Hi folks

We have had a bunch of stuff doing the passaround circuit for a while but nothing new for ages.

So here we go, a chance to fondle two knives not designed for whittling. These knives were designed as bats for the sport of com. If you don't understand that then search our archives.

1. Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert folder.

2. Cold Steel Ti-Lite folder

Normal rules. They go as a pair throughout.

Sign up below and newbies are welcome to add their names.

EDITED TO SAY: I'LL LEAVE THE SIGN UP OPEN UNTIL TUESDAY

Well the bats went off to Raoul last week, and I've finally found a couple of minutes to write down a couple of thoughts

Firstly a big :biggthump to Danzo - your generosity is greatly appreciated

The Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert folder is a lovely knife with the classic Applegate-Fairbairn shaped blade. There's some sort of lock that stops the blade opening unintentionally. The liner lock is solid and there's no blade-play. There is also a little catch, engaged with the thumb, that stops the lock from disengaging. The plastic handle material feels a little flimsy, and the pocket clip drove me mad - I hated it, and felt that it really interfered with what was otherwise a nice secure grip. Talking of which, the handle was very neutral and allowed me to hold it in a variety of positions securely. I didn't like the thumbstud

I truly loved the elegant Cold Steel Ti-Lite. A nice execution of a timeless design. I really loved the handle on this one, with the slightly flared butt for a secure grip. The liner-lock is perhaps not quite as solid as the Gerber's, but is perfectly secure. Again I wasn't wild about the pocket clip, but it didn't interfere with the grip like the Gerber's. The thumbstud was again an irritation!

So I enjoyed the time I spent with these elegant knives, and seeing them in person has helped me to understand what I want in a knife (i.e. no pocket clip and no thumbstuds - I'm just so reactionary!)

Thanks again Danzo!!

Hi,
A very big Sorry to All that have been waiting on these bats.

My GirlFriend and son were in a realy bad car accident last month and i have been struggling to keep everthing going.

The accident happened only last month, and i am incredibly slack as i should have posted them back loads sooner than this.

Cheers Danzo for doing this pass around. Sorry for taking so long. It wont happen again as i wont be going for anymore passarounds as i have failed to get my act together and get them moved on quick enough.

Cheers
Raoul.

These items do not belong to me and so perhaps it is not my place to say this but I'm sure that everyone here would agree with me when I say

YOUR FAMILY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN HOW FAST YOU DO A PASSAROUND.

The knives were always safe, all we are talking about here is time.

I'm sorry to hear about the accident, I hope that everyone makes a full and speedy recovery.

:)
Mind you ...... on the next passaround just get your finger out and make sure you post them on after a week. :p

All the best to you and your family.

Absolutely 100% echo the sentiments. Nothing else matters when something that awful happens. I hope they are OK and getting better.

Raoul, please, please don't withdraw from participating in passarounds because real life got in the way of something as completely inconsequential as posting on some knives, OK? It really doesn't matter.

Thinking of you and yours.

Thanks for the PM's and posts. It makes me feel a bit less guilty but accidents aside i need to get the passarounds moving faster than I have in the past regardless.

My girlfriend wasn't too badly injured, but she is suffering from the effects of whiplash and Brusing she has some Diasipan and ropanol (i thinK) to help her get better.

She was stationary, waiting to rurn right just before a big bridge across the Norfolk Broards, and coulden't turn due to all the trafic in the opposite lane. She was waiting for about 3-4 minutes and as luck would have it I had told her off for turning her wheel before she could move only a few weeks or so before. Had she have had them in a different position other than straight ahead she would have ended up in the oncoming traffic or in the broards as she was hit at Aprox 60 from Behind. The Car is a Total Loss , no biggie, Its only Metal, And my Sons car seat was smashed to Bits, dont know if that is supposed to do that or not ( He was Upset And Bruised but Back to his Crazy ways after a Day or so.) So she ended being shunted to the Top of the Bridge.

The thought of them ending up in the Broads Messes my head up thinking about it.

She has a Rainbow Leak on her Car Keys ( You would always Know where it was what ever position you landed in as it would still be in the ignition) for cutting herself and others out of seatbelts etc. but I Dont think this is probably the best Tool for the Job. Possibly not the Best Case for EDC either (but i think it is reasonable). The Chives blade is Pointed and a Bit Fiddly to open after being launched from 0 to 60MPH in a second or so, I think that I Need to look at some new Toys for the Car, Seatbelts are one thing, But windows especially underwater are another.

I think I Will start a New Thread To see what Options you Guys think.

Now for the Review, Although only a Short One.

Firstly the Fairbun Sykes. I love the Double Lock on this. So simple but so Effective. Not to Keen on the Pocket Clip but i Am a Die hard Tip up Kinda Guy. Not much more I can Say on this other than It is a Very suitable folding Bat For Com.

I have Loved the Look of the Ti-lite for Quite some time. The Ti Handles are Lush, The Blades is Cool enough, Pocket clip Stiff, Its a shame that the the Guards aren't reversed but they still make a 99% Effective Wave Feature (I wondered if you'd ever thought of that) but i think in time Your jeans would Disintergrate.

Both wern't that sharp but that and the other niggles such as Stiff Pocket Clip could all be Remedied.

Two very nice Bats Indeed.

I dont have to many Manual folders without some kind of speed safe action on them or whatnot, so at first i found them a bit of a chore to operate, but once i'd got used to it, and found out the Ti-lite could be used as a waved knife, those Imaginary Pirates were Sh!tting themselves Big time.

Thanks Danzo and all you other guys for your patients and kind words/thoughts!!!!!! :biggthump

Cheers
Raoul.

The knives are now en route to Andy(laser) RMSD & should arrive today.

Thanks to Danzo for this. It was an interesting passround because I haven't handled either of these companies products before.

Bearing in mind that I don't know anything about either of them and my personal experience of "tactical" type stuff starts and ends with microtech & bud nealy, my first reactions out of the box were that these were interesting knives but obviously production items made to fit a price point.

To me the Cold Steel has the better ergonomics and the gerber the better build quality.
Generally I don't like thumb stud openers but the Cold Steel was a revelation, maybe the long thin blade helps but I found it very slick. The handle's also well shaped. While the machining is nothing to write home about it's a nice design, works well and it grew on me.

I thought at first that if I was buying one or the other, I'd pick the Gerber as it seemed better made. The plastic scales are very good quality and the general machining rather better. Over the couple (sorry) of weeks I've had this my views shifted though. While the ergonomics of the cold steel grew on me, it was the reverse with the Gerber. It does grip securely but it's very sculpted for thump and forefinger which slows the movement in the hand. The pocket clip got in my way. The thumb stud is partially concealed into the handle and there is a very positive detent keeping the blade closed - these made it awkward to open. Again, the liner lock and the novelty safety catch are made from rather thin pressed steel and don't inspire confidence. Overall, great to try but not one for me.

Danzo, thanks again for the opportunity to play with these. Feels like a bit of a brutal review of the gerber, but by contrast the cold steel TiLite was far more fun than I expected :biggthump

A few words on these knives. Like others, I think the pocket clip on the Gerber gets in the way, making holding the knife a bit uncomfortable. If it was my knife, I would probably remove it. Otherwise, its a fine knife. The Cold Steel is however a duperb knife. Very comfortable in the hand, easy to open and looks superb. If the small cross guard that is part of the blade was a little taller, it would make an excellent "flipper" for one handed opening.
Danzo, thanks for the oportunity to examine these. If you could PM me your address, I'll get them in the post to you beginning of next week.

After a short wait ;) these have arrived safely with the addition of the Mtech Kerambit thingy.

First impressions -

Ti-Lite : Looks very nice, feels very nice in the hand, surprising amount of play in the lock though.

Gerber Applegate-Fairburn Covert : Again, it looks good, but the handle does feel a bit plasticy. Opens fast and I like the idea of the secondary lock.

Mtech Kerambit thingy : Well, I can definately agree with Danzo, this is one uuuuuugggllyy little critter!!! but that gives it a wierd kind of cuteness ( :O never thought I'd use a word like that here, please accept my apologies :D ) and, considering where it came from and what Danzo paid for it, it feels stunningly well put together and solid.

More to come in a couple of days, Thanks for the chance to have a play with these Danzo :biggthump

Well, I was going to write about all of these together. Now these three blades arrived at about 10:30 ish and believe it or not, the one blade I haven't been able to put down is the Mtech!!! I will write more about it in a few days, but I have to say that I am amazed at just how good the quality is. Ok, 440C isn't exactly an ubersteel, but it does the job. It takes a good edge and it's easy to sharpen as well. The G10 slabs feel good and grippy and the whole thing feels incredibly well put together. When you open it, it's smooth and the lock clicks in with a very satisfying click. Recently, companies like Spyderco have been getting a bit of a pasting for out-sourcing to China and some people still believe that anything coming from China must be rubbish. After looking at this knife, I don't see how a modern company can not out-source. I've deliberately been over this knife almost microscopically and apart from a couple of rubs on the G10 the only two things I could pick up on are the finish on one side of the liner lock and the cheap Torx screws. BUT THIS KNIFE ONLY COSTS ABOUT A TENNER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been googling for M-Tech and they are stupidly cheap!! The holes for opening the blade are shaped to act as a spanner, not sure what size, not sure I'd like to use them for that too much, but, and I'm gonna stick my neck out here, and say that if the holes were round and the right size and someone had said to me here's a new Spyderco, I would have believed them. Don't get me wrong, (Sal especially if you're looking at this) that's not knocking Spyderco, it saying just how good the M-Tech is. I don't know how this would last over time, but I see no reason that with normal care, it wouldn't last years. I really can't get over the value for money. I'm so impressed I'm gonna get me on. :) M-Tech even make some nice looking knives, they're not all as ugly as this one :D

Of course I do! Shall I PM my address?

MotorbikeMan

Right, now I've had these for a few days here goes.

Ti-Lite - I do like this one a lot, it feels nice and looks good as well. Considering what it's designed for it feels a nicely balanced knife. With a bit of practice, the opening is impressively quick and smooth as well. The blade wasn't as sharp as some I've seen (Been opening too many wine bottles Danzo ;) ) but a quick wipe on the sharpmaker and a strop and it was quickly slicing right down an A4 sheet of paper. The only niggles I have are that there is a bit of play in the lock and why on earth did they use a bit of black plastic for the spine!!!???!!! :O seems almost like they forgot to order the materials and just stuck in something from the scrap bin. Apart from this, a nice knife.

Gerber Applegate-Fairburn Covert Umm...what can I say. In the end, I'm ultimately dissapointed with this one. This is just my own personal opinion of course (and I haven't read any of the other reviews yet) but to me, it feels cheap. The handle feels plasticy, the clip feels really uncomfortable and I'm starting to develop a dislike of that kind of bead blasted finish. The knife was very cold when it arrived and condensation formed as I unpacked it. Two days later, there were rust spots on the blade. This was the only one of the three to suffer from this.

Mtech Kerambit thingy - Well, this really was the surprise of the package. I can't really say anything more about this that I already have. Google around for M-Tech as they don't just make ugly little knives like this one. Of the three, I have actually found this to be a really useful knife. It's a fantastic box opener, whittler and a good solid rope cutter as well. I don't need to repeat what I said earlier about the quality except to say that for the money, it's superb, I'm gonna get me one, got my eye on a couple at the moment.

Again, thanks to Danzo for the chance to have a look at these, I'll get them in the post tomorrow

Received today with many thanks MBM.

First impressions:
Ti-Lite - very much the modern-day Italian stiletto. Handle feels pleasant but I'm not sure about the guard on the back - still haven't worked out where to put my thumb. Sturdily built, and the lock has almost tempted me back to linerlocks - the length of the bit that flexes is less than 2" and is reassuringly stiff.

Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert - immediately on drawing from the box I thought 'Ugh'. It's handle shape didn't make sense immediately, but after playing with it a bit my thumb and forefinger found their place. It feels equally comfortable with an edge-up grip because of its symmetry. The lock feels very flexible but the Interlock activation button is in EXACTLY the right place. Very smooth opening too.

Mtech Karambit - fell in love after 30 seconds after removal from the box. It's pretty, almost birdlike. Love the angle of blade to handle. Scales are pleasant to touch. Finger ring could do with edges being radiused as they are a touch sharp. Lock feels sturdy enough. I have one question - why did they not make this tip up!? I will be buying one of these. A tenner? I'd say quality was better than some £50 knives I've seen!

[EDIT] For a tenner a piece I might get two and try some mods...
