View Full Version : Is this worth doing-up?

I've had this Feinwerkbau sport mk3 since I was fourteen (do the math, God that makes me feel old:rolleyes: ) and have some really good memories of plinking on my nana's back garden or going hunting in the local woods with my mates, probably not strictly legal but no-one seemed to mind. The thing is for last fifteen years or so it's just sat unused, gathering dust in whatever out of the way place it's been stored.

I had forgotten how much fun just plinking away at a target was until I had a go with Marks rifles at the recent EMCCUNITW and the recent glut of rifles for sale on BB have really made me want to have a go again.

The question is is it worth having someone do this one up?

Here are some pics that show the condition.

3248

It has a few marks on it as you would expect given it's age.
One of the worst things to happen to it was at the hands of the local gunsmiths! I took it in to have a silencer fitted and they removed the muzzle weight and fitted a crappy plastic front end to attach the silencer to, this lasted about two minutes before it came loose
3249

The results of Halls modification,
the now bare front end.
3250

The rest of the faults can all be laid at my door rust
3251

and the odd knock and scratch on the stock.

Any advice is appreciated as I know as much now about air rifles as I did 22 years ago:rolleyes: :D

At the time this came out it was one of the top air rifles around. So yes get it cleaned up.

Thats what I thought but I dont want to pour more into this than it is actually worth, I would rather put the money to a new gun.

I suppose that begs the question what is it worth?

Any idea anyone?

Dunno what it'll be worth but sorted out it will certainly be a very nice rifle and plenty good enough for plinking!

I suppose a trip to the gun rooms is probably in order to price things up.

I'd start by just doing work to it that's required to make it function for its required task - plinking for example. You'll then be able to get use out of it.

After that and if you fancy doing more do the aesthetic improvements.

I've gone and bought a second hand PCP but I'm planning on getting my old Webley Vulcan functional again to bring back some memories :)

Cheers, Phil

Well it turns out there are a number of good HFT clubs in our neck of the woods so I bought something to use for HFT, I sold quite a few knives and went for something that to me is a dream gun :)

These are the previous owner's pictures, it no longer has the bipod on it.

Hopefully I have a scope arriving soon for it too :D

and here it is next to my Vulcan (http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/dando.phil/AssortedTemp/photo?authkey=RdO4yhlPaRc#5111113904293799026)that I will hopefully be fixing up

Certainly did. Used to love shooting as a kid, looked at getting back in to it years ago but a quick check and I couldn't find any clubs in my area, I think they were always there I just didn't look hard enough

Really looking forward to shooting again and learning lots from some experienced HFT shooters.

Yep Cones has a lot to answer for in the Brights and Guns department :D

If i could track down the gun i learnt to shoot with (BSA Airsporter) i'd buy it and restore it regardless of cost, some things you just can't put a price on.

I just bought a HW77K, back when i started shooting the 77 was a dream gun for me and it took this long to finally get one.
I don't think i will put a scope on it, im enjoying "plinking" with the open sights, i think this will just be my back garden fun gun.

Which mark of Airsporter would that have been? I have had most of the early ones and they were my pride and joy, sadly all overtaken by these new fangled ones I keep seeing posted.:O

I honestly don't know, it was a long time ago.
I do know that the more modern ones i see coming into the shop have larger loading tap levers than the one i had.
It was well used and battered even back then so i think it was a pretty early example.
Im sure it's long gone by now.

Probably a Mark 1 or 2, then - IIRC the larger loading tap came in with the Mark 3.
Still have my Mark 4, bought for me by my Dad when I was 10... Needs a bit of fettling, like a new mainspring and cylinder polish, but still shoots OK - takes the odd woodpigeon now and again to give the cats a change of diet :)

You can get parts for them here (http://www.gunspares.co.uk/shopdisplaycategories.asp?id=24287&cat=Airsporter) and tuning parts form the same shop here (http://www.gunspares.co.uk/shopdisplaycategories.asp?id=23991&cat=Tuning)

(I would have to admit at this point htat I still have every air rifle and pistol I ever had, with the exception of an Original 66 and a cheapo El Gamo pistol...)

Hoarder? Me?

No.

It is an appalling pile of poo and should be sent to me for...errrr...destruction, immediately! ;)

Seriously: Given some TLC that rifle will serve you, your kids and your kids' kids for generations to come.

Remember: Air rifles don't wear out, they wear in!

Get it to a specialised air rifle 'smith (not some back yard butcher). Have it reblued and "breathed on", and you'll have not only an eminently practical tool, but an irreplaceable memento of your childhood.

Yes, fix it up and have some fun shooting with it. :)

These people will help with any spares.

We now seem to have quite a few people interested in Air Rifles. Do you think we could have a team BB event? :)

Have Fun

After my previous experience with the silencer that sounds like a good idea, any names spring to mind?

There are a few people on the AirgunBBS who could make you some custom machined parts for your silencer adaptor.

Well my club is still open at the current location for the moment. I could ask if we could have a meet up there? :)

It is only a little further than Hill Holts woods that many have been to.

It would probably have to be a Sunday afternoon. Normal club fees would probably apply of about £5 each for the whole afternoon.

Should I start an interest thread?

Thanks

Thanks for the contacts Mark, I spoke to Jason tonight and I should have the adaptor within the next few days.

Just a silencer and scope to source and I'm away. :)

Don't know how much you want to spend but the Leupold clone scopes that come from Hong Kong via ebay are rather good value!

Try Cone's other link to U.K.Neil, I've had a couple of silencer's from him and he know's his stuff. Only thing I'll mention is he uses Ali to machine them so they come bare, you might not like that aspect....otherwise, much better than a shop bought item unless you buy a weihrauch silencer, they seem to be the quietest of the production ones. The FB sports are a great gun, I'd love a .177 with open sights, and a V-Mac kit, plinkin superstardom;)

I forgot to mention that I own a U.K. Neil moderator. It is a quality bit of kit with all metal construction that will probably outlast me. :D It is a little heavier than some though. Although that could be a good thing in some cases. It's very shiny as well. :D

Phil, I have an old Vulcan aswell! We'll have to sort them and meet up to compare them! There was an old scope on mine, cross hairs smashed to bits inside, so I did a quick fix to be able to take it out and see how well it performed. I soldered a sewing needle inside the tube where the crosshairs should be so I now have a single post like on a SUSAT! Not brilliant, but it will do until I get a scope for it sorted out. I took it to the gun shop and they reckon it is doing a shade over 10, so not bad for a rifle that has been sat up in an attic for I don't know how long!

I would love to strip the blueing off and get the whole thing done again, as there is some crap engraving on parts aswell that spoil the whole look, and the stock needs rubbing right down and then protecting with something other than varnish with grit and paint brush hairs in! I reckon I could get it sorted out, it'll take a bit of work, but if I do one thing at a time, it should turn out OK. It diesels a bit at the moment!

Forget the leupold clones on a springer..I've known more than one shaken to bit's on a springer.

Go for a scope designed for spring guns.

If you want any more info Shaun, just get in touch. also if you want to try your gun out at the best HFT club in the area, let me know and you can come up to my club as a guest. I've also got a couple of pcp guns you can have a go with.

Andy.

Wish I'd seen this post earlier, as I make brass silencer adapters to order.
