View Full Version : Stabilizing Service
I'm so pleased with the results and the difference it makes when working the wood now that I've changed over to using resin under vacuum conditions for stabilizing wood, I'm thinking of offering a stabilizing service if there's enough people willing to use it.
All comments welcome
:D Now that sounds like a good idea to me.

You know i want some ;)
Yes, that would be really good. You'll have to let us know prices, prepartion of the wood and the types of wood that are suitable. I can deliver mine as I have rather a lot to stabilised.
Ya know I am interested.
I got about 8 big blocks of ancient Kauri wood and some.
Just give us some details.

I've tried it, but it was too messy and troublesome, and I was never 100% confident with the results.
I would definitely consider it.

I am very interested. I have some lacewood I need doing as well as a load of other stuff.
Is it just wood, or would it work on bone/antler?

sounds like a plan ..... I need some stability in my life ....
I might even apply for the position of apprentice to take some of the work load off you ..
in all seriousness though, it sounds like a great idea ...... I don't think you would be short of orders

Sounds like a plan!, As Hepotec said what about Antler?
Here’s some info I’ve put together so far, let me know if I’ve missed anything or if you have anything constructive to add.
Prices.
Standard sized scales 150x50x10 £5.50 each set
Standard sized Blocks 120x30x40 £6.50 each
Blocks or scales smaller will be the same price as standard size; any pieces larger will be priced individually.
Wood
Any wood sent in should be in good condition and without defects or repairs done using any kind of adhesive.
Wood should also be clean with no dirt, oil, grease, paint or other Chemicals including previous wood treatments.
The wood must be dry and have a moisture reading of no higher than 10%. I’ll check the moisture reading of all wood, if the wood is too high in moisture I’ll return it untreated with a £5.00 service charge, the charge will only apply if the wood is obviously soaking wet or still green, it won’t apply for readings that are slightly over. I'll contact you for a decision
If the wood you intend to send in is stored somewhere damp move it to somewhere dryer for at least two weeks before sending.
Prepping wood
The smoother the finish is on the wood the easier it is to clean after treatment, I sand all my own wood to 180 grit minimum prior to stabilizing which saves time later, I’m pushed for time at present prepping wood so I know it won’t be possible to prep all customers wood.
I will obviously add an extra charge if I have to prep customers wood so it would be better all round and keep the price down if the wood is prepped before sending in.
Bone, Tusks etc
I’m planning to stabilize bone, tusks and antlers but I’ll give more details on this in a week or two.
I’ll add or amend later.
I'd be interested in this. Do you have a press ?
I've got some nice wood with some cracks and splits in that I'd like to try this with.
If a crack is minor then I can squeeze ultra thin CA glue into it,followed by some thicker CA and then leave in a vice overnight but I think that resin impregnation would be better for larger flaws.

hi Dean,
How did your trials with bone, tusk etc. go?
Cheers,
Geoff
Very interesting indeed...

Hi Geoff, tried some antler which came out very well without any problems, I think bone will take to stabilizing just as well. I'm not going to mess with fossilized pieces just yet.

Here's a piece of Rotton Elm Burr I picked out of the scrap bin and stabilized it, then decided to make something for it sit on:)
http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s100/dattwood/elmstick.jpg?t=1203811662
A couple more additions, the long pieces at the back are some part of a swordfish, the pieces in front are mammoth tooth

Resin penetration, I added a red colouring to the resin to show the penetration on this Elm block, it was cut while the resin was still wet, the top piece is half the side pieces are quarters

Dean......how thick are the swordfish pieces please. Also, do the mammoth tooth pieces feel solid....as it can tend to be brittle.
Very interested in both mate
Any prices?

He better not sell them to you - they are mine :D
I've send a bunch of different stuff to Dean so he could try them before claiming to able to do it. So far everything has been great.
Both the swordfish bill and the tooth ( parts of a large chunk ) are ebay finds.
The swordfish is actually from one piece. The sets are "bookmatched" but the difference in color from one side to the other is extremely big as you can see.
The tooth was rather solid before stabilizing. I simply broke/cut it it useable pieces, removing the brittle parts, instead of having to worry about it breaking up while been worked. I've kept some for superglue experiments too :-)
After Deans treatment I'm sure it's perfect for bolsters and spacers. Hard on the cuttingtools though.
