example of the best work the maker can do be they beginner or expert.
Come and join the fun!

I didn't. I bought the blade from Sheffield Supply. You can see it on page 98 of their catalogue. You can pick up any number of these for a tenner or so; they are great blades and take a wicked edge. They are also easy to work with hand tools. You can make a simple knife or take it all the way like I did. Also, Brisa do kits that sell all the materials you'll need for a scandi. Very simple and effective if you get the hang of fixing the blade in the wood.

If you feel the knife you made is the best you could have delivered, then it's good enough for me and I would have no problem exchanging my dagger with whatever you can come up with.

Ideally, the knives requiring the most help and advice should go to the best makers. That way, new makers get valuable advice from a pro and good makers get critical feedback from their potential market.

The cool thing about this is that its a really good motivation to up your game and make something really special. whatever your level its always good to take on a challenge and if your making something for something else it can help you to go that extra mile. There are a lot of really nice blades in this KITH already from some very skilled makers, so it gives total amatuers like myself something to aim for. Its also good to know that your going to get a blade in return that someone has really put a lot of effort into, that matters more than all the flash technicality in the world.

Juha
Once this is finished late this summer I'll draw everyones name out of a hat in random order then person one on the list sends their knife to person two, 2 to 3, 3 to 4, etc down to the last person who sends their knife to the first.

The draw will be totally random, with the one exception of if someone has put two knives into the hat (only ZDP at the moment and possibly me if my from scratch and backup are done on time, anyone else want to?) and they draw their own knife I will put the second drawing of their name back in the hat.

All it takes is an email or PM to exchange addresses and you only have to pay to send yours to wherever. This is the same as the last two here. All works smoothly in the last two KITHS as far as I can tell.

If you want to join the fun just find the last version of the names list in this thread and reply adding your name to the bottom of the list.

If they both work out OK and you feel like it feel free to put both in the hat. The whole idea is we spread our work around the world so I see no problem anyone entering twice, and in a concession to randomness I will redraw if anyone pulls their own work out of the hat.

And Yes, September, some where towards the end as 3 or 4 of us will be showing some blades, probably including our KITHS at the Wirksworth Festival in early Sept.

OK, feeling decisive, I will do the draw on 24th Sept and include everyone who has confirmed they will have a knife ready to go by then and anyone who isn't quite done but can convince me they will be finished by the following Monday. Still plenty of time for anyone else to join the fun.

If anyone else feels like putting more than one in hat go for it. As I see it it is fully in accord with the KITH idea as you get to see more peoples work and more get to see yours.

Two dozen so far and still plenty of time to make it even bigger :)

Yep
2 in the hat = 2 out of the hat, 1 in the hat = one out of the hat
If you want to put two in your name will go into the hat twice so will come out twice as well that way the nice and easy Shing circle system of saying who gives to who still works. And to my mind it is totally in the KITH spirit, more people get to see your work and you get to seee the work of more others.
The theme this time (and as seems to be the norm here it's only a suggestion, so if you want to do somthing totally different go right ahead and do it) is somthing outdoors ish, so basically somthing like a hunter, skinner, camp knife ot the likes.

I just thought when I put the UK legal bit my early, not all of the people are UK based, are there any other issues we may face from the foreign contingent?

I think our laws are some of the strictist and it'd be just to complex to try to work out what the laws are in all participants countries. Is there anything our overseas participants can't own at all legally given assisted openers, butterflies, ring knives and the like are already ruled out? If so let me know and I'll check when I've done the draw with the maker if it falls into one of your banned types and if so redraw so you get somthing it is legal to own enen if you have to keep it at home.

Just wrought cut scale blocks in Thuya Burr off a 6x6x2 bowl blank from craftsupplies. I have never used this wood before and it feels quite moist. will I have to let it dry out or can you use it as is? Or does this wood naturally feel moist/oily?

MushiSushi
25-08-04, 08:04 AM
mine sweated a bit when I was working it, not as much as ziracote though, which actually beaded when I was working it on the belt. I don't think it's a problem, but keep an eye on it. It is quite oily at first

Thanks Mushi, I would never get this knife finished in time if I had to dry out the scales first.

As long as you can cut with I think you can call it a knife regardless the shape.

Just over 3 weeks to go and as far as I can tell the above is the entry list. Anyone I've missed, sorry and anyone else feel free to join. Just post here or PM me and I'll sort it.
I know loads of you have finished already but just to be sure could EVERYONE please confirm (either post or PM me) they will have their entry ready by 24th Sept? (or the following Monday at a push)
I'll do a final PM round anyone I havn't heard from a couple of days before the draw but come the hour of draw I'll have to remove anyone I havn't had a definate yes from.
So far ZDP, Bushwacker and me are putting two in, anyone else want to just say so.
And the really exciting bit is nearly here!

try to get the majority of the profiling done before putting them on the knife ... I have found it less awkward .. and less chance of accidently catching the blade on the belt and screwing the finish ..... and if the knife is sharp .. blunt it a little and wrap tape all over the blade, bit myself twice so far putting a handle on a sharp blade .. not gonna do that again

Ditto on the work thing as I start a 6 week booking on Monday ..... sheath is cut and had it's first shaping/moulding .. so far this leatherwork lark seems straight forward ... but the marking wheels were out of stock and to follow at Identity store .. so if I can't come up with a solution this weekend the stitching is going to have to wait until i've got some spare time

what about a stitching marking out wheel from any haberdasher's? Great if you only want to mark out the stitch spacing and they are as cheap as chips and available every where.

Really sorry guys, I'm going to have to pull out of this one :(

I've been working on a private commission (evenings and weekends), so much so I haven't made it to the shed once in the last couple of months, and I've got at least another month or two to go :sigh:

It's also the reason I haven't been posting too much lately, although I do pop by at least once a day to try and keep current(ish) on the news.

Sorry again, but I am really keen to see the results of this Kith. :)

Nope,
I'd stay in the game if I was you, we say do your best and even the best have little accidents sometime! I for one won't mind, it all adds to the individuality and proves its a one off hand made item.
