View Full Version : Autumn damascus-in at bush fire forge

I shall be having another forge-in in october the provisional dates being the weekend of the 20th and 21st .I am still a little unsure of the format that this will take and I would like to if possable get a guest along who could teach me a thing or two .
there will as usual be lots of forges available and I have been given some good thin band saw steel by banjo bill that will mix amazingly with 15n20 so there will be some easy to make damascus steel at hand .
my curent thoughts are that I am not happy with people who are unsure of power hammers using them especialy If I have my big hammer going.but we shall see .
I shall be charging a fee to cover expences fuel steel etc It is likly to be more than last time due to the more expensive and fuel intensive process of making paternwelded steel .
more to come as the thoughts make them self more clear in my head .
I am sure it will be a laugh and an informative weekend of metal bashing .

Edit I have set the fee at £40 this will include food saterday eve .

Owen, if you can use bandsaw blades, do you want me to save the ones from the big saws at work ?

I only throw them in the scrap bin when they break....we dont bother welding them, just fit a new one.

No problem if you dont want them though mate:)

If you could save em I'm sure someone would use em .If they etch shiney they are probably 15n20 and in that case they would be great for hammerin steel .

I will check the packing as well....it may have info on the steel.

I'd like to see how various patterns are made & different peoples way of forging the billet eg owen welds under the powerhammer & you use a hand hammer.

Cool ,
I'd better start twisting !!I'd like to see a bit of mozaic ,but as jjh said we work so diferently that even similar demos would be quite diferent .
we shall have to have a chat about it!!

Just out of interest what made you think that i was using the american term "Fall" wich is the continued use of the old english word "Fall"?
it is one of the few americanisms that I really love as it is so evocative and reminds me of walks in the autmn woods ,also its english!!

I think this is the way to go , demonstrations by people who really know what they are doing would be great. If we all try to get a billet going there won't be enough time or space for anyone to achieve much.

You can learn a huge amount watching an expert, and seeing different techniques of achieving the same goal isn't often possible.

By the way Mick, I'd like to see how you manipulate and combine the bars to make some of your spectacular patterns :)

And Owen, how about showing us some of the tricks used to make your swords :D

meles meles
15-06-07, 08:25 PM
Mebbe if us brings along a kupple of bags of diffrent kullered fotons Owen kan mek us a 'maskus light sabre...

owen bush
15-06-07, 10:21 PM
I'll certainly do a demonstration probably a large seax ,with twisted back ,multy layer edge .I could pull this off in a day on my own and probably as a demo with a little "here's what I made earlier" .
I wand to develop a set piece that I can take as a demo and I recon thats the thing to do .
would a 24" seax do Duncan ?
A full sword blade as I do it would be a week + .

Underhay

It's good to have an event like this to look forward to after the summer's gone, and I had no idea the origin of the expression fall was English :)

Mick Maxen
15-06-07, 10:32 PM
Duncan, funny you should mention manipulating and combining bars, as I was thinking along those lines. Making up some bars for a centre core, with twisted and untwisted areas, which I shall make at my place, explain how the bars were made and then do a demo welding them up, and if there is time welding on an edge.
Owen mentioned mosaics, which is not a problem, but will involve using a power hammer and will take quite a time. The way I do them is with bars with the pattern on the end, so it will be a case of forging square, cutting in half, polish and etch the ends to see the pattern, decide how to join them, weld them up and start all over again. Very labour intensive.
Whatever happens and who does what, we shall see but it will be an interesting weekend.

Mick.

oky doky its time to start the list and build up a little momentum on this one .
two days Damascus with me and mick doing a demo each day I'll provide food on sat eve we'll get a take away curry friday ..gathering on friday eve or sat morn (as per usual) cost not formulated yet but more than last time to cover gas materials etc (probably gonna be in thew region of £30 to 50 quid per head ,I believe it was £25 for the last one and I just broke even on that wich is how I would like to price this one .I dont want to make money on a hammer in but lots of people making damascus will cost .
I am going to have my workshop as a demo space for me and mick and there will be another power hammer in the school for everybody to use under strict supervision .
plenty of forges and grinders I've even got a chemical box for my ferric chloride!! .
so whos in ?

Nice one chaps ,well with my muckers along to that will put us into the 20s or 30 in number .cool.
the place will be a lot better set up than last time so more forges more grinders etc .
i want to have another cutting comp and I'll try and figure out some diferent things to slice on sunday afternoon!!
I'm not interested in limiting blade length or width or materials (mythril alowed!!! also unobtanium!!!) I am interested in seeing what people can come up with or bring along as the ultimate chopper !

Owen, I'd like to put my name down on the list but am not sure on what skill level is required.

I forged a knife last time and that was my first time (really enjoyed it), I'd like to come and have a go at this one but from a previous thread sounded like it was for experienced folks only as it would be more difficult.

Please can you confirm what kinda experience is needed, if any?

as per always all are welcome and making basic multy layer damascus is quite easy (probably easier than forging a blade if someone shows youn how )
me and mick are doing some complicated stuff for all to watch there are a few of us around who will be able to help with basic damascus so there will be a chance for you to have a go .

So people know, there will be an auction for a custom knife (probably on the Saturday) and also a raffle on one day as well.

ALL funds raised will go to funding the Hammerins and meet-ups we all enjoy.

Any donations are greatfully received and will surely go to a good home ;)

Owen do we assume you plan to get us all a shot at doing a damascus blade or just demo the damascus and let us all bang away at some plain steel or is it a pure demo/social king of thing. Im just wondering how 40 of us will manage to get time on 6 or so hearths/anvils. Not that I mind which way it runs; just so I know what to anticipate if you know what I mean. I wont miss it anyway.

Cheers

I'll answer Honestly, I dont exactly know .
i would suggest teaming up and I can organise that if necesary .
the working in a fire is just a small part of the whole process with cutting and atacking and working the billet being as much work .
I will have one power hammer station (wich will have to be supervised ) and one 8 tone flypress station so there will be a chance for everyone to partisipate .
I will be around milling and showing on saterday .
I view these events as a way to share knowledge and gather people together .after atending you should be able to gain the basic knowledge on how to forgeweld a damascus billet .
I have put aside enough steel for each person to go away with a 1lb billet wether of not that happens is up to you .
We managed to get 30 knives done last time with less fires going .

Just in case there was any confusion,
I am not using this hammer in a a fund raiser for the one next march ,I have however set the fee so that in all liklyhood the event will make money rather than loose it ,If it does i will use the money to go towards the next one (hope that is as claer as mud!).
anyhow I am sure that it will be a great learning experiance ,and I, am looking forward to it all (after i get the place sorted , so much to do ,so much to do,so much to do!!)

Evenin everone, occasional lurker, and the owner of Johns hammer emporium (aka massey) perveyor of fine metal whoopin machinery.

Had a chat with Toby today (the most patient hammer customer ive got, having taken the crown from mr Lucas :) - he mentioned the damascusin your having..... now, its quite a tentative link, but ive got a lil 15kg demonstrator hammer with Nigel Barnett in norfolk, who I understand knows Mick Maxen, who i understand knows most of you guys.....

You are more than welcome to have a loaner on the machine (its fully set on a base, single phase, plug and play) for a few days but its just down to logistics if you would like it.

Massey is a very small company now, and like most small businesses in manufacturing we are not exactly driving round in bentleys (Col can confirm the state of the factory!), so whilst i would love to drop it down there and meet a few more of you im booked up untill next christmas fixin old machines.

If a few of you are interested in this (and its ok with you Owen, you must be up to you neck in organising anyway) im sure it could be arranged one way or another!

thoughts and comments appreciated... (sales@masseyforging.com , nonjicholson@hotmail.com or 0161 3517364 office hrs - ill check back in here aswell! )

The last time i saw Nigel he had 2 300-masseys and 2 goliaths add an anyang or two and i guess he has all the pies!!!(not that i am jelous or anything)

If the anyang is insured against damage and theft then it'd be good to have a play with it .thanks for the offer .

I'll phone nigel again and if I cant get through then if bob can colect it then the more mashing the better .

hes put in a 5 cwt massey since then...... he has been in east europe on a blacksmith jolly for a few days (nige, you can get them mail order now), im not overly worried about damage / theft, just ensure that safety specs are worn etc ( i doubt i would be covered for 3rd pty injury on my policy for this one, as ever common sense applies)

think some of you would be pleasntly suprised by how much work the little steak mallet / sewing machine can do in one heat... its nice to watch the billet heat up as you work it!

with the base there is probably approx 350 / 400 kgs tops in it.

(when i was down at niges forge he had a nice lil pattern welded 'dagger' in his show room, bout 5" blade... he welded it up, fluxless for a bet from one of his students / helpers, from crap (wire etc) that was lying round his forge!) - dont uderestimate a good blacksmith! - he is modest but better than most of us will ever be :)

Boys or girls Owen ? Research would suggest that they require slightly differing angles for maximum effectiveness of cut

Edit : Update after a test run : 'Halvses' is easy enough, but I can't get it so the bottom half remains standing after the cut. They don't half make the blade "gacky" too. ;)

Keeping you guys safe can some times be real hard. First we are going to sea on such and such a date then a little fire happens and now we are going to sea on this such and such date. now work have said it may be such and such date which is after the hammerin. Beer and pole dancers. And propane.

Beer I can do, most I'm likely to manage on the pole dancers is a scaffold pole. Propane? In the dinky 13kg things I use???

Mik,

Sleeping is on mass in a few of the out buildings.

PLEASE make sure you have a warm sleeping bag (im bringing two just for me) and preferably something to slepp on as well, like a rollmatt. If you dont have one, dont panic, let us know and we can probably sort something out for you as theres plenty of time ;)

Rgds

EDIT: From Owens posts;

I am in welling kent post code DA16 3DA
I have a couple of out buildings to use as a place to put up a bed in the dry and (one is heated one not)there are going to be a lot of people bunking down together .
there are local b and b's I have no personal experiance of em I'd do a search in the welling /bexley/grenwich area.

If your planning to sleep in one of the out buildings, remember a rollmatt or some sort of camp bed and a decent sleeping bag (its October remember and the weather might remember that as well )

Do you zip them together to make a double?

Stew
18-10-07, 09:19 PM
Genius :D

:rolleye11

If I was coming, the space would be taken but as I'm not, go for it.

As you go into the 'yard' it's the roofed area straight ahead, far right corner. There are some nicely located bracing points on the scaffold. Might be wise to give it a slight shake to check they haven't loosened off though.

Most stable nights sleep I've ever had in my hammock and the only time I've 'gone urban' with it.
I would anticipate a cold night but if you are a hot sleeper and kip in just your pants, I would advise getting up before everyone else starts moving around. :rolleye11
