View Full Version : My "Tanto".
This was made yesterday and today. Edge was forget to get bit curve in it and to get the blade more "cutting" edge. Clay quenched, and so on...
Blade is 15cm long and overall 26.5cm
I shall start to polish it tonight while I still have time...
All critics, wake up! :D

And here it is after polishing. Went to 1200 and then buffed it. Tried white wine vinegrare for etching and it went to bust. Got some blue dots to the blade and no good "hamon" :( I have to try ferrochlorid tommorow...

What steel did you use Juha, nice looking blade.
Looking good.
How thick is the blade?
Looks good tell us more.

It was made from Böhler K460, bit same like O1. Blade is aprox. 3mm thick and I havent done the hole for the menugi, since I have not desided yet how to make it.
My clay was too rough in my opinion and I had bit difficulties to get it stick, so I used wire aroung the blade.
I have bought powerfile (50 euros) and I used it to make the bevels. The crossection is covex because powerfile cant make strait, flat bevel. Maybe I have to change the plastic support underneath. It gives up a bit and this is why (IMO) it does not make flat grind so well. Maybe I can use it for other tasks...
I still worry a bit for the etching since it did not behave well with ferrochlorid. I etched it for few minutes and funny, I got it look like damascus for awhile, then I got gready and it went too black. I have to cut more the solution and try it again I guess.
It was fun though to work in my shop with out any hurry. It has been such a long time...
I did quench and temper two other blades that i was not happy with, Damasteel, and those came OK. Now I know that I dont need no fancy furnice to HT my damasteel blades!!!
Tommorow, I have to contact a friend of mine who works for Cryogenics and get some liquid nitrogen from him. I shall cryo treat all of those blades before I mount them.
Juha
Nice looking blade Jon, any more progress?
juha hopefully i will get to HT it at the hammerinn

I don't know if this will help or not but, when I use ferric I cut it 2 to 1 with distilled water (2 parts water/ 1 part ferric) The slower you etch the steel the cleaner the etch will be. I dip my blades in ferric for 7 min. at a time. After the 7 min. I take it out, spary the blade with Windex w/ ammonia to neutralize the ferric and rub the blade down with some 0000 grit emery cloth. The I clean the blade with acetone and dip it for another 7 min. repeating the cycle until I get the etch I want. I use this method with hamons and damascus.
Thanks mate, I shall try etching when I find time again. My parents in law are visiting and there are some things to do with them so I have no time for knives now :-(
Take care,
Juha

I like the tanto shape.......Shame the hamon isnt showing so distinct as you want it to.
Will you re temper again after the cryo treatment?

I have read that it's recomended to re temper it but I have to test it before I do it. It was quite painless to make it and I dont mind if it brakes while testing. I wont breake it on pourpose... :p
Now the blade just looks old and it has a darkish patin on it. :o
The "hamon" does not show the way I want it to so I have to try, try and try again. :D
And when I do it I shall take my time and get it right! :banghead:
I like the shape of it myself and it feels wicked in your hand too! Like it wants to slice something right away.

I think the problem may be O1 is a deep hardening tool steel. It is designed to harden all the way through so the difference between the hard and soft areas would be a continium rather than a sharp division which is what you want when you are trying to make a hamon using differential hardening.
This is the reason I use EN42 steel rather than O1 when I want a knife with a hamon because it is not deep hardening. Other steels like 1080 would also work as they are simple carbon steels and do not deep harden.
shing today me and doc price water quenched the tanto the hamon is stunning
That sounds great Jon, you better show some pics soon. By the way let me know when you get the firebrick.
I got the blades Cryo treated today. First they were degreased with ultrasound, (dont ask), then they were submerged in liqued nitrogen for two hours. No visible cracks or any thing else...HUH!
And yes, I treated two other blades too. They were the "Tommi puukko" ones from Damasteel. They came OK too. Now I have to polish them too...

Oh how the time flies by.
I have made the wrapping for the tanto. I got really good instructions how to protect wrapping with epoxy from Jason, thanks again mate!
I shall let it dry for over night and if I find time, I shall take some photos this weekend.
I was wondering about the sheath, what kind of sheath would be propriate with this kind of "tanto"?
Juha
So here you have it, "the Horse fly", "Ushi-Abu 虻 " . This shall be my KITH, I hope you like it. :o

Juha,
You might want to try this this mode I did to get a flat grind.
