In the Micarta post I suggested getting a joint shipment from SKS to share the shipping costs, anyone interested please let me know by 4/7/03 and what they want, please include product codes and costs prefably in Excel 2000 format.

I will ask for the cheapest shipping method which could take a few weeks. I will split shipping costs by weight plus pro rata on the packaging weight.

Might as well take advantage of the weak $

Roll on non-brown laminate phenolic plastic!

Hmmm in FL??

Try having a word with Kevin ..... he might be able to post it out cheaper and in a private package so that customs are less likely to get their grubbies on it.

So Shing,

How much and what colours are you looking for?
having a go at Homemade might be cheaper than getting it sent over.
You will need;
a slow setting, unfilled Epoxy (coloured or translucent depending on desired effect)
Acetone
the material of choice (not synthetic!)
some polyester film (like cling film but won't react with resin)
2 pieces of 18mm MDF cut to the approx size you want the sheet of homemade Micarta (12" x 12"?)
4 'G' Cramps
spray release wax (AFH Aerosol)
rubber gloves (ideally chemical resistant)
Cheap natural bristle brushes
an oven to post cure (preferably one that won't come with divorce papers!)

you'll find everything Here (http://www.cfsnet.co.uk/) with the exception of the material, although
Jacobson's (http://www.jacobsonchemicalsltd.co.uk/index.html) do some really nice Epoxies too, the RBE & DHI one comes to mind as being superb for this technique.

Lay out 1 piece of MDF and cover with some film and spray with release wax. cut the material into squares of the desired size and wet with acetone and leave to stand for a while . mix resin according to instructions. wring out the material of excess acetone if need be and then thoroughly wet with the resin and begin to build up the layers. once you have required layers (remembering that compression will reduce the thickness by at least half!)...... wrap the other piece of MDF in film and spray with release and clamp the 2 piece together taking care to tighten the cramps evenly and leave to set. (It should look like a nice tasty sammich ;) MDF, film, resin & material, film, MDF )..... finally .... some epoxies require a post hardening in an oven ... at the end of this, you should have a nice slab of homemade equivalent to micarta and a wonderful sense of pride and achievement!

looks like a very smelly process mushy :D

Not really. Compared to polyester, epoxy has a very mild smell. Acetone, you could be in the same room with an open pot and hardly notice it. Now polyester, that stuff stinks and that styrene smell lingers:rolleyes:
I just thought that if shing has a place he can machine his micarta, he has a place he can have a go at making an equivelant. Who know? he might enjoy it ;)

Interesting Mushi, reminds me of chemistry classes. I could do different coloured layers of paper or card come to think of it or laminate in some metal like brass or Al.

I think I'll still go for the commercial stuff though in plain colours a lot less hard work.

1/2 hour ... top!.. then leave it over night, pull a cold one and put your feet up ;)
and next day, pop it in the oven for a couple of hours on 75C

Hard work?? ........
