I just got this blade back from the engraver. He works like lightning and returned my blade in under 24 hours from taking on the job. The work is sketched by hand directly onto the blade, much like a tatoo. The blade itself is a Solingen blade from Sheffield Supply.

The engraver is an old Chinese master by the name of Lai Fei Lung and he works at night on a street corner by an old Temple, sat on a folding stool. His light and graver is powered by a battery. He's something of a local celeb and has been featured in magazines and newspapers. I admit the design is a bit Triad-like (Chinese organised crime), but I expect a few of his customers are, based on where he works from.

This blade is a possible candidate for the Summer KITH MkII. Other options include my integral knife and a more conventional fullered skinner.

Not to be rude, but what's reasonably priced?

That's some nice lookin' engraving, and it almost makes me want to send one across the pond to have it done.

Did he pick the patterns, or did you decide what you wanted?

Have fun,

Trenton

Trenton, I didn't want to say because once everyone knows how cheap it is, nobody'll want my Summer KITH. Suffice it to say "Reasonable" means less that you'd expect..... Awwww OK £5.60 per side or £10.50 for both (note that doesn't include the blade). Prices may vary I'll just pass on a quote for whatever you want to the engraver. Your business is basically between him and yourself. I'll just help out and save you the hassle of travelling to the far east and learning a foreign language. (If you can speak Chinese, I'll give you his mobile phone number)

The designs were pulled from a book of Chinese artwork. We decided the symbolism together. Both designs were heavily modified from the stock design. Basically, it's like being in a Tattoo parlour, except you don't have to be drunk.

Here's the text of an email I sent to Trenton, reproduced here in case it helps bushwacker, et al. Trenton was asking if he could work hardened blades and what the quality was like:

My blade was purchased from Sheffield Supply. They list it as a carbon
steel blade "Ready to assemble" i.e. it has been HT'd tempered and
ground. The engraving is as described in my original post as sketched on
with a graver. Therefore, the pattern has a rough or raised texture that
can be polished down or left as is. I can't guarantee the result, but
all I can say is I like my blade and think the engraving was good value
for money. There were no accidental scratches.

If your blade is especially valuable, I can purchase a ZIPPO lighter or
similar that he has worked on and mail it to you. You'll pay for the
lighter and its engraving, plus any postal charges at cost. If that's
what you want, let me know and I'll get you a quote on that solution.

For the image, I can photograph any image he plans to use. He generally
works from books of classical pictures, but can manipulate them quite a
bit. He can fill just about any shape and size you want. I don't think
there are many hard and fast rules - I think that was the first blade he
has done. Normally he does lighters, hip flasks, boxes and mobile phone
cases!

"Basically, it's like being in a Tattoo parlour, except you don't have to be drunk."

Tattooists in Belgium generally don't do drunk people. They bleed to much...and vomit.
I suppose that's the same everywhere for decent tattooists?

Does he use a tattoo machine to etch the blades?

Nah, it's a proper graver and there's no etching involved.
